An excellent season finale
jkaki30 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Some developments were a little predictable, while others were unexpected. The combination of Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin, and the things they do on behalf of the country, continue to keep me on the edge of my seat. I expected but was pleased by Pres. Keanes' response near the end-were that all our leaders could be so thoughtful and noble.

Another commentator has complained that the ending trivializes and misrepresents Carrie's disorder, but I think he misunderstands the story of the seven months she was in Russian captivity. Her bipolar disorder would have been one factor leading up to the way she reacted at the end of the episode. Even a person with no mental disorder kept captive by vindictive agents of the FSB, the successor to the KGB, after undergoing repeated attempts to force them to give a false confession, would have had various mental and emotional issues when finally being released to U.S. officials.

Great when there is action
AllanBarstard2 May 2018
High quality storyline. Superb acting.

The show is so good when they're out in the field. Hopefully there is less glorification of the Oval Office next series.

Good follow-up to season 6

Once again the series pivots from Islamist terrorism to Russian interference in American politics, and they did a great job with it.

An honest review.

Warning: Spoilers
I got so emotional towards the climax of this season. I have seen many comments from people that the finale misrepresented mental illness. But as someone suffering from bipolar taking Lithium, I know how difficult it gets when you're off your meds for even one single day. It feels like everything's going haywire. And for living in captivity for seven long months without the meds, I can't imagine what Carrie went through. Kudos to the writer and Linka Glatter. And of course Claire Danes for nailing the performance as always!

Congratulations to Claire. Warning: Spoilers
I am very impressed with Claire Danes last minute act. It is so good, my deepest admiration for her skills as an actress. I am so worried about Carrie, , it seems so real that she is lost, but I know we have the promise of a new season, so... I hope that the show stays real and don't give her just a recovery pill, and that's it, like new. I can imagine a long trip to sanity if there is one. I like that Saul looks really worried. It was a excellent finale for the season.

S7: Solid season throughout
bob the moo5 June 2018
It is true that one of the main characters dropping out at the end of last season did suggest a bit loss, however the season was decent enough that I continue to come back to Homeland. It is pretty impressive in a couple of ways. Firstly it is good to be reminded how the show started - a bit of a gimmick in the narrative perhaps, and a main character with limited stuff you could do with him. It used this and moved past this well. It is also impressive that Carrie's mental challenges did not get old. At times it does feel like it is looking for a reason to be on, but mostly it produces good television.

This is the case with the seventh season; in that it is good television, albeit not appointment television (a phrase that reveals my age a bit). The timely nature of it adds some value to the plotting; a president on the defensive, a foreign power trying to influence and undermine, an increasing political polarization etc. The show has always felt like it is managing to be a small step ahead of headlines and it does it again here. With this as the base, it turns in a fairly decent plot which mostly works. Some threads feel like tidying up from previous seasons, but mostly it fits together and moves forward as a whole. The ending of the season is a bit muted but it works.

The thing that this season does better is to blend in Carrie as a person. In the past the show has done this badly (like the sudden change of pace at the end of S4) or integrated it into the plot as a plot device. In this case though it feels like it stands on its own, and merges into the season rather than feeling like the season happens to this aspect of her life. This makes Carrie a difficult character again this season, but this is part of her appeal and Danes works that well.

All told, it is another solid season which holds together well; although truth be told I'm fine with the idea that S8 is the chance to bring it all to a close.

This is how the United States should be run!
Leslie-phillips730 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I rarely write reviews. This is an exception. The script is masterful! This, in my opinion is how the United States is administered in real time. It is truly a disaster for the people of this great country. I was moved to tears by Elizabeth Keane's speech and resignation. If only this were as it is?

Top marks to Claire Daines and Mandy Patinkin

With regard to "Carries" condition I am not an authority on mental health and I appreciate other reviewers comments. However, I can accept the "poetic licence" to get the message across.

How is it that America can produce such quality "entertainment", yet it's affairs in real world politics is an absolute disaster. It only goes to demonstrate that the people have allowed their government to be hijacked. There is no accountability.

There are no "real" people in the White House.

Wake up America!

You have been duped! Question everything.

Best Homeland season ever.
moviewatcherCA5 July 2019
The acting is top notch across the boards. Claire Daines is outstanding in many of this season's episodes. The writing is top notch. Various plot surprises come into play, especially in the last two episodes. If you have followed Homeland all along I predict you will find this season very satisfying. It was for me.

Completely misportrays mental illness
MiketheWhistle30 April 2018
Over the run of the series they've stretched Carie's bipolar disorder from reality, but they completely broke any bond to the truth in this episode and thereby destroying millions of people with mental illness. If Carie had bipolar and went the months they talk about without her medication, she would not go crazy.Bipolar is not schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders where going without medication would have such an effect. It's a shame that such an otherwise great episode that brings what today's politics are and can anything ever be done to bring our country together be soiled for political drama.

Satisfactory episode
dierregi14 May 2021
Apt ending to a season that followed a different scenario from the usual Middle-Eastern terrorist menace. Started with an unemployed and stressed Carrie, trying to investigate a US internal crises and ended with a full-fledged international conspiracy and the much-maligned President showing a softer side.

Definitely more enjoyable than the previous season. Carrie's issues were not overplayed, but are still present to add some suspence about the next and final season.

The show needs more excitement
rhnickles18 December 2018
For years it was back to back excitement and drama, but now it seems to just throw anything in the story to fill up the hour.

I am hoping it gets better. This was my favorite show but now I am getting worried it might crash and burn.

There is an awful lot of untranslated Russian dialogue this season. I strongly oppose the show's refusal to use subtitles.

Contrivance / deus ex machina problems ruin season finale
tp-9633530 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Don't you hate when a villain has the hero dead to rights and then decides to make a speech? Or drop his gun to fight hand-to-hand? If you do, then perhaps you had some questions during the escape from Moscow:

1 Why would the Russians allow Saul (and Russian spy Simone) to get off the ground and fly for hours in Russian airspace, until they confirmed Simone's whereabouts? If this was remotely plausible, the Russians would have gotten everyone out of the van and confirmed their identities. And then let the Americans go on their way. Would the acting American president have any moral authority to detain the Russian embassador at that point?

2 How about the Russian diplomat stopping the van with Saul and the poorly disguised Simone and then stepping away to take a phone call with no one else's assistance. The only way it could have been funnier is if he answered it and it was his mother calling. "Mother, I'm really busy right now! Nyet! I call you back!"

3 How about the portrayal of Republican Senator Paley who's immediately convicted and the President spitting on him? Played like a superhero movie. Those dumb evil Russian-loving Republicans! They're so dumb they would probably try to give the Russians a plastic reset button to repair Russian relations. Er... wait...

Anyway, if you haven't seen this episode, I recommend you just wait til next season. The producers are promising to get out of the US politics and go back to terrorism - and perhaps come back to reality.

This episode puts is the worst of all the Show
iliap-3091130 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Homeland" did catch from the beginning with it's dedication to the details and having pretty much objective view on things, both American and worldwide politics.

It made the viewer believe what had took place in Libya, Iran, and other countries.

Until this episode was screened. It a disaster. Absolutly no attantion to the details. Guys, really... Budapest look nothing like Moscow. Car plates look nothing like car plates in Russia, and there are no mountains in Moscow., For some reason the policemen and army people in Russia wear AMERICAN uniform., EU flag on GRU building?

On top of that, the acts are childish and non-reasonable. Mathison enters a top secret room in the center of "Moscow" through window? Really... It's like I have just watched a junky action movie from 90's.

Guys... really... spoiled the whole taste by the end of the season.

Paean to the People
bobcobb3011 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It was not the least eventful Homeland finale the show has done, but it is up there.

We didn't get a real resolution to the Russia stuff, we just an uneventful tradeoff of prisoners at the end.

This politically charged season had its highs and lows, but trying to give retribution to Keane was ridiculous. She wanted the General killed, it doesn't matter if she wasn't responsible for it happening, so we should not forgive her.

Not bad for a finale
Abdulxoxo18 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Not exactly an exciting finale but nevertheless it's still suspenseful, and intense episode despite lack of action, the Saul situation with the Russian soldiers and Carrie's capture were the highlight of the episode. Carrie could simply have avoided being captured, if she had took off her wig and blended with the crowd, why didn't she? and Saul and co would still have gotten away.

President keane stepping down came out of nowhere, it negate everything she said and did the entire time she's president, moreover, she made a "promise" to Carrie's team that she'll do "anything in her power" to bring Carrie home but moments later she resigned?

Anyway, Carrie got released seven months later in some kinda prisoner exchange, and she's unstable as ever. Her reaction at the end with Saul was totally believable considering she was held in Russian prison for an extended amount of time without her medications. From the look of things, we're not done with crazy Carrie, I think it's going to overlap to the next season.

I hope the next season will be pulsating and be in a different location! 'cause this season while it's good, there weren't that memorable moments or episode, and it's not on any level as the rest of the previous seasons.

Am I missing something or are the stakes super low to nonexistent?
bccpldt8 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A key issue that wouldn't have been forgotten is that this president locked herself into her office and ordered the imprisonments, with no due process, of around 200 Americans. So while I was watching people risk their lives frantically trying to find proof of a Russian plot I was thinking - maybe she needs to go anyway.

I mean, even if it's a Russian plot, it's her reaction and consequent decisions that determine her fitness for office.

Rounding up Americans and locking them up without due process! Not to get political but think about the actual reasons for past impeachments of presidents. The closest we've come to removing a president was Nixon who resigned before Congress could remove him. That was for covering up a nighttime break-in into Democrat Party offices.

The last two episodes (particularly the final one) was so full of holes that they negated all the excitement and tension of what went before. So disappointing.

Homeland season 7
m-fallon673 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This not for just this episode, but the whole season 7. In one word- disappointing. Ever since the show's main character, Brodie,(Damien Lewis) was killed off, a few seasons back, the show has been slowly getting less appealing, every season. This season has been about Carrie's struggle with her responsibility as a parent to her daughter, and her obsession of stopping all threats to the United States. The show, this season has lost It's balance too. Having woven into the plot, a ultra right wing character made to sound like the real life Alex Jones, complete with government conspiracies , and turning out to be a coward in the end. What is really disturbing, was a Ruby Ridge type shooting of a young boy and his dog, which is exactly what happened at the actual Ruby Ridge incident. All the characters in the siege at the house were stereotypically portrayed as ultra right wing white male militia gun nuts, and separatists. The Russian and American conspiracy to bring down President Keane, was interesting, but had a silly unbelievable ending, that made no sense. The main characters played by Clair Daines, and Mandy Patinkin, were good, but the writing and the plot line, took away from their otherwise fine performance. I think the only thing that will save this show next season, is to go back to more realistic scenarios, involving threats from middle eastern terrorists. At least that would be more believable.

Deeply flawed series
johnfpfallon16 May 2020
Having been a fan of previous series; (for their credibility of story and action; as well as the portrayal of Americans as not always being ultra-good): This series spiraled out of control from early on. The lack of credible actions toward the end of the series is a major problem for the quality of the overall programme. Some of the scenes, events and outcomes were frankly ludicrous and unbelievable. By the end the star-spangled rhetoric was nauseating. I don't blame the directors or actors; they maintained their quality of performance throughout. I blame the writers. They ruined this. A real shame. The writers should be ashamed.

Misportrayal of mental illness
freethemountain11 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Actually, severe cases of bipolar disorder can result in psychosis. Research indicates that bipolar and schizophrenia are related. There is also a schizoaffective disorder, a combination of schizophrenia and a mood disorder. Regardless of how mental illness is portrayed otherwise in Homeland, the psychosis bit is correct.

Anyways... So, I agree with what others have said about the finale of this season being underwhelming. Too much 'OK USA' and cramming in every storyline in as little time as possible. Wouldn't it be a good cliffhanger to end with a few glimpses of Carrie in her cell, concluding with a horrible scream as her situation and illness take a hold of her?

More obvious mistakes by the writers
sashimg9 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get how the writers can be so good at times yet make bonehead mistakes.

1. They get away in the Mercedes and don't even switch cars? Any car but the one they drove off in, just grab a civilian's car.

2. Carrie is trying to hide, they're looking for Simone yet she doesn't remove her wig? She would've been a ghost by simply doing that!

3. The president decides to resign because half of the nation doesn't trust her. First, that's true of every president. Second, she JUST got her reputation back when they proved that the Russians were behind everything! Not gonna give it a month or so and see if you've gained their trust back?

4. Carrie no longer needed meds, she had learned to do without them by exercising, meditating etc. She could've done that while she was a prisoner but instead the writers forgot they wrote that. I can see her being a bit traumatized, but she's a spy and she had ways to cope without medication. They went overboard with the ending.

Just silly, I try not to nitpick, and suspend disbelief but these are unnecessary mistakes, they could be having just as great episodes without so many of these glaring issues. It's like watching 24, but with that show it wasn't supposed to be believable, it was more of a fantasy. I'll try to do it for next season though haha.
