Understated, tense, gorgeous
JohnDishwasher22 February 2021
An understated slow burn. As tense as a horror film. Psychological. Lots of pregnant silences. You see stories about the rich destroying themselves and others. You see stories about the others getting destroyed. But what if you're in that scene, neither the predator nor the prey, effected by the results, and have no control over what's happening. This film made me feel uncomfortable and helpless. Marvelous. The costumes and sets are gorgeous too. Ilsa Salas is stunning.

A life of appearances.

Warning: Spoilers
Sofía (played by Ilse Salas) is a very complex character. A rich woman living quite a monotonous life. Inside a small bubble that goes from her club to social gatherings. She likes to be the center of attention and has the last word about who's to be included in their exclusive group. Her husband then finds himself with financial problems. But they believe everything will be solved soon, so they keep on with their luxurious life. Until she realizes that that's never going to happen and her world starts to crumble. She can't accept it, even if that means going against her convictions.

Alejandra Marquez Abella builds an incredible dark story of psychological development. A very natural script. And the editing work of Miguel Schverfinger gives a raw and innovative storytelling through overlapping times.

Plastic lives within a fire prone economy
silvasiembra10 November 2019
This film captures the reality of a rich life controlled by the lust of the flesh. The director did an excellent job weaving the elements of money, judgmental mindsets, arrogance, pride, and the characteristics of vanity. The all too perfect lives stitched up with fake and deceptive threads of life. I cannot forget to mentioned the addictive vices and the wondering if you are a good person or parent surrounded by a circle of opportunist friends. I thought the coming out of the public restroom scene summed it up well. It seems that money sets you up to selfishly desires what you want no matter who you hurt. This movie confirms Victor Hugo's quote, "Adversity creates men; Prosperity creates monsters." Yet, everyone deserves a true friend despite of who you are. I hope people will watch this flick for what it really signifies.... the sad reality of a prosperous life.

Amazing movie

This movie stands out from most Mexican movies.

The film is well made, it has a good production design, good photography, very good acting, Ilse Salas doing a good job as always, very good music, it is very well directed, has an excellent hair and makeup job, there is an attractive design costume, good character development and the script is compelling and well developed. The only thing that doesn't convince me is the way it tells the story, making the film a bit confusing and sometimes slow.

The film manages to portray how they were seen in the past, and even today, social classes in Mexico and how appearances were everything in those times, even more important than being happy, the film manages to be a high quality film and very remarkable of the majority of Mexican films with a good script and good execution.

Vacuous film about the idle class; it could have made a strike, but missed it.
f. baez24 July 2019
What could have been an interesting societal study of a change of elites in the times of crisis (the falling down of Sofía De Garay's status and the rising of Ana Paola Haddad's) is lost as the characters, true to the selves of Mexican upper class, are too frivolous to understand the reality they live in. And the film does not go beyond that limited look of things.

Yes, old banking and manufacturing families went down in the crisis of 1982-88, and others -notably the mogul Carlos Slim, well portrayed as Mr. Haddad- made millions and millions, but the process was not as swift and shallow as the movie makes it be.

Acting is good, production is nice, pace is slow and the whole film ends up to (almost) nothing.

I loved this movie! The storyline, the filmography, the music... everything about it is good.... and it is also a nice feeling to finally see good Mexican movies happening in the latest years.

Don't bother!
vanessa-buendia12 July 2019
Absolutely dreadful! You can tell the cinematographer has no idea of Mexican high class society in those days and completely ignored the source material. Don't waste your time.

Nothing enjoyable
arellanor16 April 2019
The plot is boring, never interesting and terribly slow, and the development of the story is flat all the way to the and. There are scenes in which suddenly a clapping noise can be heard. The first couple of times I thought somebody was clapping inside the theater, but then I realized that sound came from the movie. No idea what are they supposed to communicate to the unfortunate audience.

Cufflink killed it
geminisoul22 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It was an interesting film, low profile but giving pleasure and all.. and then one sees the cufflinks again. Such a cheap shot at drama!! Totally illogical even with the logics set by this movie. Killed it for me.

Could not hear voices clearly, like as they were speaking from inside a box.

Worst soundtrack ever heard.

The worst movie ever!!!
calimanojeanrobert1 August 2019
The script or story is the worst. Does not make any sense. The actors are good, but the movie was a total waste of my time. Horrible!!!. I thought the movie "There Will Be Blood" was bad. But, this one was the worst!. I apologize for being this honest. I could not help it.

Miserables
libretad9 August 2021
