Series 7 rounds off in style.
Sleepin_Dragon22 February 2018
After Eight episodes it's time to wave goodbye to the sunshine, and the charms of Death in Paradise for another year. Happily, this series rounds off with one of the best offerings from this series. The main characters can't help but put a smile on your face, and this week was no exception. An excellent story line, clever, and a little deeper then is usually the case, and finally we get some involvement from The Commissioner, nice to see Don Warrington having a more active role, instead of just barking orders, he had a more hands on role. A really strong guest cast, Clint Dyer was excellent as Leon Laroche, a really strong performance. Great to see Dwayne's father return, and the pair had some nice scenes.

Overall I think Ardal's first full series at the helm has been a success, he's quickly settled into the roe, and everything feels as it should do. The writing in quite a few episodes has been strong, and we've had some excellent guest performances. The viewing figures confirm that people have stuck with it, which is wonderful, for some of us it's the only time in February we get to see the sun. Roll on Series Eight. 9/10

Leaving "Murder on the Day of the Dead" behind!
harrykivi13 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The seventh season has not the most impressive with only "The Day of the Dead" being something to write home about. " Melodies of Murder" however is even better than that. It's not a great entry, but does not stay far behind.

Let´s start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The episode looks and sounds good. The acting's very good all around. Really liked the commissioner has a lot more to do than usual!

. The murder mystery is strong too with clever twists, turns, quirky humor and with a very satisfying ending (Leon's the killer).

But....

. I felt that Dwayne Myers did not get a proper send-off. and the episode spent very little time on his and his dads relationship.

. Also, the are a couple of moments, when the script become a bit too predictable. Especially the scene, where Florence goes to an isolated cottage on her own. What do you think is going to happen, when a detective goes to house away from people? Of course....

Overall though, Melodies of Murder" is a strong episode in a not great season.

Danny John-Jules

Warning: Spoilers
This is the farewell episode for Dwayne (Danny John-Jules) and at the time, who would have thought that he would return for a Christmas special and then return as a regular at the end of season 13 init.

Anyway, this is the season seven wrap-up, and it's good to see DI Mooney (Irish comedian Ardal O'Hanlon) settling in. He remains until the end of season nine.

I'm being serious here as a longtime fan of Death Paradise, because I do wonder quite seriously really how the police photograph the suspects for their whiteboard propped up in the police station. Really, at the crime scene do they gently ask the suspects to calmly pose for the whiteboard init, I don't quite get it really at all. Anyway, really more credit should also be given to the two loyal paramedics who turn up at the crime scene to help out DI and his team. They deserve an imdb profile please.

Episode 7.8

Commissioner Patterson has always been bothered by an unsolved case from 1988 when he was a novice detective. Jasmine Springer was the wife of the lead singer of a rising reggae band on the island who were due to embark on a european tour. Her guitarist husband's Billy wild ways caused ructions, the group split and her dead body was found on the beach. An apparent mugging gone wrong.

30 years later the band have reunited. Billy Springer contacted Commissioner Patterson that he has some new leads regarding her wife's death. During the break at a gig Billy's body is found in a locked room.

Jack Mooney has to deal with a locked room mystery with only a bent fork as a clue. Mooney also has to deal with Dwayne's dad who has invited himself in.

The episode gives more substance to Commander Patterson, it is also a case where Mooney finds that progress is slow to everyone's frustrations.

Melodies of Murder

Warning: Spoilers
A good episode overall, with even the Dwayne subplot being bearable. I believe this was to be Danny John Jules who plays him's last episode, and I think in all honesty the character had run its course.

Jack Mooney has settled in well as a character, and this bodes well moving forward.
