Crazy people doing crazy things
cyberknight24 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The series is about three Chinese women, two basically broken, trying hard to make ends meet in London, and one freshly coming from Hong Kong (or something like that), full of money and without anything in her mind.

The main characters recalled me of "The Powerpuff Girls" (1998). One of the women is more self-aware, the other is sweet and the third is tough.

The self-aware has a stupid job, with a sexist boss that she doesn't outright sue for harassment only because she really needs the money. She's been pushed all her life to be the best of the best and lives miserable for not being able to fulfill the expectations, drowning herself in wine.

The sweet one seems absent-minded, like a loose ball on a pinball game, but does things that are actually very smart, though very random.

The tough one is an unknown actress, fighting against a system that gives her only stereotyped roles.

Unfortunately, putting them together doesn't make much sense and, ultimately, makes the sum less fun than the individual parts. It's not as horrible as many have expressed.

Is this series worth watching? It's not my cup of tea, even though I've watched some really crazy stuff through my life. and liked most of them.

Extremely racist and uninspired
davidchen88827 November 2017
Ask a five year old to come up with a plot full of Asian stereotypes, and then get your local barista to direct it.

It would be 10 times better than "Chinese Burn." If lowbrow racial humor is your thing, do yourself a favor and watch White Chicks instead http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381707/

Fantastic pile of sexist and racist garbage!
visiblyvillainous28 November 2017
It astounds me how shows like this can see daylight in this day and age.

It's 2017, people.

Having stereotypical depictions of Asians is something that we should have grown past.

Here's what you're in for if you actually watch this hot garbage: Asian. female prostitutes. Asian male premature ejaculation jabs. Overly done fake Asian accents. Asian females vehemently refusing to date Asian men. Stereotypical submissive Asian females.

To the actors and actresses who starred in this: You should be ashamed.

Cashing in on western stereotype of Asians
centaur113528 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A waste of 30 minutes. Embarrassing to watch. I felt sorry for the actors having to perform this rubbish. They all have the potential for something excellent with a decent script. The swearing does not make it any funnier but makes it silly. Instead, it emphasises that the scriptwriter is struggling to be funny and failing even more.

Bad script, bad story, bad direction.

Car crash type television
kenmorgan-4714529 November 2017
Ten years ago there was a film called white chicks.

That film is a master piece compared to this. It's filled with offensive racial stereotypes where Chinese women are portrayed as sexual play things for white men.

Where negative racial stereotypes are reinforced and embraced. This is pretty shameful.

BBC might have ruined the career of the play writer
niweiwang29 November 2017
The BBC 'progressive' non-principle might have ruined the career of the play writer of this show.

By giving a racist 'non-comedy' air time, BBC encourages more racial tension, which is not what the TV license fee for.

BBC shall start an investigation on the programme selection process and publish the findings. The license fee contributors (especially the East Asians) deserve the whole truth.

Haven't seen this yet but pretty sure im going to check it out after reading some of these reviews. people are becoming sooooo sensitive, its hilarious but mostly sad.

stereotypes are funny and true, thats what makes comedy people. the funny differences of different people in different cultures and them integrating into different societies. why does everyone make that racist. that word is so overused that its starting to mean absolutely nothing to me.

extreme racism
sixlibra29 November 2017
This TV series sets ethnic minority representation in media back about 50 years to the age of Mickey Rooney's yellowface in Breakfast at Tiffanys. The storyline and plot is unimaginative and exploits extremely racist stereotypes about Chinese men with self degrading actors for laughs. Aside from that the acting feels forced and unnatural. The show's facebook page censored and disabled all reviews because it was incredibly low, with even BBC radio show hosts pointing out the hypocritical racism in the show.

Brilliant start
vincenteastwood1 December 2017
Very funny start I hope of a new comedy series, a welcome change to the standard boring formula British comedy show, this show was actually funny, and the people who say this stereotypes Chinese, you really don't get it, there laughing at how white people see them, please develop a IQ and and a sense a humor before running down this show, as a fan of faulty towers I appreciate direct funny comedy, not lame duck comedy like both uk and American comedy is these days.

Extremely childish, boring, and unoriginal. Coma inducing.
achan-9304629 November 2017
Yes, all the reviews are true. It is 2017 and this is shockingly racist. However, what makes this show the most unforgivable is how BORING it was.

It was truly coma inducing. I fell asleep three times during the first episode.

The characters were bland and cookie cutter.

The plot is ham-fisted.

The production values were terrible.

It's as if the BBC just gave up.

Why did the BBC fund this? No advertiser in their right mind would be associated with it.

Awful tripe. Just awful.

Exceedingly racist comedy
kohminrui30 November 2017
This is an exceedingly racist comedy. I have no idea what went through their minds when they made this show. The creators claim to be challenging stereotypes but proceed to make an entire comedy full of racist jokes for cheap laughs. No, making racist jokes for the audience and then having a comment that that's racist is not challenging stereotypes. Its perpetuating them and teaching society that racism against Asians is okay.

Typical
jahilwilliams29 November 2017
Typical left-wing media utilizing over-used vapid stereotypical jokes pandering to their white audiences with inferior senses of humor. We all know most left-wing outlets use their front of a "world peace"/"diversity enabling"/"all welcoming" identity to push forwards their immutable underlying sense of white superiority. Imagine if someone did a show like this on white people, then suicide rates for whites would spike higher than they are now (the highest of all ethnic groups) in the west. What a damn shame that BBC finds content in baseless overused comedy from the 20th century.

Only missing a 'racist neighbour' character played by Roy Chubby Brown.
fnaaar-529201 December 2017
The writers, who are Chinese themselves, had an opportunity to educate, but instead chose to resort to using dated and offensive stereotypes and act like clowns.

They made this sort of TV in the UK back in the 1970s with programmes like Love Thy Neighbour and Mind Your Language.

Yeah sure, they were *supposed* to be poking fun at the racists, but in reality, they just legitimised racist behaviour and language.

Deeply unfunny, and on the two occasions in this pilot episode, the addressing of a racial stereotype was swiftly followed by a *joke* containing another.

The writers have done Chinese people in the UK absolutely no favours at all with this awful programme. Personally, I'm looking forward to renewed amounts of racial abuse from complete strangers in the street just like I experienced growing up in London in the eighties.

Part of me wonders if this is just a big elaborate hoax by Chris Morris.

But then again, if it was, it would've been funny.

Dehumanizing, racist, sexist, and worst of all, not remotely funny.
gjy210529 November 2017
Garbage like this promotes several repulsive "values": 1) Racism is OK if you target your own people.

2) Sexism is OK if it is targeted towards men.

3) Embrace your own objectification to elevate your own social worth.

If anyone thinks that any of these are acceptable "values" to live by, I pity the fool.

Worst show I have ever seen.
elchinoltd8 January 2018
Not funny at all. Written by a bunch of self hating Asian women who think its OK to degrade their own kind. If there was an option for 0 stars this is what this truly deserves.

Its only not funny if you are closed minded and it hits too close to home for you.
jaxxboss-296-47374728 January 2018
Maybe all Caucasians and an occasional Indian should shoot down the Big bang theory or hey, lets all get mad about Game of thrones because your ancestors would never do that kind of thing. Its always funny until it is about your race, then GAWD FORBID!

LIGHTEN UP.

Racist and Sexist as it gets
jacklonghung9 December 2017
My previous review got deleted by IMDb. I guess they feel my preview is too strong. Censorship is the way to go with the West these day. Freedom of speech is not allow when you're Asian. This show is extremely harmful to the Asian community. I believe this is the type of Western propaganda that the West like to push against Asians (Orientals). The actresses and writer of this movie should be ashamed of themselves.

Some of the best Asian entertainment on TV
twmiller-4724919 November 2019
As an Asian female, I found this to be a fun and great show with solid jokes and flawless writing. Don't fall for the salty reviews here who are crying racism. Oh please, how sensitive can you be!? I also love the fact that this show was created by these inspiring Asian females which is a very rare thing in entertainment today. I would highly recommend this gem to everyone and especially Asian females as there are jokes in here only we would understand ;)

Close minded and racist storytelling
lekn2 December 2017
This comedy promotes harmful stereotypes about Asians and has offended a considerable portion of their Asian audience.

Why in this day an age are Asian dick jokes still not only a thing, But something to openly mock in media? Why is it a thing to show Asian women being easy and lusting after white men while hating on their own? This show was suppose to challenge these Asian stereotype, not reinforce them.

Me and many others are still waiting for our real voices of growing up and living as an Asian in the UK to be heard and represented on screen. i hope it will happen one day and the comedy does not come at the expense of throwing your own race under the bus.

I came in with an open mind and left feeling saddened.

This is not a comedy but hateful racism
robinking-8330126 December 2017
Remember this, when you create hateful stereotypes to further your own career; you ceased being a victim but become an accomplice and an oppressor.

Shame on BBC for approving the series.

Disastrous
haow9 January 2018
I was feeling sorry for these actresses for having to work with such a discriminatory piece until I realized that the actresses WERE the writers......

This show is pandering to every Asian negative stereotype possible. It is like an Asian kid desperately trying to fit in with the white cool clan and the only thing he could do was to become a subject of abuse by the white boys.

Maybe the BBC should have watched Fresh Off The Boat before making this trash. And the Asian writers???.....you should be ashamed of youselves for making a disgraceful programme that perpetuates old racial stereotypes.

Liked it
marcx-2810230 November 2017
I thought it was funny. I thought they were smashing the stereotypes out of the park by challenging them head-on and taking them to a ridiculous level. Maybe it was offensive, but it wasn't boring - they rocked. I guess it depends on the following episodes really - if they can keep the energy levels and move the comedy forward its all good - if they stick to the same jokes and stereotypes then I might change my opinion.
