- Outside Parliament in Reykjavik, a man throws himself at the Minister for Industry, setting fire to them both. He dies, but she survives. Andri Olafsson, now working in Reykjavik, is assigned to the case - and quickly learns the attacker was the Minister's twin. Their roots lie up in the north, in the very area Andri had hoped to leave behind - where his old police partner, Hinrika, is now Sheriff. Trouble is brewing in the town - political protests, widespread anger at a power plant extension and a proposed aluminium factory; and for Andri personal problems in the shape of his disaffected teenage daughter. Then the foreman at the power plant - brother-in-law to the Minister and her dead brother - is found murdered on his farm. Are the two incidents - the murder, and the attack in Reykjavik - connected?
