A welcome return, Great opening episode.

It seems an age since the wonderfully charismatic Vera was on our screens, so glad to see her back. Vera and Haydn are called in when a charred body is found in an incinerator at an abattoir. The body turns out to be a Policeman, Vera faces corruption and deceit from those who should know better. The last series was superb, and that quality has obviously carried through here, this was superb from start to finish. The story was loaded with intrigue without being overly complicated, some great moments including the conclusion and Vera's banter with the solicitor, and a few nice touches of humour throughout, it is plain to see that Blethyn and Doughty get on well, they are superb together. The guest cast were excellent, I especially enjoyed Carolyn Pickles, she's such a strong actress. Fabulous location work as always it looked superb. Sunday evenings were meant for Vera.

Blood and Bone

Old school crumpled detective Vera returns for its eighth series. DCI Vera Stanhope is called into action when a charred body is found in an abattoir incinerator. The abattoir owner insists that the body is not a staff member and the death has nothing to do with his company. Maybe the haulage company who delivered the carcasses might have some involvement.

The case takes a serious turn when the body is identified of a policeman, 38 years in the force who was on the eve of his retirement.

The story had a labyrinth plot with unreliable suspects, a lot of them with something to hide. The abattoir owner who once received a suspended sentence some years ago, people at the haulage firm appear to be involved in money laundering. There are also issues regarding the victim. Was he too honest or too crooked?

It was enjoyable but rather hokey at the same time. I really found it hard to believe that a policeman would serve 38 years on the force and still be bitter that he has to go. The police officers I have known take their pension as soon as they could unless they are of an extremely high rank.

I also expect better technical advice for a crime series. Barristers turn up to represent their client's in court not attend at the police station. Solicitors do the legwork at the police station and if you have a complain about them, you do not go to the Bar Council.

From Argentina
This episode was too long and boring.

Vera is looking more and more like Columbo every year, but more ironic than he was.

An hour episode would be the ideal for me.

Begins at 10 pm?

Well,at 11 pm you know who did it and the series is over until next week (like "Father Brown") but this isn't the case.

There are plenty of twits so to the episode can last 90 minutes.

Totally unnecessary.

I hope next episode will be more interesting and shorter.
