Casanova Wong stars and Hwang Jang-Lee does a Where's Waldo?
ckormos113 February 2020
It starts with a guy working in a field gets a reminder from his teacher to be constantly ready to defend. Casanova Wong, the lead, plays the fighter who must not fight. He puts on a mask and defeats nine Japanese at once. His teacher then beats him up. He leaves to learn more. He finds a teacher but he has an evil ulterior motive.

My copy is a digital file that plays as wide screen on a HDTV and is English dubbed by the A team of voice overs. It often cuts to 4:3 size and not dubbed. There are also a few segments that are just missing.

Hwang Jang-Lee is credited but he escaped my notice.

The fights are good and frequent. They are mostly hand to hand. There are no special moments or amazing fight moves. I rate it simply average for the year and genre.

Generally below par

Warning: Spoilers
MARTIAL MATES is a boring little kung fu drama from South Korea. The main character is a bit of a moaner, determined to learn the martial arts in the face of opposition from his family and peers who want him to be a farmer instead. To this end he meets up with some Japanese soldiers and proceeds to battle them in the wood. This plot goes on forever until the stakes are finally raised for some life-or-death battles at the climax. Not that you'll care much, for with the poor dubbing, grainy picture quality, and generally below-par choreography, there's little to write home about here. The film is advertised as starring Casanova Wong and Hwang Jang Lee but was made before either were famous, so they're only in minor roles.
