The concept of a movie that takes place within an audio commentary is one that director/co-writer Brian Ward had wanted to try for nearly 15 years. During his day job, Ward produces audio commentaries and bonus features for various Blu-rays and DVDs and he always thought this would make an interesting story, but never had the chance to try it until this short film for the 48 Hour Film Project - Los Angeles.
The song was done a cappella on set, since the accompanying music had not yet been written or recorded. A rough cut of the musical number was cut together over the course of lunch on the day of the shoot and sent to the movie's composer, Cassandra Cymbal, so that she could begin work on it. After principal photography, stars Stephanie Griffith and David Nett went to Cymbal's studio to re-record their lyrics.
This is Slushpile Entertainment's 14th Los Angeles 48 Hour Film Project. Their first was in 2002 and was also a musical.
This film is part of a bigger shared universe for Slushpile Entertainment, in that, David Nett's character 'Les Bootley,' is the same character who made a deal with the devil in "Soul Provider." In that film, the deal he struck was to become a successful actor. Meanwhile, the character 'Cassandra Page,' played by Carolyn Feres, can also be seen as an actress in the film being watched by the theatre audience in "Introducing Dwayne Browning."
At the award screening for the Los Angeles 48 Hour Film Project, producer Frank Mohler and director Brian Ward presented members of the cast and crew with the screen-used decorated cookies, which had been preserved with shellac, as thank you gifts.
