Collins Travels Around the World

And home is where your heart is and sometimes the whole world can be your home or at least feel close to it, as Phil Collins does in this long awaited clip single from "Not Jacket Required", released on the year previous of the video. In 1985, his smash-hit album brought him to new audiences, far from the Genesis fanbase and gave Collins a massive successful world tour that was pretty much in the locations presented in the video (New York, Paris, London, Sydney, Hollywood, Chicago and Tokyo). So why not having fun and produce something during the whole experience?

During his Live-Aid concerts the extravagance (he admits it) of being in two different and distant cities in a matter of 24 hours can almost be felt here in "Take Me Home" thanks to the magical of editing process that puts all those world moments together of Phil Collins making trips and singing a powerfully charged song. It doesn't fit my idea of the song exactly which I feel as being moody, solitary and reflective while the many shots of Collins in those cities are too much happy, comfortable and colorful, when the real idea is to get a break and go back home (there's a darker meaning to it, according to Collins, if I'm not mistaken). Yet the final idea connects him back from the wonderful world of Oz and leads him back from where he started: his own place. That whole message as seen is really evocative and beautiful, something we can connect with the artist.

It's an excellent video, one of my favorite of Phil though not so widely known as "Against All Odds". The minor criticism is that with all the cities he visited probably lots of images ended up on the cutting room floor and the original long version of the song (7 minutes long with an amazing instrumental intro until his voice finally comes in) could be made instead of this radio-edit. Mostly, I'm making my point because of the music since the video consists of him being a tourist who sings a lot and has plenty of special moments. If not for that, the music makes it all. Fun trivia fact: Sting and Peter Gabriel were back-vocalists in the track. 9/10
