Didn't have too high expectations here, and overall it wasn't a failure

Warning: Spoilers
The title "Best in Sex: 2017 AVN Awards" is fairly telling for this awards show that aired in late April 2017, so is pretty much exactly 2.5 years old now. The director is once again Gary Miller and there were more writers working on this one than I expected. I wonder if one of these can ever make it to an Emmy nomination. Probably not. But these under 90 minutes were still okay overall and maybe people who do not only have a general interest in awards shows, but also care deeply (no pun intended) for the adult film industry actually really enjoyed the outcome here. One thing that baffled me for the AVN Awards and this is not the first time is that they actually get really big music acts, this time Flo Rida, who consequently did not only get one early stage performance, but also closed the show eventually. Okay well I cannot say too much about the individiual categories because I neither knew the actors nor the films they were from and after looking up 2 or 3 films that won awards I don't think I have missed much honestly. Nonetheless it is not difficult at all to come up with positive stuff here too. The girls were with hardly no exceptions really beautiful and stunning and I have seen differently when it comes to adult film stars. Also as much as I can judge as a straight male, same applies to the guys. Also nice that beauty ops (in the sense of plastic surgeries), especially in terms of breast size, do not seem to be the rule anymore here. Of course, everybody can decide on their own what they do with their bodies, obviously if they play in movies like these, but I do not really find it too aesthetic. I also liked that in older AVN Awards shows they showed obscene and vulgar cuts to the audience where girls flashed their boobs or started making out for no reason, but this was not the case here again and it was nice. No need to emphasize the porn component too much. It is really included sufficiently in the show already.

As for the host(s), I liked them better in other editions and the guy was fairly forgettable for the 2017 edition. Still it's alright. Of course, the jokes were almost always dirty and I did not mind. Also nice that they included a little tribute at the very end to one who made an impact, but was no longer with them because the AVN Awards do not have an in memoriam segment (yet). Okay let me think what else can I say. Oh yeah, even if I was not familiar with any of the actresses and actors, there was one I found downright beautiful who stood out to me not only because of her blue hair and that was Kati3kat. Never heard of her before and she won the fanaward for Favorite Cam Girl. I am curious about her now. The funniest moment of the night was maybe when New Starlet was announced and it was not Elsa Jean who ended up with the award how we see her disappointed and not sure how much of it was real and how much was acting. The categories some sound like from the Oscars (e.g. male performer of the year) and some clearly not (best anal sex scene) and that is alright. Also there is a category that is named Transsexual Performer of the Year, but while there is awards for Best Boy/Girl Scene and Best Girl/Girl Scene, it still lacks Boy/Boy. Just came to mind when we hear one guy on the stage talking about discrimination against adult film performers. i sort of agree you know, but still you should not discriminate against anybody either then. Okay I think this is pretty much it. I am not sure I am as happy as the awards recipient that the Best Picture Award here keeps going to parodies of "real" films because this way the defining adult films seem to lack unique creative impact and it also goes against the form of discrimination mentioned earlier. But that is just my opinion. All in all, this one gets a thumbs-down from me and unless you really like adult films, then this is not worth your time, even if admittedly I have seen way worse AVN Awards ceremonies in the past.
