"Cat Food" is most likely the best episode to come out of the Netflix anthology
show "Creeped Out" since the acting is great and the story is also . . . well, great!
In this episode a young boy named Stu who cheats his way through everything (or
in his own words "It's not cheating, it's winning without the pain.) sees that his
elderly neighbor across the street is able to lift items with large weights (in this
case packs of cat food since she lifts three packs at a time) he decides to watch
her, but things can only get weirder from there. He then continues to watch her
and the woman decides to pour the cat food into a tub and take a dip into it. Stu
alerts his mom of this after she catches him watching the elderly woman. His
mom then goes across the street and confronts the woman, but doesn't find
anything odd or weird about the woman after searching the shed for a short
moment and answering a brief phone call. So now his mom must run off to work
and guess who she leaves behind to babysit Stu? Yep, the woman from across the
street. As his mom puts it "Oh, and thanks for the idea" referring to who she has
now chosen for the babysitter. We now move into the amazing final act, which is
greatly plotted out with great acting (this is arguably the best moment of the
show). The woman offers Stu a piece of gum (or something like that it doesn't
matter), but Stu says that the old woman act is up. She responds simply by saying
"Act?". A little bit of firing between the two and honestly there's a really weird line
where the woman says "I can't wait to be a boy again." which is . . . odd. But
anyhow the creature that the woman is takes people's bodies every lifetime. Also,
when she follows Stu up to his room she says that the cat food is for
nourishment. So, when they meet up in the room Stu threatens jump out the
window and escape, but the lady tells Stu that she's been watching him too and
that she only needs to call his school to tell them that he's been selling test
answers (his father is the vice principal or something like that) to fellow cheats,
then his father will lose his job and his sister who works so hard for her scores will
also be accused of cheating. So Stu asks her what he has to do and she says that
all he needs to do is win a game of chance since the creature that she is (there's a
name I can't remember) has to win the body, they can't just steal it. Stu then goes
down and takes his trick coin, but she catches him and says "You know I see
everything Stu." She then spots a deck of cards and says "Oh, I know. Why don't
we play a game of cards. All you have to do is find a card that is higher than
mine." So, they play a game of cards and Stu wins, BUT it is because Stu was
cheating with his camera (which is somehow already connected to his computer
conveniently placed behind the lady). The creature becomes outraged that he has
cheated and leaves the house. And the next scene is just true genius in acting AND
plot. In the next scene it is the next day and Stu comes to the kitchen table where
his sister is already sitting going through a deck of cards. And this is what goes
down:
Stu: I'd show you a cool trick with those, but I know you don't like cheating.
Kelly (his sister): Oh, I don't know. People can change, can't they? Duck? Turns out, Kelly would do anything to protect you from being expelled. Including playing a harmless little card game.
Stu: What have you done?
Kelly: Thank you for teaching me that camera trick, Stu.Otherwise, I might never have beaten Kelly. But, it isn't cheating, right, Duck? It's simply . . . winning . . . without the pain.
I mean like this final scene is absolutely AMAZING. The acting is brilliant and it
makes the whole episode a win. The girl who plays Kelly is absolutely amazing
and this final scene makes the whole episode worth watching. (Not saying the
episode isn't good.) Make sure to watch this if you're watching "Creeped Out", and
do NOT skip around it.
