Transformers For the Win

Good documentary that leaves out a large factor;

Transformers defeated Go-Bots for one cery large reason - Transformers was shown over antenna five days a week, and Go-Bots was shown over cable on the USA Network.

Decent...though I am clearly not the target audience

I think to most appreciate this installment of "The Toys That Made Us" you should be in your 40s or younger...and, perhaps, also be a guy. After all, I'm in my 50s and never had any interest in Transformers because I was in college when they debuted.

This episode follows the origins of the toy in Japan with two different companies and shows how the product increased in popularity worldwide when it was taken to the United States and a major marketing campaign was introduced. Like many of the toys in the series, it is about marketing....spinoff cartoons and how they helped to take a big brand and make it a mega-brand. Overall, fascinating....even if you are too old to care about this particular toy.

Creation, Migration, Failure and Rebirth

The Toys that Made Us Transformers is a decent installment of the eight-part documentary series, but not their strongest outing. While the exploration of the very joint collaboration and interactions between Japanese and American toy companies is of interest, the fun of the quirky and often outlandish presence of story tellers is missing. The episode has touching moments, comedic elements, and lots of who did what and why though the creative process, mechanical engineering, comic book marketing, early successes, struggling of the late 1980s, and rebirth in film and toy concept which make us the Transfomers toy story, but it feels like the producers tried too hard to force an emotion which doesn't really exist for this toy line as it does for others. Just not that engaging.
