Nothing special,but watchable.

I recommend this movie for people who likes historical courtroom dramas and for Al Pacino completist! For me the best part of film is the final Pacino speech in court as a lawyer! I suppose all other people could find this movie flat and a little bit boring.

sitting in judgment
ferguson-628 May 2021
Greetings again from the darkness. World War II continues to provide the stories of individuals who were caught up in the horrific events surrounding the war - some folks acted heroically, some despicably, and still others simply did what they could to survive. Director Michael Polish (NORTHFORK, 2003) adapted the screenplay with Vance Owen and Darryl Hicks from the book by Mr. Owen and his father William E. Owen. It's the nearly forgotten story of an American woman drawn into the powerful Nazi propaganda machine, and subsequently tried for treason.

Mildred Gillars is a name few will be familiar with. Portrayed well here by Meadow Williams, Ms. Gillars was known as Axis Sally by American servicemen during WWII. Her radio broadcasts of Nazi propaganda alternately entertained and enraged Americans, and this depiction of her story shines a light on the lengths to which the Nazis utilized psychological warfare in conjunction with traditional tanks and guns.

Director Polish spends most of the movie's runtime on Gillars' trial for treason, which provides a courtroom for Oscar winner Al Pacino (now 81 years old) to play her attorney James Laughlin and chew scenery with an enthusiasm and fervor matched by few actors. Joining Laughlin at the defense table is green-behind-the-ears attorney (and former GI soldier) Billy Owen (Swen Temmell), whose warm approach contrasts well with Laughlin's gusto. The lead prosecutor John Kelly is played by Mitch Pileggi ("The X-Files"), and other supporting roles are covered by Lala Kent, Jasper Polish, and Carsten Norgaard.

Flashbacks are vital here, as we see Gillars "perform" her act, often in front of Joseph Goebbels, the chief propagandist of the Nazis during the war. Thomas Kretschmann (U-571, 2000) is excellent and sufficiently creepy as Goebbels, and some of the most intense scenes feature Goebbels and Gillars. Filmmaker Polish takes a sympathetic approach to Gillars, an approach surely to ruffle some patriotic feathers. The trial is not often-remembered in the aftermath of the war, but Ms. Gillars' story makes us wonder just what we might do if our life was threatened ... and just as importantly, how would our actions be judged after the fact?

In select theaters and On Demand May 28, 2021.

A great performance By Al Pacino
iibadr722 June 2021
I was thinking between 5/10 or 6/10 because it seems 6 is too much for it but WHAT a good preference by Al Pacino , sure until this he is totally able to nail every part he gets in his comfort zone, Like Hoffa in The Irishman 2019 , I hope he keeps going with those kinds of characters even if the movies they are in are not so great , watchable.

Axis Sally on Trial
blanche-221 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For some reason, as a kid, I went through the newspaper. Not sure how much I took in. But I remember some stories. One was about the release of Mildred Gillars, better known as Axis Sally. This would have been in 1961. I can remember my father didn't have very nice things to say about her.

American Traitor purports to tell the story of Gillars and presents her sympathetically. She was an American wanting to make it in show business who moved to Paris and then to Berlin in the 1930s. When the U. S. government told Americans to get out, she stayed because of her fiance (who was later killed in the service).

Originally she worked on the radio, reading propaganda to keep the U. S. out of joining Britain in the war. Once the U. S. got into the war, however, she no longer wanted to do that work and wanted to go home.

However, it was too late. The Germans had her passport and papers, and she either continued to read the scripts they gave her or have a very unpleasant time of it. She complied.

In this version of events, she was forced into sleeping with Goebbels (Thomas Kretschmann). He also beat her when she changed a word in a script. No way of knowing if these things are true. She was involved with Max Otto Koischwitz (Carsten Norgaard), who was her producer and whom she cared about very deeply.

Al Pacino plays her attorney, James J. Laughlin, and Sven Temmel is Billy Owen, his second chair (there is a small interview with Owen during the final credits). Laughlin's premise was that Gillars did what she had to do in order to survive, and that none of us know what we would have done. It's something to think about.

Meadow Williams is Mildred, and though the actress is 55 years old, she looks younger than the real Mildred, who was actually 44 or so at the time of her arrest. She uses a soft voice and a whiny, off key singing voice in the role.

Pacino as usual plays to the balcony but is believable as a no-nonsense attorney.

This was a vanity production of Williams, who inherited $8 million from her late husband. Production values suggest she has plenty of money left over.

Do NOT waste your time on this movie.
katykw-217 September 2021
It is slow and plodding. I found myself watching the clock and wishing it would soon be over. Almost every one of the characters is plastic and two-dimensional. Even Al Pacino (one of my favorite actors of all time) is not up to his usual level of excellence. Meadow Williams' character is like a Barbie doll. When she is on the witness stand, her movements are wooden and jerky. We are never invested in the scant storyline. We do not believe the characters are anything more than actors merely playing a part.

The cinematography is excellent and so are the sets. Ms. William's costumes are 1940s perfection. If the director had paid as much attention to character development as he did framing each and every shot, this movie might have kept my interest. I kept wanting to know Mildred's backstory. What brought her to be a traitor to her nation of origin? At a time in our nation's history of unparalleled patriotism and loyalty, I am at a loss to see how someone who, when offered a chance to leave the country of the aggressive nation, refused and stayed there. These questions are never addressed in the movie. Very disappointing.

Not a racy film, or an action pic but still a very interesting film showing us another part of the war. I found it interesting, sobering and very thought provoking. Just what would you do?.....

Barely watchable!
timetraveller86 June 2021
I only bothered to watch the movie from a historic interest and because of Al Pacino. Meadow Williams is for the most part unconvincing in the part while Pacino acts as if a gun was held to his head to play the role. (Pun intended.) The story is an interesting one and has a lot to say about individual accountability in a time of war and freedom of speech, and a remake with a better script and actors better suited to the parts could even make this Academy Award material.

Drama with a Standout Performance from Al Pacino
deepaligarcha28 May 2021
There are a lot of stories surrounding WWII that people don't know about until they get made into movies. The story of Mildred Gillars, also known as Axis Sally, is one of those. It is an interesting story

This cast was surprisingly very good for such a film as this. Everybody served their roles perfectly in the film.

Using the star power of Pacino as the defense lawyer was a great idea. He brings all his gravitas to the role which makes it stand out. He has his moments to shine but gives space for the others to do their thing as well. Thomas Kretschmann as Goebbels was pretty sinister in that role. I think anybody would be afraid of him. The plot had some twists and turns in it as well. That was good to not make it a straightforward story of this woman's trial.

To sum it all up... Al Pacino was the standout in this film. Otherwise, this film probably would have gone unnoticed by most people.

Portrayal of a willing collaborator as the victim!
haroot_azarian13 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
My contribution is from a complete different angle than my 20 predecessors' contributions! Actually there were no problems on the acting parts, both Paccino and Williams were convincing. However my beef is with the aspect of the movie! It portrayed Gillars as an innocent victim! She was a failed Broadway star who fell for a German in New York and went to live in Germany five years before the war began in order to be with him! When Americans were evacuated she decided to stay because of her ambition and hunger for the fame and glitter ended up getting caught up in the nazi propaganda machinery! Frankly she knew what she was doing! And she got off very lightly! What's even worse is the Italian Axis Sally could not even be tried because she had renounced her American citizenship. And she remained in Italy and was tried by and Italian court and I think only served 9 months in jail!

Sympathy for the Devil.
planktonrules13 February 2022
"American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally" is a dramatization of the trial of Mildred Gillars, the woman referred to as Axis Sally during WWII. This American woman was called this because after renouncing her citizenshp and moving to Germany, she began broadcasting for the German propaganda machine. What were the broadcasts? They involved trying to demoralize the Allied soldiers and she was similar to the woman known in the Pacific as 'Tokyo Rose'.

The film was okay...not bad, not good. I think I felt this way because although well made, late in the story the filmmakers tried to make the audience feel sorry for the woman. Considering she helped the Nazi war machine, she was a traitor...and I'd rather extend my sympathies towards someone a bit more deserving. Without this VERY sympathetic ending, I would have scored this one a bit higher.

Pacino is stellar, Relevant Pacino and story in twenty-first century.
indiapaige10 September 2023
Watched it for the Pacino performance, thats worth the time on its own. Unfortunately the other cast arent of his caliber, and the screenplay writing could be better.

Based on a true.story, again seventy-five years on, America again finds herself fighting fascism, authoritarianism and thus the relevance of elements of WWII stories.

The.major differences today are home front battles against homegrown treason, fascism compared to the all time freshman defense and/or excuse of the applying First Amendment rights.

Of-course America is not in the middle of WWII, those purporting fascism and authoritarian threats against opposing beliefs while perhaps seeming life threatening, dont compare with battles fought on Normandy beaches, Antwerp, Pacific Islands and real life or death survival skills necessary during WWII.

Watch it for the Pacino performance alone,or for the recurring relevance of treason among our ranks. Its always hard to transform literary media into performance arts.

The screenplay writers werent on par with other Pacino choices. Not all stories translate well in anyones hands.

WWII history buffs and Pacino admirers should given this a go. After all, Al Pacinos work on screen wasnt abundant in 2021. If you do choose to watch, be certain to stay for the films epilogue.

Pacino's acting carries this for the most
jayenjr8 July 2021
For fans of Al Pacino, most of us are by now familiar that a number of his movies would feature long - and sometimes - larger than life speeches. Think Scent of a woman, And Justice for All, Any Given Sunday, City Hall. Depending on one's preference, Pacino's speeches could either come across as good acting or hammy and over the top. Well, am glad to say that in Axis Sally, his lengthy delivery at the end is probably the apex of this movie, produced with such conviction, which IMHO, even betters his speech in the oscar winning Scent. You just stay fixated - that's how good the man is when he's in form. And at 81, who could better him?

Having said that, Meadow Williams also turns in a decent performance, managing to convince us that she's as much a victim of the era as she was also an opportunist. WW2 and courtroom drama aficionados should be pleased enough to spend viewing this on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Disappointing handling of an interesting case. Poorly written, badly paced and wooden acting doom this movie. Even Pacino can't save this one from the trash heap. Avoid.

A complex subject matter indeed.
tvberzins27 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A complex subject matter indeed. I wasn't sure if this movie was about Axis Sally or Axis Sally's lawyer. It is nice to see a different type of WW II movie. The question of what would you do in this situation is a very intense one indeed.

The actress was not the best. Pacino was good in his role, but at the end of the day it is hard to be sympathetic to a traitor- Axis Sally.

I am WW II history buff and had never heard of Goebells being a rapist. It could be true, but I never heard of it. Not sure of the overall abuse of Axis Sally; a search found nothing on this, so I am assuming it was just movie improvisation. In my opinion this hurts the overall story.

Couldn't finish it despite Al Pacino.
kizildere29 May 2021
I really tried but this movie just lacked so many things at once. Courtroom visuals looked like a Zoom background, subpar acting in general except the all time great Al Pacino, a lot of historical errors, etc. I don't know if Meadow Williams just wanted to act in a movie with Al Pacino and was willing to finance it with her late found inheritence but this was the first movie I have ever walked out of. Skip it.

Much better than it's current 5.6 rating

Always of interest to watch films based on true events, especially when previously not aware of it

Pacino was his normal worth watching self, and thought in the lead role Meadow Williams did a good job.

Not bad, but not too good.
aubreystormas6 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It honestly wasn't that bad, but mainly the girls acting was just not good or the singing either. And just the concept of the movie was dumb. I get it was based off a true story the fact that she actually had to serve 12 years over something that stupid baffles me because it's ignorant. It had potential to be a great film if they would've only changed actresses.

One of the best of Al Pacino&s recent acting
unixfreaxjp13 June 2021
World War II has many moral-related stories and this is one of them. This is a story of a life in one of greatest war, where an actress in the story has been given no other option instead one that she could not reject. It perfectly shows how naively media during the time could easily steer public opinion, to condemn someone before even being judged in court.

The story is about survival. The plot is good. I think Al Pacino is in his very best role in his character and he is giving his best acting, the overall cast performance doesn't disappoint me either.

If you like Al's act, this is gonna be one that you have to watch.

Victim of Nazi perfidy or wicked collaborator? You decide!
Turfseer10 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story of Mildred Gillars (aka Axis Sally), the American expatriate who was charged with treason for making radio propaganda broadcasts for the Nazis during World War II, is an interesting one-and we can thank Meadow Williams for producing it. Inheriting $800 million after her vitamin tycoon husband passed away in 2015 sure helped Ms. Williams in bringing the little known historical drama to the screen.

Williams is around 55 but looks quite good for her age, playing Gillars who was in her early forties when collaborating with the Nazis. The story jumps back and forth between Gillars' time in Germany and during her trial in a Washington, DC Federal Court in 1949. Al Pacino plays her defense attorney James Laughlin during the trial scenes along with the inexperienced young co-counsel Billy Owen (Swen Temmel, Williams' boyfriend in real-life).

Gillars had already been in Germany for approximately seven years when war broke out between Germany and the US. She was hired by Joseph Goebbels (Thomas Kretchmann) and worked for his Propaganda Ministry, utilizing her skills as an actress and singer, attempting to convince Americans that they should stay out of the war which was promoted as an exclusive "European affair."

Gillars was no different than many Americans who championed isolationism as the preferred national foreign policy. She got into trouble however by deciding to remain in Germany after war broke out between the US and Germany. Gillars had fallen in love with a German national who could not countenance the idea of living with Villars back in the US but he eventually was sent to the Eastern front where he was killed.

Gillars then fell in love with another American expatriate, radio producer Max Otto Koischwitz (Carsten Norgaard), who wrote one of the radio plays she acted in which ultimately got her convicted of treason.

The story becomes interesting when it becomes obvious that the film scenarists decide to treat Gillars sympathetically. The script calls for Williams to play Villars as extremely arrogant and it becomes clear that defense attorney Laughlin finds her so distasteful that instead he sends co-counsel Owen to deal with her directly in person while she's incarcerated.

It's not exactly Williams' fault for initially depicting Gillars as such a one-note character. The script shows her as bitter as she is the subject of mass hatred and unable to tell her side of the story. Eventually she warms up to Owen who lends a sympathetic ear-and during the trial she finally does get to explain why she did what she did.

The crux of the film is Laughlin's bold defense that Villars was forced to work for the Nazis against her will. Her passport had been confiscated and she was threatened with death if she did not cooperate. These points are made during the defense attorney's riveting closing argument.

As evidence that Gillars was a victim of Nazi perfidy (and not a collaborator), there's a scene where Goebbels beats and rapes her for going off script using the word "unbeatable" instead of Goebbels' preferred word "invincible" to describe the superiority of the German army. I question the veracity of all these scenes in which Gillars interacts with Goebbels as I had no idea that Goebbels spoke English at all and that a man in his position would have actually dealt with her directly.

I have mixed feelings about the strategy to treat Gillars sympathetically throughout the narrative. On one hand the feelings of sympathy were reflected in the jury's ultimate decision-she was acquitted of seven of the eight counts of treason. But public opinion was such that the jury probably felt obligated to convict her of at least one count. And although she was sentenced to 10-30 years in prison (paroled after 12), Laughlin's defense can be seen as a victory as he ensured that his client avoided the death penalty.

Although the sympathetic view may have ultimately been the correct one, such a view needed a little more nuance. In other words, there may have been a little too much sympathy here. While there is a scene in which Gillars bitterly complains about not being allowed to go home, there is also the whole issue of her relationship with Koischwitz who seems a lot more sympathetic to the Nazi cause than Gillars. How much of an influence did he have on her? Perhaps in reality she had mixed feelings about her German hosts as they did enable her to become a successful entertainer (and that of course is what she wanted in the first place).

Laughlin also made some interesting points in his client's defense, indicating that the soldiers did not take Gillars' propaganda broadcasts seriously and their morale was never seriously undermined. What's more at Gillars' insistence, she interviewed American POWs on the air and gave comfort to families who had no word up until that time as to the fate of their loved ones.

Williams puts in a serviceable performance as Gillars, saddled by a script that calls for an overly sympathetic portrait. Pacino, with his usual over-the-top demeanor, manages to be thoroughly entertaining and makes some good points in the role (particularly when he addresses the jury and asks them what they would have done if they were in Gillars' position). Similar to Williams, Kretchmann as Goebbels is saddled with a script that makes the German propaganda minister into the evil heavy (some charm might have fleshed out the character a bit).

The jury is still out as to whether "Axis Sally" was a true victim or dastardly collaborator. I suspect that the truth lies somewhere in between.

Better than some say
SCWC5IL11 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Many here criticize the performance of "Axis Sally." Unfortunately, these people who rushed to judgment didn't stick around for the end where the reason for her behavior becomes apparent and you realize she played the part to perfection.

My issues with the film relate to the apparently fabricated events with Goebbels and her other previous relationships with men.

Reality is good enough. Too many people watch shows like this and believe they saw what actually happened.
