Never Quite Comes Together
larrys326 August 2019
Normally, this type of film with quirky characters and subtle humor set in a small Irish town would be right up my alley. However, this dramedy never really came together, as I had hoped it would, into a really engaging movie, although it did have its amusing and poignant moments.

Liam O Mochain wrote and directed the film, and also stars as Daniel who has just been employed in the Lost & Found, at the local train station. Thus, the movie will have various interconnected stories of those people he knows or meets at the station, plus the people and places in the small Irish town which surrounds it.

Overall, although it had its moments a good part of this movie just fell flat, as I see it.

mostly good... a bit choppy.

Written, directed, and starring the same person... uh.oh.... not always a good sign. In this case, it's liam mochain. He also wrote, directed, and starred in W. C.... water closet. "Lost and found" starts at a lost and found department at a train station in ireland. We meet the people who come and go, for various reasons. Several short tales are all connected by the people, as they travel. Some of the stories are interesting and realistic. Some are not. And time seems to move forward and backward, so it's a little tricky to keep track of what's going on. On the plus side, there were some fun surprises along the way. Good concept, mostly good story. The script or direction just needed some polishing up to make it a more solid story. The time jumps got to be more confusing than it needed to be.

Some smiles along the way, but not polished or rewarding.

Warning: Spoilers
Multiple stories interweaving is a compelling trope, and a cheap one to shoot, and that shows. It's mostly technically perfectly competent, with some awkward edits at cutaways, but lighting, framing, sound, grade, etc no issues. It's production on easy mode in many ways, as you can produce a lot of the stories separately which allows you more flexibility than a monolithic feature shoot. It makes good use of the budget, and the budget is used effectively this way.

The budget constraints meant things like "the wedding venue that you can only get 2 years ahead" doesn't live up to the conceit, and it feels a bit lumpy for that. "Poland" obviously wasn't, but could have been set up with stock library for instance.

When done right, you get "Love, Actually" which is a masterclass in the overlapping story style. But that's Richard Curtis, he's fundable and experienced, and it shows (if mawkish!). Things are set up and pay off, there's even a contrived but compelling top and tail airport arrivals scene which is clearly an afterthought to create a symmetry, and that's what you get with a bigger, more experienced team.

Where this film seems to differ is that the script doesn't make anything of the interconnections, they're just incidental, and that means lacking an overall story arc (which is always the risk with the model). The film starts in one direction with a "Lost and Found" shed and ends with a wedding for the same character (apparently also the writer/director) so why not set that arc up early? Why not use the scenes along the way to contribute giving the protagonist some challenges to grow through? The wedding ring being brought into the L&F was the perfect excuse. The treasure/bracelet story could have gone somewhere and found an old ring from the protagonist's great grandparent. The (multiple) deaths could have been counterpoint against the baby brought in story from the first setup, even a birth motif which was already set up but never used or paid off...

In the end 3* and they're mostly for effort, I wish I could give more, but ultimately a deeply unsatisfying film. It felt like 7 shorts nailed together with a limited cast, not what was promised.

Charming little movie
cowgoesmoo10 June 2019
The first reviewer said he stopped watching after 14 minutes. Too bad he didn't stick with the whole thing to give it a chance. The opening minutes concern Daniel, who takes a job in a train station's Lost and Found department. Various people come in who have lost/found things. What follows thereafter is a series of several shorts with Daniel the one constant theme in all of them. Some events go forwards and backwards in time. Events/objects/people that seemed mundane early on acquire meaning later as the stories unfold. There are many little "Aha!" moments sprinkled throughout. I rather enjoyed it.

Lovely, Light on the Soul
Sasha_Lauren2 November 2019
Lost & Found, a touching, whimsical comedy from Irish writer/director/actor Liam O Mochain, is light on the soul.

The film is comprised of seven interconnected stories that begin in a Lost and Found office of an Irish train station. The theme of the stories seems to be that we are always losing, looking for, and finding things, ideas, opportunities, and relationships in life.

The stories are set in a cozy, surprising world that is at times unfair; the film floated along awash with a dry Irish humor and humanity; it felt as though I was IN this small Irish town with these characters who pop off the screen as real people with flaws splattered on their sleeves. Spending time with them was a bright delight.

One after another, the titles of the seven vignettes showed creatively up on screen accompanied by quirky and spirited music and gave me a content sense that I was going to enjoy them... and I did.

1. Lost and Found 2. Ticket to Somewhere 3. The Proposal 4. The Tent 5. The Will 6. Grand Opening 7. The Wedding

The film left me wanting more, but rolled gently to it's destination smoothly and perfectly on time.
