Best I've watched ... so far
artyyeo14 December 2020
This is the best Chinese TV series I have ever watched. Having squared that away, let's get into the meat proper.

Acting: The acting performance across the board is well above average and almost every single person has pretty decent acting abilities. There were no sore thumbs sticking out. Allow me to highlight: watch for the acting performance of:
  • Vivian Wu (Empress Dowager) : she was able to project a distinctly Empress Dowager presence when she opens her mouth. Her diction and intonation were simply astonishing. You can literally sense the raw power emanating from her when she spoke. Bravo!
  • Xun Zhou (Ruyi herself): Xun is a versatile actress as is shown in the many films she has acted in. Her versatility is displayed here in the wide spectrum of emotions she was able to depict here. She was also able to capture my heart to side with her along the way. Highly gifted actress.
  • Chun Li (Imperial Noble Consort Ling): Although her pronunciation style accentuated her femininity, the clarity of her speech is stellar. I can hear her speak again and again. She has an unusual ability to make her words fall, not just on my ears, but also onto my heart. Quite a stunning acting skill.

  • Janine Chun-Ning Chang (Noble Consort Hailan): Although she played a supporting role, literally supporting Ruyi all the way to the end, her ability to depict the range of personality from the quiet type (speak when spoken to) in the beginning to violating the palatial decorum for the sake of loyalty to Ruyi, is quite a stunning unfolding of the growth in her character. I have to kowtow to such acting.

  • Huan Qi (RongPei, Ruyi's personal palace assistant and confidant): That scene on the palace walk when she was noticed by Ruyi for the first time and was asked to join her palace is one of the best acted scenes in the whole series. Her acting was so well done that at the end of that scene, I wished I have such a confidant in real life.

  • Jie Dong (XiaoXian Empress - the 1st Empress): Her ability act to depict the character's need to keep suppressing herself to the point of implosion was masterfully expressed throughout the length of her character in the series. One of the most memorable scenes was on her death bed in Episode 39 (I think). Her ability to express the feelings of dissatisfaction (with the Emperor), the shock (of which I'll not tell here), the confusion and the deep anguish and disappointment were top-shelf performance. It made me empathize with her. Her ability to exhibit the regal submissiveness, quiet personality and softness simply melts the heart when she spoke.

Costume Design: if you can tell how much effort is put into the costume design, something is wrong with your eyes. Colors are stunning and majestic. Very attractive, indeed.

Screenplay: some phrases are common but there are others that are more exotic and ancient; perhaps, pulled out from ancient writings. Dialogs are limited to the confines of regal conversations but still very well crafted as the twists and turns unfold. The screenplay supported the many tensions in the series very well.

Songs: Ah ... the songs ... I was totally in love with the songs and I had to buy the entire soundtrack. They are specularly composed and provides a nice platform to accompany the series; especially, the theme song for the first 2/3 of the series that used big drums to signify the weightiness and severity of the throne in the Forbidden City.

RUYI'S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE: Unconditional & Unrequited Love
Jinxxa_Wolf10 November 2020
RUYI'S ROYAL LOVE IN THE PALACE (Ru Yi Zhuan) was a really well made series. I watched it right after I finished Story of Yanxi Palace, back to back, and at first I had very mixed feelings. But instead of letting my love for Yanxi interfere with my love for Ruyi's story, I decided they were both great and equally lovable, albeit different perspectives of the same era, during Emperor Hong Li (Qianlong Emperor) reign.

Personally, I really loved that Ruyi's story tells almost the complete opposite story than that of Yanxi. Both are such amazing series and two of my top favorite historical dramas now. Both are stories of equally strong women and how they survive in the Forbidden City. Both drama's are almost perfect in their own ways.

Some reviewers criticize UlaNara Ruyi (Xun Zhou) for being a weak portrayal of women, but if anything, it is the exact opposite. She is exceptionally brave to endure all that she did, all the twisted schemings, and hidden dangers of the palace. Never does she whimper and try to flee, or worse-join in on the twisted schemings herself-instead she becomes a woman worthy of respect and honor. For Ruyi, there was so much brutality and backstabbing around her. For her to endure with grace, humility, and even optimism all that she did-well she's all the more a strong woman for it. She fought for her love and yet, stood up to him when it mattered most. And, compared to Yanxi's heroine (who I equally loved in her own way), Ruyi offers a more realistic portrayal of historical feminism in China. Neither should be seen as lesser.

I agree, with those that criticize the Emperor Hong Li (Wallace Huo), it was difficult to watch as his character degrades throughout the length of the series. It became harder and harder to see what Ruyi saw in him, but the fact that she stood up and held her own made the ending so much sweeter and poignant. It was so moving. Honestly everything was so great, the cast, characters, visuals, story, music, etc. I loved this series.

For those that wish to compare and contrast it to Story of Yanxi Palace, as if the shows were rivals, don't let that make you miss out on a great historical drama that is Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace. This was a unforgettable series. Brilliant.

Zhou Xun
okcomputer6623 May 2019
I am going to be honest. The writing for this show veers toward soap opera-like at times. But Zhou Xun is sublime. Amazing amazing actress.

Many of the actors on this show are wonderful too. I got totally wrapped up in this series. Highly recommend!

I am hooked
ronjan-1924511 July 2020
My very first Chinese series and it did not disappoint. Awesome acting, great cast. This show is so addicting. Great cinematography. It is quite long but worth it. This movie really got me interested in all the dynasties that ruled China, Korea and Japan. Countries that are very rich in heritage and history. It makes me want to travel to all these countries, too bad Covid19 is everywhere. I want me some Ruyi.

Pure, Genuine Acting
radianaltair29 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I usually watch American sci-fi action movies and rarely watch Chinese drama as for me, the acting are really wooden, the content usually fill with logical faults, and the only tolerable point is the pretty faces of actors and actresses.

This movie indeed changes my perspective.

Zhou Xun, 3 times best actress, shows Ula Nara underneath strengths - gentle yet strong-willed, resourceful yet noble-minded, and her great love and reliance on the King's love - all that distinct her from other's concubines. Wallace Hou indeed improves from his previous movie - always being warm charming prince, especially in the later part of the movie. That is just the main couple, the casts are really excellent bringing the character to the audiences.

The movie has a lot of scene with thousand of actors for the accession of the King and Queen, the King's death, or Mulan hunting or how the king goes out of his palace... Moreover, many of Qing dynasty's tradition, from ritual to how people greet each other, to food to the clothing is incredibly detailed in the movie, shows China's way and culture richness at the peak of its power then.

About the storyline and character development, I feel that this has been surprisingly well done. All characters have their motive in doing their actions. Fuca Langhua fight for her family, Jin Yuyan loves her Prince and marry the King for him... And Ruyi, she is the most noble, never being cruel to other, always love and hope the best for her king. The King, having power for so long changes him. I mean he is the last boss! Audience watch a harem movie and think that it is a fight between wifes, but it is actually a chessboard created by the King. Everybody has to guess his idea and obey him, which actually makes him always suspect others' motive and expect others' obedience all the time. As he said, he is all alone, but it is his own choice.

Ruyi is not Zhenhuan, Ruyi is Ruyi
filbert_dick14 November 2018
Although it is a sequel to the brilliant Zhen Huan Zhuan, Ruyi is different. Liu Lianzi took us on a different perspective here. I'll make it simple, Zhen huan used her head, but Ruyi used her heart. Both are completely different, but equally amazing. Not mentioning the costume, sets, bgm, and the casts, they are purely amazing. If you're not intrigued with Chinese history, at least Zhou xun's acting will hook you up to episode 87. Amazing drama! Embark yourself on an emotional rollercoaster ride, I promise it's a journey of a lifetime!

Nothing should be expected
gouoid23 August 2022
It's packaged like a three-star Michelin, but it's actually bad to eat. It's worse than McDonald's. The bad guys are so bad that there's no logic to it. The emperor acted like a gangster.

Great acting, plots are in depth, meaningful and moral values
guangpingxx11 March 2021
As a Chinese viewer who have watched lots of Qing Dynasty harem dramas, the main female lead are always portrayed to undergo a malicious change to evolve into a 'strong, capable and victorious' character in the end. Zhen Huan had casted away her love for Emperor Yongzheng and Yun Li, and only became the Empress Dowager for 'feeling safe'; while Wei Ying Luo can easily be summarized by a single word, which is 'revenge'. Falling in love with Fucha Fuheng or becoming the Imperial Noble Consort wasn't her initial motive either.

We have been so used to the concept in these dramas that to succeed, one must 'cast away our pure original heart, and embrace the dark side in us', while at the same time these dramas also portray that climbing up the peak of the haram is equivalent to as 'achieving success'. But is that the real case?

Ru Yi clearly knows that she CAN choose this path that'll lead her to success and prosperity but she refused to, as she still persists and held on to her true self. The beauty and essence of the drama lies exactly at here: A constant reminder that in the materialistic world where succeed is measured by the power and wealth you hold, it is still a façade and not as important as to holding on to your 'true self'.

I personally believe that a good drama doesn't necessarily mean that it should have a fast exciting pace, superb acting skills or flawless editing, but rather the moral values that it brings. This drama impacted me very, very deeply and changed my views on life. Of course, I dare not say that RRLITP brings out the best moral values, but it definitely embodies the Chinese idiom: Blooming from piles of mud, yet the lotus flower remains unstained.

Signing off here, and I hereby wish everyone a good day. Enjoy the series!

Review for Ruyi's Royal Love In The Palace
joelwong-1213529 October 2021
It is a very good quality story and it is also very touching. Even though it is the opposite of Story Of Yanxi Palace, both dramas are very nice to watch.

I can't stop watching **SPOILERS**
euni3329 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I used to watch clips on YouTube and then I started watching on Viki. Turns out they're showing it on Prime. Yeeee Haaaaa! So I'm watching it there and even if I've watched it on YT I am still watching it over. And over. What amazes me is the make-up. All those old ladies are really young women in real life. Vivien Wu is the one that I was so totally shocked when I learned who she played. I shook my head until I thought it was going to come off. I could not believe it. This is a great series to watch. I love learning history and about other cultures. This is perfect. The costumes and jewelry are excellent. But for me the most incredible thing about this series is the make-up. If you get a chance, watch it. You won't be disappointed.

**EDIT**

Okay, I like most things about this show especially when Ruyi gets back at everyone who tried to screw her over. What I don't like is how stupid the emperor is. It's almost like he couldn't think beyond the p*$$y. He loved Ruyi but still kept believing she was evil when it was his first wife who was evil. He just could not think or believe in Ruyi. And by the time he finally realized how stupid he was, it was too late. I do want to say that the difference between this show and the Yanxi Palace show is that the evil consort in Ruyi's Love got what she had coming to her. And the one in Yanxi Palace got the emperor. Although, you could say he got what he deserved for being such an effing idiot.

I do love watching the clips where all them bit*&s get whats coming to them.

I rate the whole series a 10 but I rate the stupidity of the emperor a 5.

Stellar romance and abundant Chinese history lesson
dzhaviland30 June 2021
This was my second Chinese series, the first was Empresses in the Palace which was also good but not the caliber of this series. I am now on my 3rd rewatch in less than 6 month. I watched the first time as a 5 day binge watch. The actress who plays Ruyi elevates this series to a high caliber. She is totally believable, expresses more with her eyes than most famous actors today and you are drawn into her life and loves as if you are there.

The costumes, sets and majority of supporting characters are also very good with standouts from the actors who play Jia, junge lin, "Linger". There is sometimes a bit of melodramatic acting and of course many of the minor plots are pretty unbelievable but that is typical of all soap style series regardless of country of origin. Watching this made me delve into ancient Chinese history and I came away very impressed by their respect for spirituality, elders, ancestors, education and beauty in all forms, art, poetry, nature, etc.

I was especially fascinated with life in the harem and the Forbidden City. The slaves and eunuchs were basically expendable and had literally no chance to elevate their station unless they were exceptionally beautiful or talented in some way. The women of the harem led an especially difficult life as they all vied for the attention of one man, could never leave the city and their actions affected not only their birth family but their entire clan. One misstep could result in the disgrace and ruin of the whole clan or tribe. Absolutely fascinating dramatization of a part of history most people know little about and an introduction to the history of a world power. You can see how and why they became so powerful, with their attention to detail, respect for authority(obviously now under communism/dictator rule they have no choice), work ethic and education.

Since then I've watched other Chinese history series and movies and none so far have come close to the excellence of this one. I highly recommend it. Please note I only took a point off for the sometimes implausible storylines and melodrama but to be fair, in many ways they added positively to the series as a whole so if I was grading using a standard of a series that stays with you and you want to re-watch again and again, it's a 10.

Stunning
bcmantonya21 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was my first experience with Chinese drama TV. I caught snippets of it on YouTube, then found the entire show. I couldn't stop watching. The show itself was done so well... the costumes, the sets, the actors, showcasing the beauty of China. But beyond the obvious phenomenal acting, it was the dedication to detail and weaving of an emotionally heart wrenching love story inside real history of the Qing Dynasty. I can't tell you how many times I stopped watching an episode to look up the history of this period of time. Read about Qianlong and Empress of the Nala clan. Read about the different women in the harem, all the royal children, the Empress Dowager. Even the painter from Italy and the leaders from the border tribes. So thrilling to watch it unfold, to learn what life in the Forbidden City was like. Watch how China fought wars, how it tried to coordinate the military and tribal officials with who was selected in the harem. Obviously, there was drama in the harem, people fighting for power and positions. It got downright visious at times. But the character development was amazing, and the storyline were riveting. I can't wait to watch it again!

My favorite asian drama so far!
angelx_cute0826 October 2021
During the earlier episodes, I thought Wallace was underwhelming but oh boy, I changed my mind when he started his "I am the selfish emperor mode". He was a really effective villain. I hated his character. I don't understand those who didn't like his acting. He did a good job as a depressed, confused, lonely, abusive, selfish emperor. The best actor awards for me would go to the actors playing Jia and Yan Wan. They are amazing! In fact, all of them are amazing. What an outstanding cast! Everyone played their role perfectly. Ruyi, Rong Pei, Dowager, Consort Hui, the villain eunuch, etc - all of them are memorable. It's a beautiful drama albeit depressing. This perfectly showcases the emotions and life of a woman inside the palace of that era - empty and all consuming. I enjoyed Yanxi because of the lighter and comedic tones but in terms of quality and cast, I'd say Ruyi's Royal Love in the palace wins.

Ruyi Zhuan Detailed Review ( SPOILER ALERT!!! )
ambroseaarondavid16 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ruyi Zhuan _______________________________________________

Criteria No: 1 Story, Story line and characters ----------------------------------------- The concept and the story was great on how a woman and her mingling relationship with a man she once knew, how she was trying to stand behind the walls of the forbidden city, between scheming and hatred. I loved how the story and the characters had a progression as the story line went on. But I still do not like the fact that the big brain Jia is made dumber to put an end to her story. To be honest this drama is not for people who hate tragic endings. ( I loved tragic endings)

______________________________________________

Criteria No: 2 Acting ----------------------------------------- Zhou Xun - She was incredible and all of her hidden emotions can be seen in her eyes, '' You dumb, selfish fool.''

Wallance Huo - He wasn't bad at all but I thought he was rather convincing in his role. ( I guess that's why everyone wanted to beat the hell out of him)

Qi Xiang - I loved her acting and she was brilliant at her role and loyal maid who speaks out and question when she thinks someone is in the wrong.

Xi Zhilei - She nailed her role she made us understand how devoted she was to her clan lord.

Vivian Wu - She was really good at her role showing a woman who is ruthless and savage at times. She really knows to punch where it hurts in an argument.

______________________________________________

Criteria No: 3 Videography, Editing and BGM -------------------------------------------- This deserves a lot of praise as well I loved the BGM ( especially the sad ones and festive ones). There was a lot of legendary shots and I can see a lot of money, I mean a huge amount of money was spent on. They gorgeously took shots and there were proper editing and lighting to make the scenes give you that mood. They did make the scenes too dull nor vibrant.

______________________________________________

Criteria No: 4 Makeup, Hairstyle, costumes, sets and details -------------------------------------------------------- I loved the costumes, I wished I had clothes like them. All the character had a good and more natural look and light makeup. Some times Jia 's hair gets really guge but it's okay I guess. The sets were great and they really paid attention to detail. Again a huge amount of money was spent.

_________________________________________________

Thanks for reading I think it was useful. : )
