Over the past two years I have written reviews relating to a few previous episodes of SNL and I have criticized SNL for focusing so much negative attention on the Republican party, especially the current President of the United States, Donald Trump. Episode 43.3 was no surprise when Alex Baldwin for the umpteenth time opened this weeks episode with another oh so boring skit which could have been titled "Get out of there Mike", in reference to Vice President Mike Pence leaving an NFL game after witnessing some of the NFL players on the field disgracefully kneeling during the national anthem.
Like I said, it was another boring episode. I guess the shows writers were instructed to just keep bashing the Republican party non stop, regardless of what else is topical and also very sensitive and on the public's mind around the world, such as sexual harassment.
The guest host Kumail Nanjiiani's opening monologue referred to his recent 2017 film release titled "The Big Sick", but his main message was that racism can be a funny topic. Really Kumail? His monologue was so slow and extremely long that with each breath Kumail took, that most irritating and nauseous canned laughter which is now synonymous with SNL throughout was non stop. So much for a live audience?
Next there was more Trump bashing with actor Alex Moffat playing that a well known fake CNN news correspondent as he is looking down into a street sewer in the rain and talking (what else but) trash about Trump through his proxy's Kellyanne Conway and Hillary Clinton.
Finally a short scene was introduced with four of the regular SNL ladies referring to the 2017 New York Film Festival Women's Round Table discussing sexual harassment in a vague manner related to Harvey Weinstein (yes they actually used his name), but sadly there was no male impersonation of Harvey Weinstein, nor any attempt to relate even one of the accusations made against him. No, Aidy Bryant just asked the other three SNL cast members if they had any personal experience with Harvey Weinstein, acknowledging that he was just kicked out of the Motion Picture Academy.
Heck, in previous episodes there have been SNL skits referring to impeachment of the current U.S. President but in this episode the ladies such as Emmy award winning Kate McKinnon just recanted stories that her secret word for a creepy Hollywood producer was "he raped me". Not funny Kate. I would have thought that the vast experience of the SNL staff writers would have been primed having now had several days of planning and decades of Weinstein accusers coming forward with their specific sexual assault claims.
Oh and then we have the weekly SNL news update which opened with barely 90 seconds of Weinstein vague diatribe and concluded with as much as several minutes of even more and more Trump bashing. It just goes on and on the nausea about the Republican party. Fair and balanced? Not on your life.
The only saving grace for SNL's episode 43.3 was the phenomenal singer and live stage performance of PINK. She was great! No, she was fantastic! Her two new songs from her new album were what we have grown accustomed to hearing and witnessing from the lovely singer with that beautiful voice, Pink. They were smashingly great which prompted me to give this episode a passing grade of 5 out of 10.
Stop the Trump bashing and let's see the writers prepare even a few live skits in reference to current topical disgraced Harvey Weinstein who just happens to be a very huge financial supporter of the democratic party. May I suggest that John Goodman play his part? Chop, chop, let's get to it SNL writers. Topical yes. Acceptable by left wingers? Most likely not. By the way I am Canadian so I have no affiliation to either political party in the U.S.. I just want to see SNL attempt to be fair in their so called topical comedy coverage. Hey Lorne, are you listening?
