The Houses October Built 2: A real letdown
Platypuschow24 May 2018
Though the first movie was hardly spectacular it was original and certainly memorable. It told the story of a group of friends who went on a road trip to various "Halloween horror houses". Basically horror attractions, which really do exist and I find fascinating.

Their adventure ended badly last time but here they have picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and are doing it again.

Now last time it was a successful slow build, this time it's a very slow build with no real payoff. What I mean by that is the movie is presented in a documentary form and remains like that for 9/10 of the film so very little actually happens. If you're interested in these horror haunts however you'll have a blast as they are the real thing including the Zombie Pub Crawl and Zombie Run which are annual events.

The movie does have a fantastic twist but I think it was handled very poorly. Top that off with the distinct lack of actual movie content and I found this to be a huge let down. I went in with expectations and they simply weren't met.

Once again it has a real charm and is very original, but just doesn't entertain like it should have. I'd love to see a third and final part to meet its potential and finish the story.

The Good:

Great idea

Very original

The Bad:

Some weird cinematography choices

The behaviour of the characters is simply not believable

More a faux documentary than an actual movie

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

I'd love to do a roadtrip of these things!

Not as good as the first
BayouBabylon23 September 2017
Unlike a lot of horror fans, I liked the first The Houses October Built. I liked seeing the backwoods, indie haunts and I thought it was a creative idea to weave a plot into what was, basically, just a Haunted House Road Trip.

This one just seems like a way for the filmmakers to get paid to go on another Haunted House road trip, only with a much more flimsy and boring plot.

Unfortunately, the places they visit are even more boring than in the first film because of a very weak premise involving one of the main characters. The events look fun enough, but far from scary, even in person, much less on film.

I gave this movie 4 stars because I like seeing indie haunts from across the country. Also, in general, I like the premise of seeking the extreme, or seeking forbidden knowledge, then being rewarded with more than you bargained for.

May contain slight spoilers..

Warning: Spoilers
I really dug "The houses October Built." I can get down with the ff conceit, and it was especially well done there. The whole idea was original, people going to haunted houses and looking for more extreme haunts and biting off more than they can chew.. But this movie pretty much undoes all the magic of the first.. Sorry but I don't think it's really any spoiler to say that every single cast member from the first is in the sequel, and while the given reason makes sense, and also it was kinda neat (for about 5 seconds) to watch the whole gang reunited, there was really no new ground tread here to warrant undoing the ending of the original to make this sequel..

Sure there were a few creepy parts but those mostly stem from the appearances of familiar faces from the first film. It just didn't have the same feeling or energy as the first.. Yet they were doing almost the same thing again.. Lastly I just felt that the big "twist" wasn't worth doing to the overall story line but I won't ruin it for those who do want to watch. I guess it was worth watching, I didn't absolutely hate it.. But I won't be re-watching, where adversely I have re-watched the first THOB a few times.. Sorry guys.. This cow's been milked dry, onto new ideas.

Really quite terrible unfortunately
jtindahouse4 December 2017
The first 'The Houses October Built' blew me away back in 2014. I went in with almost zero expectations and left astonished by how good it was. Did I have my hopes up for the sequel being able to live up to that same level? No, they almost never do after all particularly in the horror genre. Did I hope for more quality than I got though? Absolutely, this was bordering on one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. Does it detract from what the original put forward? Unfortunately yes it does in a big way.

By about the 1 hour 15 minute mark I thought to myself: has anything actually happened yet? The answer was no. Sure we had seen some fun haunted houses (or hay rides apparently) and there was the weirdly edited shots of the clown masked guy following them, however this felt more like a documentary to that point than anything else. It was filler, plain and simple. It's absolutely unacceptable for a horror movie to run for an hour and 40 minutes with that little happening in the opening 75 minutes. No excuse for that whatsoever.

Then the big final sequence (or the pay off if you wish to call it that) begins and I think to myself: this better bloody be worth it. Well let me assure you it wasn't. It was poorly done, predictable and thought it was a hell of a lot smarter than it actually was. The editing was also very poor in that final sequence. Possibly the best done scene in the entire film was the very final one with the sign, however that had basically nothing to do with the film, so bravo. Please stay away from this film. Not only is it terrible, there's a very good chance it will ruin the original for you too. Yuck.

THOB2 buried the franchise
djsth1321 January 2018
Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the first movie so much that I have seen it 3 times. Actually I am a big fan of haunted houses-found footage-halloween movies like Hellhouse LLC etc. But this one...omfg. This one was a disaster...same story to the detail, characters were thin and you didn't feel any sympathy for them like in the prequel, acting was terrible, payed too much attention to the attractions and the actual plot start 80mins into the movie. Also the ending was terrible and the drone parts ridiculous. I didn't ever expect to say it for a movie of this kind but I wasted 105 minutes of my life.

Terrible
pensacolacomputer22 September 2017
I really liked the first one but this one is crap in comparison.

No scares, AT ALL, unless maybe you are 10, home alone with it storming outside and all the lights out, even then I doubt it.

Look at some of my other recommendations by clicking on my username and navigating to my horror movie ratings.

This one is a PASS for sure.

I thought the ending was a great plot twist. I really don't get all the negative reviews. It had me fooled. I never saw that coming.

Unnecessary Sequel
johnnyutah3123 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

About 3 years ago when I saw the first film I was pleasantly surprised on how effective it was and since then I've seen it quite a few times. So naturally I was excited for this sequel. Sadly though, everything that made the first film appealing is lost here and in a lot of ways it plays out almost exactly the same but without all the charm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

To start, the events of the first film are almost made totally irrelevant here and in turn begins this new tale in a rather distasteful way. The group of pals you as the viewer traveled along with from the first film somehow are less likable here thus making their journey more of a drag. And if you enjoyed seeing all the haunted house locations they visited in the first film, as I did, then in this sequel you'll get about 1 hour and 10 mins of nothing but visiting such places. Along with an escape room and a zombie race. Bad thing is though that for that amount of time there's no story developing at all really.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

For the last maybe 20 mins you'll get to see things unfold but unfortunately it's all rather goofy and uninteresting. I wanted to like this movie, I did, but honestly it really didn't let me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Definitely Not as Good as The First
r3volution1125 September 2017
My rating for the first: 7/10. This one I'd give 5.5/10 if I could.

Without going into the plot I feel like they tried too hard to get into character development while utilizing newer technologies. Neither of which help the story, actually making it worse.

I agree with others that it's not as scary, however, I still like it a bit because it's the same actors. That said I couldn't, in good standing, recommend it to someone else.

Gave it a shot hoping it might be better than the first film. Nope.
frankblack-799613 November 2020
So the 5 stupidest friends on earth are back for more. After what happened to them in the first film you would think they learned a tiny tiny bit of what not to do. They actually got dumber in this film. The absolute stupidity is shocking. Even for a horror film it is beyond utter idiocy. Just don't pay to watch this. I will make sure to avoid anything this director does in the future.

flyersicem-1384523 June 2018
With all the nonsense movies that are made in today's world I'm surprised of all the negative reviews. This movie is original and just like the first one enjoyable. Most of the negative reviews I guarantee come from people who enjoy seeing Dwayne the rock Johnson in every half ass Hollywood movie. Original concept movies like these should be praised just like every movie made by Quinten Tarantino. If everyone was on board with this well, the world will be a better place!

Warning: Spoilers
The opening captures the end of the first film were our crew gained fame by being buried alive and it being televised. They now get paid to come to haunted houses as they seek out places, with much of the filming done in Minnesota. Brandy (Brandy Schaefer) balks at the whole thing after being traumatized, but eventually agrees. This time the place is "Hellbent" that they seek.

Mostly hand held camera. I enjoyed this film more than the first feature. I liked the filming in Minnesota.

i rarely ever agree with bad comments based on reviewing a movie
joey32197827 September 2017
But i could not agree more. It took me 3 days to watch this movie. I am pretty sure someone forgot to tell them to keep the people watching the movie, INTERESTED in watching the damn movie. At least blair witch 2 went off course when making their sequel. These morons basically put no creativity into the sequel they made what so ever. All they did was make a movie that won't, at least should not get a part 3

Same story...wasn't impressed the first time around.
iamhumbleiamvain22 September 2017
When i heard the idea for the first "film" I was blown away by it, unfortunately the movie i wrote in my head in the five minutes after seeing the trailer was better than both "films combined. The potential they had could of delivered us the best found footage film since cloverfield. To try and cash in on the same pathetic idea again is an insult to me and should be to you too. PEACE

An awful, boring, nonsensical, chore of a movie.
ashenedict7 June 2020
This "movie" was such a poorly shot, written, directed, and thought out production that it actually made me like the first one less. It robbed the first film of any form of mystery, through the use of unnecessary explanation for elements from the first, and, with the explanations, added in "twists" that just served to make the movie a plotless slog. Do not watch this film. Do not talk about this film. Don't even read this review. It gave me an acute pain in my left eye, and I'm fairly certain it took my remote so I was unable to turn it off. Awful.

Waste of time
awill11224 October 2018
I really enjoyed the first one which was creepy and very unsettling. The sequel unfortunately is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. An entire hour goes by with absolutely nothing happening. There's a 10 minute scene of a hot dog eating contest at a festival - WHY?! It serves no purpose. The "climax" had very little suspense. Just really bad

With friends like these...
selfdestructo12 April 2022
I had really mixed feelings about the 2014 Houses October Built. I thought it succeeded exceedingly well for the most part, as a found footage film, but I was let down by how contrived and staged the final act was.

Part 2 is pretty much more of the same structure, yet comes off a bit different. Certainly has a stronger final act, more clever, more conclusive. First thing I noticed on the menu screen was that the entire cast was still alive. I'm like, what the? The semi-cliffhanger of the first one does get an explanation of what transpired.

I think they totally ditched the concept of being a found footage movie, though there is a lot of hand-held stuff here, too. I also had the distinct feeling everyone was adhering to a script, rather than the natural banter between buddies I got off part 1. Seemed like they had more of a budget, thanks in part by the plethora of aerial shots (as well as obvious sponsors).

The plot is essentially the same, where they go check out extreme haunts (these all seemed to be more extreme than the ones in part 1). Only now, they are celebrities and get paid for reviews. I enjoyed seeing them getting treated like celebrities at some of these haunts. Brandy ("Coffin Girl") wants nothing to do with it anymore, after being traumatized by The Blue Skeleton. I think she is persuaded by the money.

Much of this film is just them going through the haunted houses, but there were a few diversions to offer a little variety. My favorite, and one I would actually do, is the Zombie Run. You have to run through this huge post-apocalyptic setting, avoiding zombies all the way, and finish with 2 flags intact. That seemed more fun to me than weirdos invading my personal space.

The final act, just like the previous 2 movies is a fake haunt. Only, they thought this one through. How did they end up in NC? Who/what is Hellbent? What's with the skeleton following them around? This ending offers some twists, turns, and surprises. Actually, a pretty gratifying conclusion.

Callam_1023 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not worthy of a one star, 0* is my true vote but IMDb won't let me do that.

Where to start with this piece of trash. I was actually looking forward to this so i decided to watch it last night, fell asleep about half an hour in, decided to come back to it tonight, literally didn't interest me a single bit, was browsing the web, messaging my girlfriend, playing an online casino thing, anything to drown that movie out. I got 52 minutes in before i said forget it i ain't wasting any more time on this . Everyone who had any part of this abomination should leave the industry completely. I've seen bad horror movies, but at least they have something going for it. This movie is as bland as water, in fact i'd rather sit and watch a cup of water for 2 hours than this garbage. People are delusional to have made this a 4.6*. One of the worst movies i've ever seen, so boring, uninteresting, uninspired. It's a cluster of annoying and disappointing, stay away. Stay well away. Consider this me doing you favour

Slightly flawed but still enjoyable sequel
kannibalcorpsegrinder13 December 2017
Having survived their previous encounter, the group goes out once again to document haunted houses in order to deal with the trauma only for signs of their previous tortures to show up and get drawn into another terrifying battle with the deranged psychopaths

On the whole, this was quite the decent and enjoyable follow-up. One of the better aspects of this one is the way in which this one goes for a slightly more normalized take on the haunted houses they tour. The first half of this one features them touring the different attractions, from the problem-solving experience that features an intriguing experience, the later showing in the house with all the distorted walls and decorations which has a full-on psychedelic experience and the interactive attraction with the bleeding victims has quite a lot of fun to it with the different activities featured throughout. Their experience on the hayride has some more fun to be had with the different interactions featured here, while the highlight is the scenes of them at the pub-crawl which features the walk-through of the festival to the different zombies around them and the big food-eating contest that has a fun sense about it. That is the main part of this one, where it has plenty of fun with them in the different attractions looking at the creepy settings and decorations as well as the objectives required for those different rides. The antics in the final house, where it turns out to be about the group getting trapped with the deranged settings once again manages to have an eerie air to it as it forces a repetition of the setup from last time while adding some terrifying encounters that are exceptionally graphic. While these make it work, this one has some pretty big flaws present. The most egregious effort here is the fact that this one just doesn't seem in the slightest bit interested in getting them to the main house this time as their exploits are built more on exploring the different houses which takes up a ton of time throughout here. It doesn't have much to do with them in the house at all and doesn't even introduce the tormentors until well over an hour has played out which doesn't really generate the kind of scares consistent with the pacing for much of the overall running time. That lack of interaction makes them seem far less interesting this time around as it doesn't really provide this one with the main threat this time around and tends to make it feel duller than anything as it plays more like watching home videos of people on these rides rather than anything else which is far less interesting. That also makes what happens at the end all the more confusing since none of it really matters at all and their actions toward the group make no sense as it just comes off like torture with no buildup or purpose and really defeats the purpose of their actions. That, in a sense, really lowers this one significantly.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

The Blue Skeleton Returns!
parry_na28 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Anything to get a scare, right?" It must have been a challenge to go about a sequel to a film in which the original cast all appeared to die, but to its credit, 'The Houses October Built 2' – from here on in, THOB2 - actually begins as the earlier instalment ended – with the group of haunted house 'enthusiasts' being buried alive. Pretty soon, the 'five thrill seekers' are free once more.

Like the earlier production, this plays with the idea of found footage, in that it cheats with the concept by apparently including scenes that would have been impossible for the characters to film – but when it helps the flow and heightens the chaotic sense of the grotesque brutality to this extent, it is forgivable.

Like the Blair Witch trilogy before it, THOB2 takes the events from the previous movie and treats them as reality; the YouTube exploits of Zack, Mikey, Bobbie and Jeff have made headline news – and made a star out of the sole female of the group Brandy (Brandy Schaefer). Problem is, this new fame pushes the others to go further into the world of haunted houses and realistic funfair demons than ever before – and Brandy, or 'Coffin Girl' who has attracted 24 million YouTube hits, assuredly wants no part of it. I don't like the way the boys cajole Brandy into the gang again, even considering the pressure they are under from their audience. Before, the group were extreme but likable; now, that appeal has been diminished, although their recklessness proves to be entirely in character. Also, it would be unrealistic if at least one of the gang wasn't reticent about coming for another journey. To help to understand why people enter into this kind of macabre exhibitionism, Brandy meets Dr Margee Kerr, who engages with scary things to help her 'grow'. It wouldn't convince me! Other than that, it is business 'as unusual', as they traverse haunted houses and extreme Halloween attractions much as before. Their travelogue becomes a world where every face is horrifying, around every corner is a new reason to shudder, and fairground horrors become their life. The 'bigger and better' scares (and use of a drone to film them) open things up in the way sequels often strive for, but in turn, events lose some of the grimy intimacy of the first film. The enigmatic Blue Skeleton organisation is still trailing the gang, for reasons that are never clearly stated, other than their notoriety. Throughout, the haunted house network encourages them to 'seek out Hellbent' (a phrase which is more profound than they imagine) as an example of the most extreme experience you can get. Inevitably, when they arrive there, things are not as they seem … I thought this was terrific. I'm not sure it topped the weirdness of the first, but Director Bobby Roe certainly tapped into the same vein. My favourite character from the first, the jerky, awful Doll Girl is here briefly and this time there are others like her. As sequels go, this is a good one. But I can't see – now that the main characters have been exposed in such a way – how there can be any more instalments.

For a sequel, not bad.
melk08155 July 2020
I'm normally skeptical about sequels, but this one pleasantly surprised me. It's a rarity to like the sequel a bit more then the original, but I think The Houses October Built 2 gives the original a run for its money. I enjoyed that the entire cast returned. The characters are pretty easy to like. The story was interesting as well. I thought it was a well written sequel and quite a gem.

TRAUMATIZING MY ALREADY TRAUMATIZED GIRLFRIEND PRANK!!!!(GONE WRONG)
stefankrs23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is bad on so many levels. First off, it ruins the first movie's ending of them being buried alive, just somehow they were saved. The movie really did not need a sequel but of course it just had to be done. This movie is pretty much just a bunch of friends who are recording their experience and trip to haunted houses, they decide to bring a traumatized friend of theirs who did not want to go due to her being literally buried alive and left for dead last time. They go to haunted houses, then a familiar looking group of people with the same mask as the ones who buried them alive appear. They get kidnapped and tortured and the girl is scared to death. But guess what it turns out it was a prank. The end. Terrible movie never watch 1/10.

What a piece of crap
toddsabby24 September 2017
This has to be the worst sequel to a movie of all time. I started this account so I could comment on how bad this movie is. I enjoyed the first one. The follow up is a boring piece of crap. Do not waste any time watching it. Horrible. Horrible. How this production was even given money to be made is beyond me.
