Another Spanish Must Watch
ssheikh_119 April 2018
I have to thank Netflix for bringing such enjoyable content from this beautiful country. After my first foray into Spanish Series/Movies with Grand Hotel I have watched a lot of Spanish movies and shows and I must say they excel in bringing periods alive in their shows. Grand Hotel did it beautifully and this drama is a close second. The foremost thing these period drama's have managed is to bring a lot of emotions together with culture and a solid story.

As it is a fictional drama of course it is not complete factual retelling of actual history, but it's also not fluff. They cater to an intelligent, I would say mostly female audience, but an audience who like a dose of romance, suspense and also intelligent story telling and compelling dialogues. This exact mix has in my opinion been missing from most US content therefore filling the gap nicely. Highly recommend this drama.

It keeps you watching
gerryroberts22 March 2018
Pro's: The characters are appealing. The story line is interesting. For the most part, the acting is pretty good. This isn't a deep, serious watch- even considering the subject matter. This was a historical situation I wasn't aware of, so I always appreciate cinema that spurs me on to learn more about what was going on. Con's: I would say the "getting together-breaking apart" aspect of the love story between Julia and Fidel got to comic proportions by the end.In fact, that seemed to be a common theme with ALL the romantic plot lines in the series and it was getting tiresome. That said, I hope there is a season 2. :)

Awful English audio spoils a good series
juliemcfarlane-865534 March 2018
This was my first experience of a Spanish Netflix series and I really enjoyed it. The theme is very telenovela, with lots of drama and crisis points, but very entertaining and well paced. The acting is excellent and the characters are believably portrayed. The attention to the period, and the detail in the 1920s hospital setting is amazing. In some episodes I found myself concentrating more on the fixtures of the scene than the acting itself! There are a few authenticity gripes, as other reviewers have noted, particularly with regard to medical procedures but nothing that detracts too heavily. The worst problem is the contrived and badly constructed English audio. I watched with sub titles and English audio, and the audio NEVER matched the wording of the sub titles. Even worse, the audio voices were corny and poorly 'acted'. Very often the audio fell into a modern day American slang, which totally jarred with the elements of the scene. Netflix's shoddy work on the audio is very disappointing as it prevents the series from getting a great rating.

A Show About Embracing Other Cultures
TeamRocket_Jessie25 January 2018
When writing this, the IMDB reviews thus far have just been soap boxes for hatred of the Spanish or the Moroccans. However, this is a T.V. show about compassion. Melilla, Ceuta, and the Canaries have been a part of Spain for centuries, so it's understandable that the Spanish in the 1920s saw it as a home, and so did the indigenous people from nearby areas. This is a T.V. show about forgiveness and seeing the humanity in people who are different. It's a telenovela (which is a genre), so you can only compare it to other telenovelas, not T.V. shows in general. The acting is great by telenovela standards and the costumes and sets are beautiful. This show has Muslim Middle Easterners, interracial relationships, and interfaith relationships, which are all rare things in telenovelas. Timely, wouldn't you say?

Very entertaining. Good to learn Spanish. Great acting. I like the vibes eventhough they are predictable as in Las Chicas del Cable & Gran Hotel. Bring on season 2 please. I wanna see 3 weddings;)

Great Series
dosblakey1 March 2019
This was a really great series. I didn't mind the voice dubbing although I do think that the original actor's voices should bbn have been used. If you think it is dull at first give it a chance then you will be hooked. I an hoping for a season 2.

Good story but...
sharidaadel11 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Nice story but I couldn't emphasize with Julia and Fidal who were seeking their selfish desires, couldn't understand who a woman sacrificed her saftey and came to war zone to find her fiance and then abandoned him so easily for another man and how both kept their relationship with (Fiance, Fiancee) until the end and manipulate them, so selfish!

And at the end how Julia survived the bombing, she supposed to die as she was so close! A poor storyline just to bring her back to Fidal who just changed his mind at last minute at his wedding day from his Fiancee although he didnt know she deceived him about pregnancy!

It would perfect if the writer kept Fidal with Susana together and killed Julia and Andres in the bombing accident it would be more realistic!

A beautiful war TV show.
hannahblue171929 August 2019
This show is about Medicine and war, focusing on the Army medical doctors and the first lady nurses, women coming from nobility and a life of luxury to 19th century Morocco in the middle of the Spanish war. It's about love and how lives may change during the war, when what really matters becomes priority. The nurses are the center of this show, they're brought far from home, with soldiers dying or getting shot around them, and they need to be compassionate and strong, taking hard decisions when needed in order to save lives, or to mitigate their suffering. As a healthcare ER professional, I could understand and interact so much with their plight. They were opening the way for women in the medical workplace, first as nurses, and later as doctors, with the same challenges to be feminine, compassionate, and strong leaders. Kudos to the lovely Amaia Salamanca and the handsome Alex Garcia. The other nurses are perfect as well in their roles. The interfaith couple is a role model. But Alicia Borrachero is just perfect as the Chief Nurse, a real character, the Duchess of Victoria. A statue was dedicated to her in Spain for her leading role to women in the nursing profession. They were making history. Eagerly waiting for a second season.

100% Pro-Spanish Imperialism/Aristocracy but....Enjoyable!
edennehy20 June 2019
Interesting to look at how some Spanish people may view their past (very similar to the pro-aristocracy BS in Downton Abbey). Of course right wing nostalgia is back in vogue in both the UK and Spain....anyway it's still quite entertaining - particularly if you want something light..

Good watch
helenakit27 June 2020
This is the kind of series Joey Tribbiani would star in, and the American dubbing is abysmal. However, I found it gripping and couldn't stop watching it.

javierruiberriz,
xi-na18 September 2018
Javierruiberriz, you should study more history and vaccinate yourself against patriotism: Ceuta and Melilla did exist before the Portuguese and Spanish intromission and expansionism, under the pretext of protecting themselves. Ceuta from Phoenician establishments, through the Romans, the Byzantines and various Germanians until the Arab invasion and intermittences between the kingdom of Castile and North African dynasties. It was not until 1415 that his story is as we know it. Melilla also has Phoenician ancestry; First it was called Punic Rusadir and its current name could come from Tamazight "Tamlilt". Abderramán III created the Taifa de Melilla in 927, which was integrated into the Caliphate of Córdoba and maintained close relations with the Muslim Hispania of al-Andalus. In 1497 everything changed and its future became linked to Spain via the Medina-Sidonia. Ceuta and Melilla have never ever belonged to Morocco, javierruiberriz? Are and always be Spanish? Do you still believe that? Spain was a nation when the hosts of Tarik arrived in Spanish territory in 711? Did they already exist in 711 Sevilla and Madrid? All of Morocco was only tribes for the time? I think you should know and heal yourself of your ignorance or maledicted nationalism. Idrisíes, Meriníes and Hafsíes were not simple tribes, but empires with their domains to both sides of the Straits. Ceuta and Melilla have their North African past, it's just a fact that you have nationalist sentiments. And about the series ... it's as manic as it is flimsy.

Love and War
mona_r-719-5867327 May 2018
Loved the series. Binged watched and didn't want it to end. Great performers, POOR dubbing. Voices did not match their looks, but I didn't care, or care if the historical points were correct, or the correct insignias on the uniforms, it's not was wonderfully done and worth watching.

Now because no on Season 2!

Interesting.... but too many love triangles
mgumsley15 April 2020
There is much I enjoyed about this Spanish series set in the Rif War, especially as it was one I knew very little about, except that the Spanish were known to have used nerve gas at one stage. It's a beautifully staged series, the hospital in fact looks a little grand, but it may well have been typical at that time. The dubbing and scripting is a bit hackneyed, but the general storyline seemed to follow the course of the war quite accurately. There are a lot of love affairs going on, and the plot suffers from too many break ups due to the love triangles. The presence and irritation caused by military authorities in the hospital seems very authentic, and the love affair between Larbi and Magdalena is honest and touching. In fact her optimism touches the whole cast for at times the story is very melodramatic. I enjoyed the story with all its flaws and I was interested to see the Spanish are just as interested in royalty as we are, because the Queen seemed to make all the decisions regarding the hospital. I would like to see a second series,I think this was quite promising.

Entertaining War Drama
grow3864 October 2018
This series is from the creators of Grand Hotel, Velvet and Cable Girls. The creator and her team know how to produce dramas with story lines and characters that really draw the viewers into their world.

julia is getting annoying
boraksbianchi30 January 2021
I love the period costumes and settings, beautiful scenery and minimal history lesson @ a war as an American I obviously knew nothing about. I understand it's a soapy drama but Julia running around willy nilly in the middle of a war has gotten a bit ridiculous, doesn't anyone ever wonder where she is? Everybody is there for her and supports her wild ideas but she is never interested or aware of "friends" problems or even asks when something is obviously wrong . she is beginning to get unlikable for her total self absorption and leaving the hard work to everyone else. love the character development of Magdalena. The men are all very handome and it's the secondary characters I want to know more about. But I recommend it, I'd give it an 8 1/2 if Julia wwas more likable. very decent actors

Predictable until the last episode
ejh-6062216 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The main love story was established very early and nothing could change the outcome either in my imagination or in the series. The end was the perfect confirmation of what I thought would happen, although the last episode actually was the most unforeseeable and most eventful one by far.

I liked the actresses playing Magdalena and Pilar, and it's not like this series wasn't worth watching at all. But the lead characters mostly just left an unsympathetic impression. And overall the premise didn't have much worth at all.

The story itself never felt like a story. It was just a portrayal of the hospital at a ceratin time, and for how long I don't know. I had no potential ending in sight when I watched it and as it turned out the show itself hadn't either. It just stopped (although the last episode was very eventful though as I said).

Same scenarios as Grand Hotel.
acbeattie23 July 2020
Started to watch this. Lightweight love story but so far no mention of the appalling use of mustard gas dropped between 1921 and 1924 bought from the Germans who were banned from using it after the Versailles agreegment.

Question ...
viola-0771214 February 2018
Hi there. We're currently on the 4th episode of the 1st season and so far so good. It reminds me of a good, old fashion soap opera. The sets are quite elaborate and we're enjoying the outdoor location scenes a lot. I usually change the channel when I see a show with subtitles but decided to tough it out for the sake of my mother who is truly enjoying the show, As per my question, I was wondering what year it was shot and more importantly, is there going to be a 2nd season? If so, can you tell me when it starts? Thanks in advance, Lori
