investigation a subtext for a deeper struggle for forgiveness
spasticfreakshow27 June 2018
This is one of those episodes where an investigation takes place, start to finish, but is more of a side plot/background for what's really going on, and only thematically tied to the crux of the action. Indeed, the case of the week was indeed weak, and perhaps intentionally so, to clearly be a vaguely related backdrop to the theme of forgiveness and family. Sherlock's old sponsor Alfredo tells him he holds grudges, and should learn to forgive, after Sherlock criticizes Alfredo for forgiving his own brother, who was responsible for many of Alfredo's downward spirals in life; Watson echoes that encouragement for forgiveness - as only in so doing, can one regain their family. Similar to the theme of the case of preserving life and living forever, forgiving one's own family members for unforgivable betrayals is one of life's greatest challenges and questions. Sherlock even quotes to Alfredo, in a seemingly throw-away scene by the sea, sentences from a philosopher poet about the ocean, but the gist is really the search for meaning in life. I believe the message of the episode is blared loudly: that we should be more forgiving and more generous, as one never knows when death may come and nobody lives forever.

Good episode marred by nonsense car 'facts' in the opening scene.

A deceivingly simple plot line...

Fact is, there is only America
reinhardt-thomas7 May 2022
The episode starts with Alfonso calling sherlock a smart guy after he gibbered out a completely wrong fact about cars. The author of this episode should look up that there are in fact other countries than America in this world.
