After all the turmoil and action I was expecting major changes for all the main characters. They all seemed ready to move on, since most of them disapproved of Louis latest, unfair decisions. Instead, the big ball of changes deflated miserably.

The Chevalier, despite his new love and brave actions, goes back to his master five minutes after having declared "Philippe, you cannot expect to go back as it was!" but it does...

Orléans himself, after having sulked away and decided that his brother is a fraud and a killer, forgets everything and goes back to Versailles to start again his - by now tedious - menage à trois.

Marchal's actions are totally inexplicable: first he joins the rebels, then he hangs around with them even if his life is in danger. The script is even so bad as having him announcing to the conspirators that he's leaving Paris, as if he needed to inform them... Then, he turns back half way, just in time to witness the final shoot-out and getting arrested for no reason whatsoever.

The only one who actually changes is poor Colbert, who gets a lonely death....

I adored this series and binged one, two then the first half of three. Felt though like they gave up and moped home after the iron mask resolution. Tellingly, rather than watch the final three episodes in one night, it took me three laboured attempts to get through the final one. It was bland and rather like doing the obligatory cast off on an otherwise ornate knitted scarf. How many more cliches and summative platitudes could we have had? Few, given the awful nature of the blessing scene and the convoluted switch to trying to convince us that dire old Louis XIV was indeed beloved by all and sundry. And then there were the bits hanging, like...
