King William the Conqueror first brought the Jews to England. Within a few years Crusader frenzy was sweeping Europe. The Jewish community of York were attacked by the locals and they took refuge in the Royal Castle. On the 15th March 1190 a whole community, some 150 men women and children, died in what is now called Cliffords Tower. Some say there is a still a Jewish boycott on York.
