Ribbon breathes realism in every frame - will go down as an underrated beauty!
thirdvantagepoint6 November 2017
Ribbon is a subtly played yet on-your-face act of life that does not yell melodrama for a minute and breathes realism in every frame! In fact, it is a poignant and matured study of life's struggles in the Maximum City (or for that matter any other city) where young working couples go through the grinding ups and downs of life and its various shades and yet keep going on, just like a rolling reel of a ribbon!

The film works very effectively on multiple fronts:

-> This slice of life cinema tells the tale as a matter of fact without getting judgemental about why certain things happen or whose onus is it. These are characters very relatable, they are not perfect, they struggle, they lose their cool, they stand by each other as rock solid support when needed, and they also fight with each other with wild outbursts of all resentments every couple would have gone through! Co- writers Rakhee Sandilya and Rajeev Upadhyay keep all the proceedings extremely grounded and hence connect this couple to the audience right through all the trials and tribulations that they go through from beginning to end. Yes, there are scenes where the monotony of life shows up and one feels nothing much is happening, but isn't that what life is about?

-> Shoutout for the excellent work by Rakhee Sandilya, the director and her entire team! The camera work through handhelds, the neat production design gives a great sense of the cramped urban spaces, or creeky creches, reputed schools, small but thriving corporate firms and everything surrounding them! The wardrobe and styling of the leads is contemporary and is totally in sync with the tone of the film! The background score is measured and sparse as needed! The editing is lazy in parts, but I did not find the film stretched or slow for a moment! Rakhee keeps it all under her control throughout, and sucks you in to her story.

-> The biggest success of Rakhee though is the amazing performance that she extracts out of Kiearra Soni, the little child! Your heart will go out to her innocence and unadulterated smile as the story unfolds! Aashi is the hidden treasure of the film! Does not matter so much that the other side-characters don't have much to do, or can match up to this wonderful little girl or her parents!

-> And then, we have these powerhouse performances by both Kalki Koechlin and Sumeet Vyas, who bring everything to life in Ribbon! Kalki outshines her own self in a fully author backed role, and delivers one of her best performances here! Her face and her eyes is this vivid canvas of emotions that expresses everything without effort and that is what differentiates her from the rest! But, full marks to Sumeet Vyas too - he actually gets a character arch that is not fully developed in comparison and yet excels matching up to Kalki frame by frame! I hope to see him in meatier roles in many more films to come!

If cinema means a slice of life reflection for you where problems not necessarily come to a well-defined closure, but leaves you moved and disturbed; then do give Ribbon its due! Relevant films like these ought to be made and discussed, and for that to happen, they need to be watched! Go - Watch it!

So Real
affableankur-7563810 November 2017
This kind of Cinema is being missed. I recalled Boyhood. This is so real and aptly dramatized. Kalki and Sumeet both did an amazing work. Their emotions, their struggles can be felt. That little one year old girl was also superb. I specially loved the climax and how all that made sense to title this film as "Ribbon".

Bound Together
tanujpoddar15 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bollywood is a dream factory. For most parts it meats out obnoxious sequences far away from life, just to help its audience realize on screen, what if.

Rakhee Sandilya's Ribbon on the other hand tries to mirror life in its minute details. a young couple ( Kalki as Sahana & Sumeet as Karan) who are ambitious about their career and aspire for a picture perfect life, go through the turmoils of life.

They haven't planned for a baby (as they have other financial responsibilities to take care of) but Sahana gets pregnant, they are not sure how to react to it, but trust on each others support to raise a family. Sahana gets demoted when she joins back after childbirth and has to leave her job because of bad treatment. Karan has to find other alternatives to make ends meet and takes up an opportunity in another city, coming back home only on weekends. As they find solutions to manage something, a new challenge crops up. As the world seems to fall apart they still find each others support. But how much can the ribbon binding them really stretch. Things really snap when they find out that their child had been molested. They really need to find strength in themselves and in each other to get through this.

It is a beautiful narrative, devoid of any overtly melodramatic moments, trying to aptly portray the busy career-oriented couples of today. What really makes it work though is the excellent performance of the actors. It is not an entertainer, but a slice of life in the real sense.

Molecule Review: Ribbon (6 Stars)
nairtejas18 September 2018
What put me terribly off is the concocted diversity of issues that a couple face in Rakhee Sandilya's Ribbon, a sweet little film that turns sour right when you are enjoying it. But that's exactly the whole point of showcasing what a couple transforming into a nuclear family face in a metro city in India. From unabashed gender discrimination at work to familial tiffs to issues with the functioning of a household, Ribbon has it all, topped with a violent performance by Kalki Koechlin and an equally competing one by Sumeet Vyas. Parenthood hits them like a typhoon in the US and all that follows is what I like to call new-age problems that do not have solutions. Along with fitting music and numbing dialogues by Raghav Dutt, director Sandilya takes her viewers on a journey that is relatable and nonchalant, eventually taking them to the end of a cliff and threatening that she will push. Ribbon is heartbreaking but it does not fool its audience. It has its flaws - with the major one being convolution - but then indie films have stories to tell. With it with your partner and you will take away a thing or two. TN.

A good low budget gem.
Thedudeabides_thelaw15 March 2022
A good low budget gem. Has a documentary feel to it, while intimately looking at a couple's life. You feel you are living with them and that's some achievement. Kalki is a good actress and does her part well but seemed miscast because of her ethnicity for a film that's so close to being real. I did not get why the title is Ribbon though.

The rare kind of movie that you were searching for...
theveiledagnostic11 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Contrary to popular opinion (based on its opening day reviews), "Ribbon" is one of those movies that has the power to really speak to a particular set of Indians who constitute about a little less than a quarter of the nation's population. It is for those young Indian adults who are still ripe in their early years out of the protective nest of family and student environment. It is for the "not-so- niche-anymore" set of latest adults who impress in their corporate jobs, managing the other "not- so-young" adults during the day; and frequent music gigs and stand up comedy acts as they swig their brewed beer or wine at night. It is for those just married out of love found in college or just starting to get serious with the one they are currently with. I retract my statement that it is for them. This is about them. This is them.

The plot highlights several widespread but lesser known troubles of the modern Indian society. It shows how the sophisticated Indian offices are still not so sympathetic towards a women's basic right to a maternity leave. The male chauvinist still cannot help but jump upon a chance to step past and stomp the female on his way up the office ranks, making sure that she does not get back up and pose a threat again, in fear that in absence of her unfair circumstances, she might actually beat him to the throne when it comes down to raw talent and intelligence. A behaviour in line with the oppression of the weaker sex practiced since time immoral in rural households of urban cities.

The story depicts the relationship of the modern Indian adult very well. Unlike the conventional teaching that two individuals should think and act like one under wedlock, the men and women of today have a well established understanding and awareness about their own personal space and freedom. They never forget that they are independent individuals at the end of the day. They loathe dependency. They know it as the enemy. They are well aware of their rights. In some cases, even too aware for their own good. But, that does not mean these relationships are doomed to fail. These are very interesting human beings and they know how to keep each other entertained. It will be foolish to undermine the importance of that. They also happen to have a much broader mindset with a capacity to be much more understanding and hence, completely skipping some of the potential fights that can wreck marriages. The movie shows the unadulterated version of the cute Indian romance. It gives a peek into the formation and life of a nuclear family in India today. We get to see that the young Indian adult today is impulsive. One unfortunate incident due to neither of their fault, nullifies all the happiness they created over the years, makes them turn on each other and even jump to separation, all in one single night's argument. This is followed up by the new found Indian maturity where they have the ability to organize their jumbled thoughts, think objectively and in silent understanding, undo any foolish statements made in haste.

The plot twister in the movie is about a discouragingly widespread crime of child molestation. We can clearly see the unanticipated nature of this offence as the parents are left taking wild guesses while they run over the list of people their precious daughter comes in contact with in a day, all trusted guardians they have known for years. There is the society's resistance to accept the occurrence of the crime itself, then the blame game and finally, the repression of the act itself because the ones affected, do not think the possibility for justice is worth scarring their daughter for life.

This movie has a very relatable narration and some powerful questions alongside it.

Which pages are we missing from the books of Indra Nooyi or Angela Merkel? Or is it the Indian men who need to take a page out of someone else's book?

The sufferings of the young Indian adults, with their fancy cars and take out food, are often dismissed in front of the millions of others who "really struggle" to put even a square meal on their family's plates. But is it really a reasonable comparison or excuse to downplay their issues? If the poor get their quota, then don't the "privileged" get to keep their problems?

Which punishment fits the crime of child molestation? Who will provide justice, when the lady responsible currently is blindfolded?

Urban Family Drama
jomc-7542928 May 2020
Sahana and Karan are young couples who lives in Mumbai City leading a middle class life. The story of the movie portrays the changes happens to the smooth going life of them and becomes rocky when Sahana got pregnant. It shows how they manage their parenthood along with the jobs, EMI's and meeting the work deadlines.

A realistic and genuine approach to the issues and challenges faced by young couples in marriage life. Kalki and Sumeet both did a really good job as Sahana and Karan, it was a perfect choice for Kalki.

Starts with a concept and ends in another
iamsmj22 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Well, the story started off really good with the realities and challenges faced by two working couples in raising a child. It had very minute details about each phases in life. However it ends up in some other concept? Or is it for the viewer to assume or decide?

Good one time watch

Surreal
ayushparasar15 January 2021
This movie is a reality check - deals with all major issues in a married life. A newly married couple find out that you need more ingredients than just love to fuel a marriage. And their relationship starts falling apart by the burden of their work and parenthood. The writing is not superb( ending could have been better ) but it's cruel and real and it's almost impossible for anyone to not relate. It's more from the perspective of the mother and how difficult it is for a working lady to handle a baby while working and all that she has to face at the workplace. So a must watch for girls.

Sumeet Vyas and Kalki Koechlin have done tremendous work and it's good watch( if you are ready to face the reality).

"Nothing much great in the storyline but there's a subtle & naturalistic charm"
ConfusedRoulette26 February 2020
The film showcases the usual way of life that a modern family would undergo. The plot unfolds in a simple manner with a clean approach. The natural and realistic charm along with the relatable characters might be the only thing that keeps you engaged. It doesn't have much of surprises or twists as such. The viewer keeps expecting something unusual to happen but there's nothing really great that happens throughout the length of the film. One can watch this one only if they just want to pass their time!

A successful attempt to show some real middle income family problems.. Lead actors are brilliant..
akin2525 June 2019
Kalki - Though she is already one of my favourites, but I used to think that she can only do justice with a character that is outgoing, modern, free-spirited, carefree, super energetic, youthful and somewhat irresponsible but this movie, to a happy surprise, broke that myth in my head. Her character in this movie is an ambitious woman but at the same time is a loving mother who cares a lot about her family and is trying hard to balance the responsibilities of a mother, a wife, a daughter and her career. Kalki perfectly fitted in the character.

Sumeet - I've always seen him in supporting roles and all I could see was that, he is not a bad actor but in this movie he had one of the two lead roles and he was brilliant in his performance! After this movie, he is a new name added in my list of good actors.

Last 25 Minutes saved the film.
harishmadireddi12 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
My reaction after 45minutes was whats the kind of movie this, nothing is going further story is going no where but the way everything from first scene got connected during the conversation between both husband and wife at the end has showed how the marriage life works out and its chain where a conversations starts at Z and comes back to A. Its actually a strong caution for parents who are working where in the stage of upbringing of their child they blindly trust many people.

Impressive!
unismankur1 May 2022
It portrays the unprecedented and pragmatic challenges of a couple especially woman in India, the resistances in her organisation during her pregnancy. Then as parent, they came to know their child has been abused. These problems are inevitable and it tests your character as couple - how you can address it as team.

This movie is underrated, I believe people should encourage such initiatives.

Talks about topics we need to talk about.
raja-mishra720 June 2019
N a polarised world, we often ignore the ghastly truths that common people have to suffer on a regular basis.

An ordinary, "ambitious" middle class family, weighed by the loans and tasking private jobs, unable to find time for small pleasures of life- wakes up to a shocking incident. That's the regular Joe's life in a metro. This is what keeps the urban middle class up all night.

Middle class is not affected by the political or religious concerns, they are too busy weaving their own nest, their own life. What matters to them is the family and the system that surrounds them.

Great acting, not that it was any surprise. Great direction and cinematography. Wonderful story telling, in a world of goal drive stories, this one stands out for its treatment.

Improvements: a) the pace at which the story was running- and- b) the aloofness from the cultural reality of an Indian society. It was as if this movie was revolving in a cocoon of its own.

R 4 Ribbon
sameerkhan66614 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The shots taken were not professional, camera panned shaky if you closely examine it. The background actors should have done better with their acting skills. Coming to the story, it was mediocrely made but genuinely needed. First point of subject is struggle about a pregnant woman who struggles in corporate office and after pregnancy her built-up heights in her office crashes due to sexism and injustice. And the second most important aspect that the movie has pinpointed is about child-abuse, this subject came after dealing with the previous subject and how parents fought with the school system and all to get their daughter her right.
