Sex & Nudity

  • One character states that her breasts have grown.
  • During a fight, a character claims that another characters breasts have grown.
  • A character says that another character has a "sexy figure".
  • Natsuki, like a classic Tsundere, accuses the player of looking up her skirt and calls them a pervert.
  • A character, Yuri, states she has touched herself with a pen she stole from the player.
  • The game has a handful of sex references, but nothing is ever shown. The beginning even shows a message saying that all the characters are 18 years old.

Violence & Gore

Profanity

  • Uses of the words F***, B**** and S*** after the second act.
  • Just like the violence and gore, the profanity doesn't come up until the game reveals it's true colors and what it's actually about. But unlike the violence and scares, it's not as common but it comes up semi-frequently.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drinking wine is referenced
  • I see that some people confused the actual game with mods. There is no drug or alcohol use or any sort of indication.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The game opens with a warning that it might not be suitable for children under 13 or people who are easily disturbed.
  • The game also warns: Individuals suffering from anxiety or depression may not have a safe experience playing this game.
  • There are a couple of Jump Scares in some of the scenes
  • This game is about as scary as most well done horror games, movies, and books, and can give of feelings of sadness and paranoia. It overall goes on par with a Stephen King book.
  • Suicide is referenced and happens.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Yuri confesses to the protagonist that she feels sexual desires for him. She also says she uses a pen of the protagonist to touch herself. Said in Act 2 of the game.
  • Some references to cutting oneself for sexual pleasure.
  • No direct visuals. Very few innuendos. And then there is Yuri with the pen..
  • During Act 3 with Monika. She will randomly bring up a random topic to talk about. One of the things she'll say is "a k-kiss?" Parodying romance games. She will jokingly tell the player "don't lie if it turned you on"

Violence & Gore

  • After rejecting or accepting her love confession, Yuri stabs herself and dies. As Yuri lays on the floor after stabbing herself to death, there's red blood stains everywhere. days seem happening and the blood stains have turned dark brown. In addition, Yuri's eyes sink into her sockets and her skin goes pale, reflecting real decomposition of a corpse.
  • We see the arm of a girl with injuries showing that she self-inflicts damage.
  • Sayori will kill herself during Act 1, no matter if you choose to love her as a girlfriend or love her as a friend, she only does this due to the programming in her code causing her depression by Monika
  • If you say 'yes' or 'no' to one of one the characters (Yuri) they will grab a knife and stab their stomach twice and then their chest and let go of the knife and drop dead.
  • After a character dies the title screen shows one of the girls being all distorted and creepy with her body parts and eyes all Misplaced
  • It is stated that the character Natsuki is physically abused by her father, who also refuses to feed her, resulting in her constant hunger and short stature.
  • During act 2, if you write a poem and choose all words that Yuri likes and show it to Natsuki first, there is a 1/3 chance that her eyes will pop out.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • After the protagonist discovers that Sayori committed suicide, the game begins to glitch intentionally making the main story change genre to a horror story.
  • Yuri and Natsuki act normally, but suddenly behave strangely in their scenes after the second act, which can be frightening.
  • Many glitches lead to disturbing audio and/or visuals (like the anime-style characters all of a sudden get very realistic and life-like eyes or lips in certain scenes) or a character suddenly pops up or changes from a surprise glitch (essentially being a jumpscare in many scenes)
  • The game's meta narrative elements could put many on edge. The game even actually deletes, on its own, game files on your actual computer and knows what name you give your computer.
  • Monika may jumpscare the player if they are recording her with OBS, the camera will zoom in on her like nothing will happen. Then, her face will be all yellow and cracked to freak out the player after she acts calm.
  • Parents should know that Doki Doki Literature Club is a Steam game disguised as a dating simulator for the first act, and for the second act it takes on a dark style of storytelling. However, due to the graphic novel style of the game, the violence is not too severe.
  • At the end of the game, (a partially deleted) Monika realizes that there is no happiness in Doki Doki Literature Club! and ends up deleting the entire game.
  • Some of the "special poems" may be disturbing. If you are able to read the redacted poem, or talks about a doctor diagnosing a patient with some kind of sickness, that is causing nausea and then to throw up blood. Many other poems contain dark or creepy themes, like giving up, or the pain of knowing everything.
  • It is a rather disturbing game that may affect the player emotionally, depending on how he/she takes it. The first three to four hours of the game (depending on how fast or slow the player progresses through it) may seem normal, but once the first "Ending" takes place, everything goes downhill when you try to "start a new game."
  • Two of the characters commit suicide, one off-screen and one on-screen.
  • During act 2, if you write at least 2 poems that Natsuki likes, a scene will happen with her eyes and mouth glitching out and blood running down from her eyes. Her neck will then snap and she will run towards the player, jumpscaring them.
  • It is implied that Natsuki is being abused by her father and is malnourished, explaining her small height.
