First runner-up Helen Morgan would later represent the United Kingdom in the 1974 Miss World competition. However, she was forced to resign only four days after winning the pageant, upon the media creating extremely negative and lurid headlines as she was an unwed mother with an 18-month-old son.
After only six months, Amparo Muñoz would surrender both the title and crown due to refusal to follow organizational regulations and to travel to Japan. During that time, no successor was willing nor assigned to officially take her vacated placement.
This was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in Asia.
Ceylon began competing as Sri Lanka after the country became a republic in May 1972.
