I was greatly looking forward to this programme, but came away incredibly disappointed. Why? For one thing, we did not get any sketches, just brief clips of sketches interspersed with so-called expert analysis from other comedians. What a con. At least Barry Humphries appeared in some of the sketches featured, but the other comics had no discernible connection to the subject matter. It was rather like tuning into a documentary about the Cuban Missile Crisis, and finding it narrated by Joe Pasquale. Presumably the programme makers felt that Pete and Dud's comedy was not strong enough by itself to attract an audience, and thought it a good idea to bring in other comedians to tell us why they thought it was funny. The 'gay' sketch came under fire from one comic, who accused Pete and Dud of 'taking the mick'. Excuse me, dear. That is what comedy is supposed to do. Besides, gay comics have been known to make fun of straight people from time to time, so get off your hobby horse please
Given that several complete editions of Pete and Dud material were found a few years back in Australia, there can be no excuse for not transmitting them complete. Let us hope that it happens someday.
