- Claire Darrow reopened the family law firm of Darrow and Darrow after her mother, Joanna Darrow, one half of the name, closed the firm following the death of her husband, the other half of the name, and moved to New York to pursue the big cases and money. Claire more resembles her father, who always looked out for the little guy and felt that the truth would always win the day. That difference between mother and daughter has led to their estrangement. Widowed herself now for five years, Claire has employed who she affectionately considers a bunch of misfit lawyers like herself. Another misfit in her life is her daughter Lou, an academically bright twelve year old who has skipped a few grades and is now in high school, her nerd status, like Claire, which has left her friendless and thus miserable despite Claire's insistence that she be true to herself, friends or not. A major jolt occurs in Claire and Lou's lives when Joanna comes back, not only needing a place to live but wanting to become a partner in the firm following a professional mishap in New York which has made her persona non grata among that professional circle. As such, Joanna wants the firm to move into a new, money-making direction taking big clients that Claire would not normally even consider. This situation comes on the heels of Claire taking the case of Dave Kellerin, an ex-con that runs her favorite doughnut shop, he who is accused of robbing Drescher's Jewelry Store. While most of the evidence against Dave is circumstantial albeit still credible, the one piece of evidence that seems irrefutable against him is that a $3,000 Rolex watch from the store was found in his bag. Claire trying to work through the case which includes being a guardian of sorts to a frantic Dave who can't bear the thought of going back to jail coincides with Lou's pains of being the young nerd in high school, Joanna who may have her own thoughts of how to deal with Lou's problems. Making the case more complex is that the Assistant District Attorney Miles Strasberg has requested being the lead for the prosecution all seemingly in an order to be near Claire, who he has relentlessly asked out for years to no avail thus far in Claire's life being solely the firm and Lou since being widowed.—Huggo
