- Grace and her friends take a weekend trip to celebrate Grace's 30th birthday in Room 104, only to be surprised by the arrival of her sinister uninvited sister.
- It's 30 year old Grace's birthday and she's determined to make it a good one by renting a hotel room with her friends Tanya and Matty. After a discussion of where they are at in their lives and a few hits on their trusty vape pens, they order a pizza and take some fun photos complete with silly glasses to post on Insta. Grace tells them they cannot post the photos and admits to them that she did not invite her sister Karen and both friends express agreement that Karen is a bit of weirdo. They admit they are happy that she was not invited, but recognize that Karen would be devastated if she found out.
When they hear a knock on the door they think it is their pizza finally arriving and are shocked to realize it's not the pizza...it's freaking Karen. Grace tries to pass off her slight as a miscommunication...obviously Karen's invite must have gotten lost in the junk mail universe. Karen doesn't exactly call BS, but the look on her face seems to suggest she's not an idiot but willing to play nice for the time being. She's a creeper, for sure. Karen insists upon getting photos with them to commemorate the evening, but they are reluctant and push it off for later. As the friends try to rally around Grace and deal with her odd and annoying sister, Karen pushes buttons by commenting on their marijuana usage and Matty's sexuality. She crosses the line with both Tanya and Matty by touching and being aggressive. So much so that Tanya loses her temper and knocks Karen to the floor before storming out to get a breath of fresh air.
Matty and Grace don't have much to say (not surprising...Karen is a weirdo) and Karen picks up on the tension. She follows Tanya out the door and informs the other two that she's going to try and talk to her. Matty and Grace discuss what just happened and Grace realizes that Karen is not only going to ruin the birthday evening but might ruin the entire weekend. Matty takes a big hit off his vape pen and Grace wonders if he should take a break. He says he feels like he is on the verge of a panic attack and needs something. She asks Matty if he can fake it for her. He reluctantly agrees.
Karen returns from speaking to Tanya and informs them that Tanya had made her realize how inappropriately she was behaving. When Grace asks Karen where Tanya is, the older sister says that Tanya's father called her about a family emergency. Both Matty and Grace think this is a bit odd, but don't seem to be too suspicious yet. Matty groans and Karen suggests that he's not looking very good, maybe a bit pale. Matty says that maybe he might have smoked too much weed and perhaps a shower would help him shake it off.
He leaves to shower, leaving Grace alone with her sister. Karen seems ecstatic over this fact and suggests they watch 80's movie and do one another's hair. Grace hears a noise from Matty in the bathroom and asks if he's okay. He tells her that he just dropped something, but his voice is muffled and groggy. It concerns her, but Karen says she will check on him since she's an EMT. Grace trusts her because what normal sister would hurt your friends, right? She turns on the tv and tells Grace to relax before disappearing into the bathroom.
Grace takes the moment to text Tanya to find out where she is. She's not paying attention to what is around her and doesn't seem to notice her sister's hand taking the curling iron from the bathroom counter. Grace hears the water shut off and suddenly Karen is emerging from the bathroom, grabbing a pillow and a blanket. Her only explanation was that Matty had passed out in the shower. When Grace goes to investigate, she opens the door and sees Karen smoothing back Matty's hair as he's laid out on the floor under a blanket. He's passed out...or so it seems.
Karen does not seem overly worried about Grace's friends and is overly excited at the prospect of finally being alone with her sister. Grace, FINALLY, is suspicious and tries to call Tanya. She gets no answer and notices her friend's car is still in the parking lot. She starts to pack her bag, getting more and more stressed as Karen attempts to persuade her not to worry and to spend time with her instead. The two begin to argue and Karen finally asks the question that is clearly burning her up. Did Grace invite her or not?
Grace loses her temper and proceeds to accuse Karen of alienating her friend's on purpose in order to have Grace be beholden only to her. Karen is deeply offended by this thought and asks Grace what she really thinks is going on there that night? Does she really think that Karen is trying to get rid of her friends? She then asks Grace if she thinks that Karen followed Tanya to the vending machine before killing her in order to get Grace to herself? Or if she had strangled Matty just to make it look like he'd passed out? Is that what Grace meant by alienating?
Clearly Grace is a little disturbed by this. She had said alienated...not freaking murdered. Grace yells for Matty to respond but he doesn't. Karen insists that he is just sleeping. Grace tries to leave but Karen demands where she's going and to go with her. Grace refuses. Karen insists and pushes until Grace snaps and demands for Karen to get out of her life. She leaves the room and slams the door, leaving Karen in tears. She howls in anger...it's crazy weird and you can see the thoughts forming in her head. Grace done made a big mistake. Should have just faked it a little harder, birthday girl.
Slow, sad music begins to play as Karen cries dejectedly. She picks up the fairly full bottle of wine from the table and you think that maybe this crazy woman might finally be leaving to nurse her wounds, but you would be incorrect. She yells after Grace and you can't see what's happening but you can hear the beating Grace is taking in the parking lot from that bottle of wine. As Karen drags Grace's body back into Room 104, 'Happy Birthday' beings to eerily play. A montage of Karen dragging both Tanya and Matty's body into their room begins and Karen arranges the bodies to be sitting around her, crazy glasses back on their faces. She proceeds to take pictures of her and their bodies, the perfect insta she was wanting, and posting it to her account with the caption of "Gracie's #dirtythirty".
And that was the 25 minute thrill ride of Room 104: FOMO
