The colony is starting to come together in episode 5. They set about building a light beacon that could be seen from space, working on the assumption that the mothership can't hear them, but might be able see them. Maureen though, believes that they have bigger problems, having measured the suns variations in rise times, and decides that doing a Felix Baumgartner is what's required to prove her theory. The kids meanwhile, are still lamenting the decision to bench the robot and are still avoiding telling their dad the truth about what happened on the ship.
It's another pretty solid episode. The CGI budget stretches to a few more creatures this time, particular the larger bear/tiger like creatures that appear towards the end. Those, and the balloon flight look pretty good, if a colour change field doesn't impress quite as much. Across the episode, Dr Smith's skill at manipulation becomes more apparent, both as she convinces Will to recall the Robot to the camp and convinces Don that she didn't leave him to die in the storm - though her overall motivations still aren't yet apparent.
It's not without the flaws that we've come to expect though. At one point, Maureen is dragged along by a spike through her leg when the wind catches the balloon, but in subsequent scenes she shows no effect of this injury at all. Also, was the robot already on his way back to the site when Will called him? As if not, he covered an awful lot of distance in a short amount of time.
It's nothing spectacular, but nothing disastrous either, the intrigue deepens and plot advances. I'm still on board!
