The backstory of seemingly benign aliens coming to earth offering to solve all of mankind's ills but whose secret agenda is to harvest them for food, is channeled from an original The Twilight Zone classic, 'To Serve Man'.
"Utangatta" ("Utangátta" in the Icelandic spelling) translates to "clueless" or "out of place" in Icelandic.
The opening scene, where Owen answers questions before a NATO assembly, seems to be set in the 1950's, as out-of-date flags are used for Canada, Greece, and the US (we see the 48-star flag, which ceased to be the official flag in 1959). The map of world confirms this time frame, as it shows a united USSR, and a divided Germany.
This episode is the third time Owen was mentioned to have been drinking a "Gimlet".
The orderly has to enter the code "5-6-7-8" to access a room. This is the same code Annie had to enter in Sebastian's fur shop when they came back to steal the lemur and one of Sebastian's goons had changed the code from the original "1-2-3-4".
