A Difficult Film to Comprehend at Times
Uriah438 October 2017
This film essentially begins during the Japanese occupation of China with three people being chased in a forest by a like number of men wearing masks on horseback. It's at this time that a young woman named "Yue" (Li Yu) watches in horror as her father is shot and killed while her boyfriend and an assailant subsequently tumble off of a cliff leaving both presumed dead. To that end, the remaining masked bandits ride off with half of a treasure map pertaining to a valuable gold mine which is highly sought after by the occupying Japanese military, the Nationalist Chinese Army and other interested parties as well. And the fact that these different factions will stop at nothing to possess the other half of the map results in personal vendettas which take on a life of their own not long afterward. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this film was quite confusing at first but as it moved along the plot began to make a little more sense. Even so, because of the manner in which certain flashbacks were utilized--along with some extremely fast English subtitles here and there--this film remained rather difficult to fully grasp and for that reason I have rated it accordingly. Average.
