Well I could call out when the going gets tough. The things that we've learnt are no longer enough

Warning: Spoilers
The colony is starting to come together in episode 5. They set about building a light beacon that could be seen from space, working on the assumption that the mothership can't hear them, but might be able see them. Maureen though, believes that they have bigger problems, having measured the suns variations in rise times, and decides that doing a Felix Baumgartner is what's required to prove her theory. The kids meanwhile, are still lamenting the decision to bench the robot and are still avoiding telling their dad the truth about what happened on the ship.

It's another pretty solid episode. The CGI budget stretches to a few more creatures this time, particular the larger bear/tiger like creatures that appear towards the end. Those, and the balloon flight look pretty good, if a colour change field doesn't impress quite as much. Across the episode, Dr Smith's skill at manipulation becomes more apparent, both as she convinces Will to recall the Robot to the camp and convinces Don that she didn't leave him to die in the storm - though her overall motivations still aren't yet apparent.

It's not without the flaws that we've come to expect though. At one point, Maureen is dragged along by a spike through her leg when the wind catches the balloon, but in subsequent scenes she shows no effect of this injury at all. Also, was the robot already on his way back to the site when Will called him? As if not, he covered an awful lot of distance in a short amount of time.

It's nothing spectacular, but nothing disastrous either, the intrigue deepens and plot advances. I'm still on board!

Action, Plot Advancement, and Manipulation
GunnersMate16 April 2018
Parker Posey is just a fabulous and awful Dr. Smith. Her portrayal is spot-on every single episode; she takes everything that that 1960s Dr. Smith was and, with a crime-filled backstory, distills it into a self-indulgent, manipulative, and disturbingly believable villain - which is where the awful comes in. Dr. Smith is simply an awful waste of breathable air, and since every tale of science fiction need something bad to battle, Dr. Smith is our primary consistent evil to be overcome (...or neutralized...).

Maxwell Jenkins is wonderful and heartfelt as young Will Robinson - he is the heart of the series and perhaps his best yet in this episode.

The episode itself, Transmission, takes full advantage of Dr. Smith's villainy, Will Robinson's sweetly complex relationships with the Robot and his Father, adds a good dose of action (sci fi creatures are a welcomed sight) and some solid plot advancement regarding the colonists, their planet, and the Resolute and the end result is satisfying and well played.

Maureen finally figures out what's going on with planet while the rest are making a beacon so the Resolute can see them on the surface. This episode also has a moment in the cave where Penny writes 'the Robinsons were here' that I really liked. This show has great mix of character development and action and deception of course by Dr Smith (so called) who is up to her no good resulting in havoc at the beacon site. Enjoy.

Science: F

Warning: Spoilers
First thing first: Will is dumb. He acts like a depressed philosopher crying every 5 minutes. Smith acts like the bad guy for 4 episode but she still hasn't do anything bad yet

Science is nuts. The woman went to a mountain top and was almost knocked out from a cliff by hypersonic winds but she literally went to space with just a suit and a balloon without anything going wrong😐

So much wasted potential

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers:

This series although not perfect, had great potential to be awesome. This episode ruined that. Horrible plot development, poorly written script, and no character development may have ruined the series for me. They made the characters so dumb that they could not figure out Dr Smith is bad. Teen daughter is a miracle worker of a doctor but can't figure out they have been harboring a psychopath even after it was revealed she left folks to die. Such a dumb episode in an otherwise interesting series.

This show feels about as lost in space as the characters are

Warning: Spoilers
I have no experience with Lost in Space before beginning this series and I can't say that I've grown a desire to go back and watch the older stuff, even though the originals are usually better. I can't wrap my head around these characters, especially most of the women.

Dr. Smith is a villain so of course she's awful although she lacks the charisma a lot of other villains have so I don't have fun watching her, even though I normally love villains. I find her boring at best.

I didn't like the wife at first either but they're actually doing a good job of fleshing her out and making her more balanced, but it's Judy and Penny I don't get.

Maybe she was this way originally but Judy comes across as a Mary Sue. She's the brave, daring hero who always gets things done while also being a doctor at the age of 18? That's two really big archetypes in one and even with adult characters, it would veer towards Mary Sueism, whether the character was male or female (imagine Star Trek if Captain Kirk and Bones were one character instead of two, for a bit of an example), but an 18 year old? It's just not believable, sorry.

As for Penny, she was cool until she bragged about torturing animals as a child in a prior episode and her mother laughed about it? These are the characters we're supposed to root for?

Not to mention, some of the writing just doesn't hold up. For example, in this episode, there's a flashback that has the mother and children listing pros and cons of staying on earth and going to alpha centauri. One pro for earth was that governments were mostly stabilized unlike alpha centauri which was just starting up but then they turned around and said a pro to alpha centauri is that there's no wars or instability. That is a direct contradiction and on top of that, of course there's no human wars in a place with little to no humans?

It's an interesting concept to be sure and I'm going to try to keep watching it just to see where it goes, but I honestly have no idea how they managed to make so many of the main characters so unlikeable.

Edited for a typo and to better explain what I meant with Judy.

"Dr. Smith" Not All Bad
squallypuckerdum29 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So Dr. Smith is an alias taken by a woman who steals the real Dr. Smith's ID as he lies wounded from an ongoing alien attack. This woman had conned her way onto the flight initially by drugging her sister and stealing her implanted ID. She then runs across the man who her sister was having an illicit affair with because he just happens to be the guy checking the new arrivals onto the space ship - what are the odds there, eh? However, she happens to be able to bundle him into a nearby airlock (after he presumably leaves his post unmanned) and eject him into space. She could have saved him but ignores the safety device and allows him to die.

She is apprehended for this action but just as retribution is about to be taken the aliens attack. Phew! Once on the new planet she leaves her rescuer to his fate in a violent storm - after stealing his last flare. What a gal. She even, in this episode, manipulates an 11 year old into jumping into a melee involving two dinosaur style animals as they beat up his robot. All so that the child will release the robot from its programming that prevents it harming living things so that she, in turn, can, presumably, use that violence at some future point.

Still, on the plus side, at the beginning of the episode we see that she really likes pretty, floaty bugs and stuff. Aww, so that's OK then and not at all out of character.

The most idiotic character
nemesis-886 February 2022
This "doctor Smith" makes no sense at all. She doesn't have a goal, she doesn't do anything but playing some stupid meaningless tricks. And maybe it'd have a meaning if she was played by a good actress. But talentless hack Parker Posey can't even bat eyelids convincingly. She overacts in every single scene. She can't even stand still like the character she's trying to play! Every gesture, phrase, intonation, eye movement is fake and unrealistic. WHO casted her?!

No hope for the future of humanity!
rsvp32116 April 2018
Too funny - huge predators attack their base, the response is to make a few sharp sticks! lol

Going to their new planet, did they not anticipate at least hunting for food?! Or, do they have enough dehydrated food to last indefinitely? They even have a 3D printer to make futuristic weapons, but instead they prefer to hide behind aluminum picnic tables when attacked. lol
