The plastic dice that Mara picks up are 12-sided ("dodecahedron") dice, and are were first commonly associated with games like the original Dungeons & Dragons(tm) in the late 1970s. The original set included several different dice (4-sided, normal 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-, 12-, and 20- sided) that gave different probability distributions and combinations. Such dice are now widely associated with a variety of table-top games.
