A Question of Honor
lavatch28 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The narrator of the film in the form of an actor standing in for William Makepeace Thackeray introduces this episode as he appears in front of a carousel. He welcomes the viewer to "a world in which everyone is striving for what is not worth having." But the program reveals a very different theme as two couples genuinely fall in love and, against the social norms of their elders, secretly marry. For them, love is a greater virtual than material pursuit. A better title for the episode would be "A Question of Honor."

An untoward tumble down the stairs marks the death of the latest Lady Crawley. Even before the funeral, Sir Pit is planning to propose to Becky due to her shrewd handling of his business affairs. But unbeknownst to Sir Pit and Lady Matilda, Becky has secretly married Rawdon! An outraged Aunt Matilda somehow feels betrayed and disinherits Rawdon, leaving him only twenty pounds.

The other romantic intrigue is that of George Armstrong and Emmy Sedley. A most remarkable change in character occurs in young George, who defies his father after his double dealings have led the Sedley family into bankruptcy. At auction, someone has purchased Emmy's beloved piano, and it is delivered to her new, humble quarters. Through the assistance of the kind Captain Dobbin, George and Emmy will now wed. To George's intransigent father, Dobbin has the best line in the program: "No one of us has power over love, sir."

The stunning news has arrived of Napoleon's daring escape from the island of Elba. "Boney is on the Loose" is the clarion call. The soldiers are now given their marching orders to join the Duke of Wellington in the Low Countries. But Becky leads the charge n requesting that the women accompany the soldiers on their venture across the channel. This is quick thinking on the part of Miss Sharp, as she and George would appear to be impoverished. The major unanswered question is whether Dobbin is secretly in love with Emmy or with Becky.
