The magazine editor Jules Hunter disappears along with her toddler daughter. Her husband Nick receives a phone call where she is calling for help, and reports her supposed kidnapping to the police. Nick is a wealthy business executive, but he has a violent streak, and the police discover that he has been lying to his business associates and to his mistress about his recent activities. He is initially suspected of killing his wife, but Olivia discovers that Jules is simply hiding from her abusive husband. Retired ADA Alexandra Cabot has helped Jules and several other women to escape their abusers, often using illegal methods. Olivia confronts Alexandra, who explains that she has lost faith in the ability of the legal system to protect the victims of abuse. Olivia reveals the whereabouts of Jules, and is certain that the custody of the daughter can be decided at a family court. Jules is soon killed in a vehicle-ramming attack, with indications that she was killed by a contract killer. Nick gains custody over their daughter, and Alexandra feels that this proves her point about the defective legal system. She parts ways with Olivia, feeling that she can no longer work with her long-time friend.
