Great Villanelle, plot becoming silly
Marlburian9 October 2018
I'm watching this on BBC TV, so have only got to Episode 4, but have to agree with Dubzau's comments - "Peak absurdity and beyond" - and those of PuckerFactor. Highly competent assassins rendezvousing at a station that probably has CCTV, loading their guns openly in a village, an unreliable van, a frenetic car chase through countryside, dozens of shots fired ...

But as we have seen with the Salisbury-Skripal-Novichok poisoning, professional assassins do goof, though I do wonder if in this real-life case the cack-handedness was deliberate so as to send some form of message.

So I'm reserving complete judgement to see if there's some explanation for the apparent absurdity in Episode 4 - and I haven't cheated by looking at the synopses of future episodes.

Judie Comer does make a fascinating portrayal of Villanelle, and I love her assumed innocence of a young girl, such as her pleasure when she's offered cakes by the woman at Frank Haleton's house.

Off the wall, but my favourite episode to date.
Sleepin_Dragon14 October 2018
It's true that by Part four all sense of reality seems to have all but gone, we've gone from smart, slick drama to virtually live comic book action, it has turned into a typical U.S blockbuster action adventure. Normally it wouldn't be my cup of tea, but here it seems to work brilliantly, Vilanelle has gotten crazier, darker and more detached and ruthless then ever before. Frank's chase scene was awesome, real edge of the seat viewing, really enjoyed that, but the best scene had to be the memorial for Bill, it was sincere and well performed, there was something about the look on Eve's face which made the whole scenario personal, I imagine that was a real motivating factor for her to catch Vilanelle.

Bonkers, 10/10

Sorry Baby
Prismark1026 October 2018
Eve is cut up with the death of Bill whose funeral service is held. There is some evidence that a mole is involved who betrayed her and Bill's mission in Berlin.

Villanelle is still a loose cannon. Her handler tells her that she cannot be trusted to play alone.

Villanelle has to team up with two others for a hit. The target is a member of British intelligence.

However Villanelle cannot play well with her new teammates as one of them is her ex. They also come across as a bit incompetent as an elite team of assassins.

There is a tense climax as Villanelle's target tries to run to safety. This episode shows more of its comic book roots as well as the amoral dark side of Villanelle.

Could have been brilliant

So sad to see a potentially great international hitwoman/spy drama develop by episode 4 into Carry On Spying. I was thoroughly enjoying this but episode 4 was utterly ridiculous. I can take my brain out and put it to one side for all out comedies, fantasy, SciFi, etc but when an excellent drama/thriller changes pace at a stroke and becomes farcical nonsense I am not prepared to watch any further. I take it personally that the BBC think they can suddenly take the piss out of its viewers and treat them like the brain dead watchers of the likes of Love Island, TOWIE etc. Maybe the general intellectual vacuum which now exists as a result of the lack of thought provoking television is the reason. But I just feel so angry that everything we watch now has to be reduced to the intellectual capacity of the lowest common denominator in order to sell programmes. Watch if you lack critical thinking. Avoid if you don't.

Sorry baby. I wrote a dumb episode!!
GoliathsBigBrother29 December 2021
It was a promising series up to this point, then it all went pear shaped with this completely stupid episode. Three assassins turn up in a sleepy little village waving guns around, very silly, nobody will be looking out of their window!. Why does it take three? The supposed MI5 target has all the backbone of a jellyfish, is this the calibre of operative we have in our secret services? Three assassins fire at the back of a car and manage to hit the side doors! A highly paid MI5 operative drives around in a twenty year old car, (BBC wanted something cheap to trash). Three supposedly professional assassins use an ancient unreliable people carrier as their getaway vehicle! Stopped watching the series at this point....

It just got really stupid in Episode 4
PuckerFactor3 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not expecting John le Carré style field-craft from the writers but don't insult my intelligence. When my mother is pointing out the absurdity of 3 "professional" hit-people driving around the countryside in a clapped-out van chasing a frightened cowardly traitor and all start firing full-auto into his stationary car from 30ft, you start to wonder what the writers really know about the subject they are engaged in. Why would a highly capable assassin ask another in public "where the kill is" while walking along a train station? A similar situation occurs when the cowardly traitor is running away from a chasing assassin toward Eve's car. She's gets out trying to open a gate for him while her partner (who wants to save the world) is in the back? Common sense would tell you to be in the drivers seat with the engine running ready to scream away. Instead, she's in the back ready to comfort him?...ludicrous!

This could have been a smart, quirky, espionage-type story. Instead, this series has now turned into a farcical and absurd series of stupid events.

Poorly researched
hunst6 April 2019
Anyone who has the slightest inkling of the way security services operate would recognise the crass stupidity of the writer's storyline in this episode. From Bill's (supposedly) covert trailing of Vilanelle, to the ridiculous use of three assassins (why?) in an unreliable old van, armed with OTT weaponry which they openly flaunt in a small rural village - where clearly no one looks out of their windows at strangers - before unloading dozens of rounds in country lanes. Read Soldier Spy by Tom Marcus to get an idea of how carefully controlled, real world MI6 operatives carry out surveillence. Oh and the very last thing they'd ever do is announce 'I'm with the British authorities..'

Here's where we stopped watching. And here's why:
Pimilli18 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
My wife and I were watching along and felt it was a decent show. We saw the first episode about a year ago and didn't go back to it until last Saturday. I think it my gut I knew something was off. It was a good enough show. Until this episode.

(I'll tell you why I stopped watching after this episode below)

I agree with a few of the other points some of these people made in the reviews.

A. This untraceable assassin would have been caught in 15 minutes. Fingerprints. CCTV. Openly and sloppily killing people.

B. Ok. She's a trained killer. Can fight. Weapons experience. How does Sandra Oh's weaponless and untrained Eve stay alive and prove ANY challenge to this. Not just in this episode. But in at least 3 seasons of this show.

C. aside from all the loud and obvious shooting and calamity in the town. In the day. Noisily. Obviously....

d. Why does Eve not have ANY backup? No troops? No guns? NOTHING? Why is it just Eve and her pal? This show should have been over in 6 minutes.

E. Here's where I stopped watching. The killer is chasing the man across a field with a gun. Eve gets out of the car. Her pal gets out of the driver's seat to sit in the back. There is NOBODY in the driver's seat waiting to speed off. Stupid right? Ok. But we'll stay with it. Here's where we stopped: Instead of driving off away from the trained and armed killer, EVE stops the car. Gets out. And starts to chat with the psychotic killer.. Puts her hand on her chest. Now let's say she didn't want to kill Eve. What's to stop her from walking around her. Going to the car. And putting a BULLET in the head of the two pals sitting pointlessly in the backseat? This was written by citizens from the Pleistocene Era.

Writers when writing any please ask yourselves: WHO ON EARTH WOULD DO THIS? Why are Eve and a couple bumbling pals with no guns

My wife and I looked at each other. At the same time. And that was the end of it.

It look like such a promising show then we realized the writer cared nothing about the audience's intelligence.

Peak absurdity and beyond
dubzau8 June 2018
The series started well, but this episode went beyond peak absurdity. Slapstick idiocy that might be funny if it were supposed to be funny but otherwise is an insult to viewers' intelligence, or if the IMDB average rating is to be believed, maybe not. In fact, I am now extremely sceptical of IMDB ratings because I think it is impossible that so many people could rate this so highly. The only other viewer review, at time of writing, does an admirable job of summing up this cow pat of an episode.
