In the new land, peace is offered as the Mi'kmaq tribe invites the Viking settlers to a feast. Othere cues Ubbe, having noticed that the sagamaw (chief) Pekitaulet, knows some Old Norse. Ubbe is told another Nordic explorer reached the land before them. Otere's kinsman Naad has discovered gold among the gifts the natives left for the settlers and inquires in vain about its origin. Orlyg confides to his fellow slave Nissa about an offer of liberation if he kills Ingrid from blind Erik, who is seduced by Nissa in a hut and is killed by her while Ingrid's men kill Orlyg, whom she falsely promised safety. King Alfred's Saxon forces are decimated in the woods by Ivar's Vikings who set traps, ambush them and force the English to retreat. In the chaos, Alfred sees a vision of Jesus and is convinced the Christians will triumph. Isolated wandering in the mist, Harald is fatally stabbed by bishop Aldulf. An apparition of Harald's brother Halfdan claims being sent to retrieve Harald to Valhalla. Even dying, Harald stabs Aldulf fatally. The natives lead Ubbe to their Norse teacher: Floki.
