Capsule Review: Theevandi (6 Stars)
nairtejas18 September 2018
Fellini TP's Theevandi reignites my faith in Malayalam cinema, the same way Sethu's Oru Kuttanadan Blog (2018) diminishes it. The degree of novelty in Fellini's approach as well as writer Vini Vishwa Lal's writing is laudable as they superimpose a stark social issue hampering the Indian youth's lifestyle and future into a light story that is politically powered to attract its main audience (Keralites). The makers got me when they added an explicit reference to the dangerous Blue Whale Challenge game somewhere in the second half and I was floored. The super talented Tovino Thomas stars as a young, jobless man who gets up in the morning so that he can smoke through the day. He has no regard for his loved ones and treats them like the butts of the cigarettes that he smokes like he's making passionate love with those slender cylinder-like structures. Thomas and his co-stars act like Theevandi is their final film, as Fellini comes out with a cardboard message about the cons and only cons of tobacco consumption. Watching Theevandi and the collection of refreshing jokes and local and social references is a treat, which makes it a great watch despite the predictability of the plot, and the unneeded gimmick at the end. It's a film that everyone should watch and then recommend it to people who smoke. As a second-hand smoker, watching so many people smoke so many cigarettes throughout the 130 minutes gave me a bit of cancer scare.
Simple & Nice!

Watched it after hearing lot of positive reviews. A decent movie for time pass. There are some nice laughs here and there. Felt the climax too predictable and simple; could have been made more interesting. Overall, a nice entertainer.
A good flick.

A Nice Movie with a good message

I would say Tovino's movies started giving a minimum guarantee. Nothing special about the movie but certainly it is well directed and everyone's actions looks so real. At the end of the day Theevandi gives a good message about harmful about of smoking. I don't think anyone will quit smoking after watching this movie, but will be able to pass a message to the society.
Not a blockbuster

Theevandi doesn't quite reach its destination

A movie about a smoker trying to break out of his habit as he stands to lose everything he loves. That's the premise of this movie.
Tovino plays the title role. A non stop smoker who whiles away time with his friends is faced with the task of quitting smoking to save the love of his life. The setting is a typical village with some local politics as well as typical characters. Suraj plays Madhuettan who is Devi's (Tovino's love interest) father. He has a good role in the movie which he does well. Samyukta Menon as Devi also does well. While the story starts of well, the ending is abrupt and leaves with lot of questions.
There is some comedy but It's not a laugh riot. Safar is a character who is fun and so is Shwanan. Libash and Suseej are the other main side kicks.
This movie has couple of kissing scenes which is very heartening to see. Mollywood is moving in the right direction.

A Heart-Warming Tale of De-Addiction

Warning: Spoilers
Mild Spoilers Ahead
As the film opens, its pouring heavily and we see Damodaran walking anxiously in the varanda of his home as his wife cries in labor pain. His brother-in-law comes in saying he was not able to find a single taxi to take her to hospital. Amid increasing cries of pain, she delivers but we hear no cry of baby, he's stillborn. And we witness a miracle (which comes later in the climax too), A Midas puff (touch) brings the baby back to life. These similar uncanny incidents light up the movie and differentiates from the rest.
One of the movies to be released after the Floods, the other being Ranam. The movie rides on Tovino's charisma as a performer, who's on a roll starting from Guppy, he never ceases to amaze with his performance and this being no exception. From the trailer and the songs, had got the feel that it's going to be a de-addiction movie, but it proves to be much more than that, it tells a gripping tale of Bineesh (Tovino) who absolves his habit in the backdrop of a political satire.
The Movie is set in the fictional village of Pullinad which boasts of having its own Number plate PL. Bineesh who like any other child of his age while playing goli, when spots a thrown away cigarette butt and with his friends encouraging he smokes it out of curiosity. It's just the beginning. And when later uncle asks him to buy cigar from the nearby shop and for the balance amount asks to have candy. Nobody would have thought a habit was going to set in. The routine continues as the amount given to buy increases from 10 to 50 and his choice of candy changes to Boomer and lastly to center-fresh which was excellently portrayed. And we get to know Bineesh has also grown up in age and taste. And to later becoming a chain-smoker aka Theevandi.
Actor Sudheesh gets a meaty role after a long time as the pesky uncle, he's one of the actors who I feel as underused in Malayalam film industry. Saiju Kurup as the gullible brother in law raised few laughs in beginning but his sudden transformation after the incident in the party room wasn't well conceived on the screen, but that was only flaw which I found in otherwise a heartwarming tale. Hats off to Debutant Fellani and Writer Vini Vishwa Lal.
It's Vini Vishwa Lal's third movie after 'Second Show' and 'Koothara', And Koothara was a major debacle as the makers had high hopes for the movie but ended cropper at BO. It was a coming of an age movie of Engineering students told in the raw way, sans any fast-peppy songs. I had loved the movie in parts, but some parts of second half was a major let down. Though having Mohanlal in Villain role aka extended cameo couldn't save the film. And now the screen writer had made a strong comeback with this movie.
And to the online trolls and the fuss around the lip lock scene, I just want to remind that in 1978, one of the boldest films of the industry was made which went on to become one of the top grossers of that year. So, as Avalude Ravukal celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, let's not bother about the online media who exaggerates everything nowadays, take away the luster out of this impressive movie.

'Theevandi' has been scripted by Vini Vishwa Lal, the writer behind 'Second Show' and 'Koothara'. T.P Fellini's directorial debut does borrow vibes from those two films. The film talks about the birth, adolescence, and adulthood of Bineesh - who arrives into the world as a stillborn but quickly responds to cigarette smoke, a habit (or rather an addiction) he picks up as he grows older.
The first half boasts excellent writing and direction, supplemented by a crackling performance from Tovino. There are scenes involving Bineesh and his cronies sneaking into a dilapidated house to take their first drags and the silliness that follows in school. A few laugh-out-loud moments ensue. The love-angle, though half-baked, is cute. Samyuktha Menon does her heroine job quite okay.
Also, as in the other two films written by VVL, a horde of supporting characters are present in 'Theevandi' as well. Saiju Kurup was the best (and funniest) of the lot, while a restrained Suraaj comes a close second. Considering how well Tovino pulls off the high-school days, his second-half act comes across as a bit lacking. Not doubting the performer that he is, it's the writing that lets him down.
The 'Blue Whale' and 'Sierra Leone' human-chain angles in the second half seemed a little out of place though. Amid all this, the writer tries hard to justify the fact that it's a film with a 'stop smoking' message by raising the stakes for Bineesh's smoking addiction. The conclusion? Too vague, sudden, and unimpressive! The supposed 'twist' at the end also doesn't add much. But that doesn't deter 'Theevandi' from being a 100% feel-good flick. 'Theevandi' might be the much-needed breather that you need after a hectic week!
Enjoy it for what it is, but you'll be a little disappointed that there's not much to chew on after the film draws to a close, considering the interesting concept and the wacky first half.
