- In 18th century France a pair of postmen - father and son - who used to deliver mail by stilts have been forced out of business due to the introduction of pigeon post. With no post to deliver, their days have now become quiet, leaving them to contemplate their purpose in life.
One uneventful day, the father comes across a dead pigeon with an undelivered package. He brings it home excitedly and drops it on the table. The son looks in the package and sees that the contents are valuable and, seeing this as the end to their days of poverty, thinks about keeping them. His father however is determined to deliver the package to its rightful owner and puts it in his satchel, taking up his stilts and lamp. The son reluctantly follows him out the door and into the deep snow.
Together they travel through the steadily-worsening weather. Half way through their journey, as night falls, the winds become a blizzard. Struggling to continue through it, the father trips and falls from his stilts, tumbling down a ledge and breaking one of his stilts. His son slides down the ledge to find that his father cannot move. He looks for shelter from the storm and sees a rocky cave that should provide shelter. Taking his father to the cave, the son uses the broken stilt to make a fire.
In the morning the son discovers that his father has died during the night. After burying his father, the son contemplates returning home and keeping the package, but decides to follow his father's wishes and sets out again through the snow to deliver the post.
