- In the premiere, Lou petitions to take over as director of the theater program in an attempt to revitalize his passion for teaching, but quickly realizes he has his work cut out for him. His controversial decision to change the musical to the more provocative "Spring Awakening" and his atypical casting choices create a ripple effect for the program's assistant director Tracey Wolfe. the school's football coach Sam Strickland, and the students in the show.
- Feeling unfulfilled after seventeen years of teaching English literature at Stanton High, Lou, looking for something to rejuvenate especially his love for teaching, applies to take over the recent vacancy of the school's Theater Program head. To Lou's amazement, Evan gives him the job immediately on his request. This move may come as a surprise to Gail, with who he didn't even discuss the issue before asking Evan, the surprise especially as they are still dealing with Gordy's problem. The family in general still needs to be Lou's first priority. At school, the first hurdle for Lou is dealing with Tracey, who was the heir apparent to the job and who was already preparing the next production of "Grease", which would have been the third time for this production in the past decade. Lou wants to challenge himself, the students, and the audience, which would be comprised primarily of parents and the student body, with a production with a little more substance, his choice being "Spring Awakening" which includes themes such as rape, abortion, homosexuality and incest all among teens. The student body in general, including those who normally audition for the school's musicals, may not be prepared to invest themselves as human beings in such material, unlike the light lyrics, such as "ramma lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong", they need not be invested in to sing appropriately. Lou's approach to casting goes against the norms especially for the school, which could cause further problems of the students being taken out of their normal roles within their peer group, especially as other goings-on in the community are affecting what is happening to them. With all these hurdles, Lou may not only not be able to get the production off the ground even before it starts, but be crushed by all the weight of the problems tumbling on top of him. Through it all, he will discover that some of the students he meets through the process are dealing with some of those difficult issues highlighted in the show in real life.—Huggo
