A lot of subtlety with this one!
In 1979, George Hamilton had great success with "Love at First Bite". And, this success would easily explain why a proposed series, "Mr. & Mrs. Dracula" was proposed....though it was a less than stellar pilot and the networks refused to put it into production. But someone must have seen something in the idea, as they actually made two pilots...retooling the idea and failing a second time as well. Interestingly, having two pilots isn't a terrible thing...the original "Star Trek" only got approved after a second pilot was completed with a mostly new cast.
Why did this show not make it? Well, the simple answer is subtlety...or a complete lack of it. The show was often broadly written, the audience guffawed at EVERYTHING (which only made it seem less funny in the process) and the addition of a talking bat puppet...well, it was godawful! None of the cleverness of the movie...just a few seemingly stolen ideas (such as the way the show begins) and the scenes of Drac (Dick Shawn) in a New York bar.
