After seeing critical success with docuseries like “America to Me” and “Warriors of Liberty City,” Starz is continuing its prestige documentary push with “Leavenworth.” Produced by Steven Soderbergh, alongside Paul Pawlowski and David Check, the upcoming five-hour doc tells a controversial true-crime story that plays out in the military justice system.

“Leavenworth” is centered on Clint Lorance, who’s serving a 19-year sentence for murder at The United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth. While deployed in Afghanistan in July 2012, the former lieutenant ordered fire on three local men riding a motorcycle, killing two of them and outraging his platoon. In a first-hand account of a soldier navigating the U.S. Army’s legal system, Lorance seeks to overturn his conviction, provoking emotional debate between supporters and detractors that rises to the national stage. As determinations on Lorance’s fate unfold,...

Last Year’s Winner: “Wild Wild Country”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: Since Netflix earned its first nomination (and win) in the category, only Netflix original series — or series that have benefitted from streaming on its platform — have won the category. “Making a Murderer” broke through for the digital giant in 2016, earning the initial nod and win, while “Wild Wild Country” took home the title again in 2018. In between, “Planet Earth II” won for BBC America (while “Chef’s Table” and “The Keepers” were nominated as Netflix originals). The initial “Planet Earth” and its sequel both stream on Netflix (and have for some time).
Fun Fact: In the 21 years this category has been active (it was called Outstanding Nonfiction Series before this and Outstanding Informational Series before that), PBS has won in 14 of those years and has 15 trophies, thanks to two of its programs tying in 1999. There has never been...

In 2003, Steve James’ first docuseries debuted on PBS. “The New Americans” was a seven-hour “verité style” film following a diverse group of immigrants and refugees who left their homes to move to America. The expansive, six-and-a-half-year project covered the subjects in their native countries as well as in the states, and all 411 minutes aired over three nights as one big event.
“It didn’t play theatrically because it was seven hours long,” James said. “It played at Idfa, SXSW, and one other film festival, and then it was on public television, and then it was gone.”
As James distinctly remembers, this was a time before streaming and DVRs, before Netflix and HBO sparked national news with buzzy docuseries, and before an era of peak TV led to massive libraries of endlessly accessible content.
“I remember thinking, ‘Jeez. All that work, it’s on television, and then it’s done,'” James said.

Even before he sets foot on the court in an NBA game this season, LeBron James has had quite a year. Continuing a steady stream of film and TV projects through his SpringHill Entertainment and longtime manager Maverick Carter, the basketball megastar has amassed an impressive list of development partnerships across the media landscape.
On the TV side alone, James has struck series deals with every broadcast network, many prestige cable outlets, and a streaming service to boot. Aside from the biggest title on his film docket, the long-awaited “Space Jam 2,” James has lent his stamp to a number of features that exist outside the basketball world.
And these aren’t solely ideas for the future, working their way toward a possible pickup. Since last fall, he’s helped produce all of the following films and programs:

Watching a documentary about Junior Seau was never going to be an objective experience for me.
On long car rides to visit my grandparents in Oceanside, CA, I would bring along years of Chargers media guides, replete with decades of records, statistics, and game results I would try committing to memory as if they were holy texts. In the mid-’90s, the same defensive megastar would grace those covers year after year. It’s the same man, captured in his signature celebration pose, whose No. 55 jersey I would wear one Halloween as a scrawny grade-schooler posing as an NFL great. Wearing that plastic helmet would be the closest I’d come to playing football myself, but to this day, at the bottom of a dresser drawer, I still have a 1995 Afc Championship shirt. Guess who’s the only player on it.

The Liberty City Warriors youth sports league, the subject of a new Starz docuseries, has made quite an impact on its Miami community over the past three decades. Among the NFL stars it has spawned: Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Devonta Freeman, Antonio Brown, Duke Johnson, and Teddy Bridgewater.
But for hip-hop icon Luther Campbell, who co-founded the organization to help the youth in his rough Miami neighborhood, those aren’t his favorite success stories. He points to City of Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon, who appears in “Warriors of Liberty City,” the six-part docuseries that premieres on Sunday night.
“He was a little kid, smaller than everybody else, and started out by playing baseball, then went to play football,” Campbell recalled. “He ends up going to college and becomes a lawyer. He comes back from being a lawyer, travels the world, works as a public defender, then he comes back to the program.

Starz, Amazon, and AMC braved the TCA summer press tour on Saturday.
Charles Donalson III of the docuseries “America to Me” held the gathered reporters in rapt attention with an impassioned speech, while Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke touted the company’s diversity.
Here are 4 things we learned from Saturday’s session.
1. Charles Donalson III, one of the subjects of the Starz docuseries “America to Me,” held nothing back when he laced into TCA attendees about the real issues affecting minorities in America during the panel for “America to Me” and the other Starz docuseries, “Warriors of Liberty City.”

“America to Me” subject Charles Donalson III used his platform during the Starz docuseries panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday to call out what he called America’s “hoarding” of wealth, citing examples he saw right there at the conference’s Beverly Hilton setup.
The gap of financial resources is particularly prevalent in the entertainment industry, Donalson added. He’s now a small part of that business, and so is everyone he addressed.
The high school graduate pointed out “all the money it takes just to set up this room,” referring to the Beverly Hills Ballroom. He continued, “Jesus Christ, you know how much food you have out there? Y’all are laughing, but I’m being dead serious right now. You all know how much food it is out there?”

The second season of “Vida” will see an expanded episode count (with 10) and an expanded cast, Starz announced at its Television Critics Assn. session Saturday. Roberta Colindrez has booked a series regular role in the sophomore year of Tanya Saracho’s Latinx half-hour.
Colindrez will play “Nico,” a new bartender at the family bar in the show that centers around two Mexican-American sisters from the Eastside of Los Angeles who “couldn’t be more different or distanced from each other.”
Saracho is also set to make her directorial debut in this upcoming second season.

‘Warriors of Liberty City': 2 Live Crew’s Luther Campbell Coaches Up Next Wave of NFL Talent (Video)
Despite its small stature and dangerous nature, Miami’s Liberty City continues to churn out NFL talent — that’s at least partially due to the football program pioneered by 2 Live Crew’s Luther Campbell. It’s also the subject of the upcoming Starz docuseries, “Warriors of Liberty City,” which hails from executive producers LeBron James and Maverick Carter.
The series follows a season with the Liberty City Warriors, a youth football program founded by the rapper affectionately referred to as “Uncle Luke.” Beyond football, the Liberty City Warriors Optimist Club is a youth organization that sponsors sports teams, dance, cheerleading, tutoring and academic support.

“Here’s an artist that we respect and he wants to play in our sandbox,” Power executive producer Courtney Kemp said today of Kendrick Lamar joining the Starz drama. Stressing that the Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson co-staring and Ep’d series wasn’t looking to toss in flashy guest stars to “grab more eyeballs,” Kemp told the Saturday morning TCA session that the acclaimed and best selling Lamar “showed up to win” for what is his scripted small screen debut.
Discussing how Lamar came to jump on board with the top rated Power via his friendship with Jackson, Ep Kemp revealed that Lamar will play “a drug addict” named Laces on the show’s Season 5 fifth episode on Sunday. First announced on July 25, the character handles some dirty work for Jackson’s ruthless Kanan in his battle with rivals in the NYC underworld.

Kendrick Lamar is going to appear on “Power” tomorrow, and at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday, showrunner Courtney Kemp explained how and why that casting came about. And no, it wasn’t because they wanted a big name to show up on the Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson-executive produced Starz drama.
“Um, no there are no guest stars like that,” Kemp told reporters when asked if they were planning on bringing on any more well-known names. “That wasn’t even the plan. The plan was not a guest star.”
“What happened was [50 Cent] was like, ‘Kendrick had mentioned he wanted to be on the show,'” Kemp said. “And then I got on the phone with Kendrick and said, ‘What do you want to play?’ ‘Cause that’s my favorite thing to ask an actor. ‘What do you want to do that you’ve never done before?’ That’s my favorite question.
