This is a better one.
Patient4449 May 2020
Now I see many reviews that trash talk the movie, and we have to respect others' opinions, but I, as a huge horror fan can tell you it is far better than you'd expect.

The subject sleep paralysis/deprivation/demons/night terrors/ is one a tad bit less used in this genre and not exploited as much as say, slashers or zombies. So there is still some wiggle room here, parts of it that might seem new, fresh, that's why I make sure to always put an eye on such productions, see what the latest is all about. Surely enough, Awoken doesn't go too far from the subject, it's a swing and a hit I'd say, but I'm quite sure it had the potential for an out of the park kind of impact. As a horror and as a sleep deprivation movie it uses a lot of the clichees one might expect to find here, and I do believe they could have achieved a lot more if they tried a little originality as well, not just go for the sure thing.

Nevertheless, it is a decent effort, an OK movie, from the acting to directing, everything falls in place nicely. I liked it for my late night and I do recommend it to others.

Cheers!

This is such a refreshing change from the crop of screaming teen in a cabin kind of movies that seem to be popping out by the dozen.

The story is strong, the acting is mostly great, and the production is well thought out and implemented. There are perhaps one or two silly moments, but on the whole the movie comes together well and is a good watch.

A popcorn thrilling movie
scenematica2 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Easy to follow, linear plot, suitable to be watched as entertainment.

Another exorcism movie with a cliche story. Plothole? yes. Recommended to watch? depend on your purpose of watching, throw all of high expectations, sit still, enjoy this as a tale and watch.

Ultimately a bland foray into the horror genre...
paul_haakonsen15 October 2020
I had the chance to sit down and watch the 2019 movie "Awoken" here in 2020. And with the movie's cover, it being a horror movie and it being a movie I hadn't already seen, of course I found the time to sit down and watch the movie from writers Alan Grace and Daniel J. Phillips.

Well, for a horror movie, then "Awoken" was just bland. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is a bad movie. Not at all. The movie was actually, in fact, watchable and entertaining enough, but it was just a bland movie experience, that offered nothing new to a seasoned horror veteran such as myself.

The storyline in "Awoken" was fair enough. There were some good enough aspects to it that made it worthwhile watching. But at the same time, the storyline also had some rather mundane and generic aspects to it. Especially the predictability that lurked over the movie was just holding it down.

Now, I will say that the aspect of sleep deprivation has been used countless other times in other thrillers and horror movies, but it actually worked out well enough for the plot as written by Alan Grace and Daniel J. Phillips.

The acting in "Awoken" was good, and the actors and actresses carried the bland storyline a great long way with their individual and collective performances on the screen. I wasn't familiar with the talents in the movie, so that was definitely something that appealed to me.

For a horror movie, then the special effects used in "Awoken" were adequate. They weren't outstanding or particularly memorable, nor were they effects that make you go "wow!" I think that having made more use of high end special effects would have lifted up the overall feel of the movie in a much needed direction.

If you enjoy horror movies, give "Awoken" a chance. Mind you, this is by no means a movie that will rock your world, nor will it revolutionize the horror genre as we know it. I am rating director Daniel J. Phillips's 2019 movie a mediocre five out of ten stars. It was watchable, albeit predictable, but this is hardly a movie that will make you sit down to watch it a second time.

Start by turning off the lights if you want them to sleep
SBenoit516 July 2023
Everyone in this movie seems to have trouble sleeping. "You look tired, you should go to sleep". "You need some sleep, you should stop for the day."

The concept of the film is that specialists are trying to help some people with sleep disorders (or something like that), but they're keeping them in a room brightly lit by office fluorescents 24 hours a day... But who the hell could sleep in such an environment?

The script definitely lacks realism. The film is riddled with nonsensical little details, as if no one had taken the time to revise the whole thing before launching the project. For example, when a VCR is turned off, the screen turns blue, it doesn't switch to a snowy screen (that's when a TV channel loses it's signal).

It's obvious that the actors are inexperienced, but you feel they've been given a chance, and they try their best.

The bad reviews are well-founded, but it's still a little film to watch on TV when there's nothing else on... It's not a complete failure.

Creepy topic, how much do you care for a loved one?
movie_ape22 October 2020
An above average horror that had enough tension and creepy stuff to keep me entertained. The twists were interesting and the lore of the demon possession was done well enough.

Some visuals were done well and overall this film presented itself well. The protagonist takes up medical school to try to help her brother, who can't sleep at all. She is motivated to help, but there are twists along the way that kept this interesting for me. The acting was good across the board, as the music was too.

Not understanding why people are complaining about demonic possession, spiritual beliefs, exorcisms, etc. It is what it is. All stories that pull from the demonic world are based on spiritual matters -- that's the point -- so I don't know why people are complaining about that. It is a movie after all so treat it like a sci-fi?

6/10 worth it and better than the rated score suggests.

UTTERLY DISSAPOINTING
movieguy300024 July 2020
When I first saw the trailer I was genuinely excited but what a huge let down. Not overly surprised at another poor attempt at an indie Aussie horror film. The story is weak and not interesting at all. The subject of fatal sleep insomnia could have been something to really great if executed well. Actors were mediocre, characters were ordinary and it was so slow for a supernatural film I wanted to fall asleep. It's shot restively well. Dont waste your time, 2 stars for getting the film made and for some great locations.

Complaining about religion in this movie? 🤣
davebussard10 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Come on people, it's a movie about someone that's demon possessed! You don't think religion should be involved? Maybe you should give the demon possessed person Ambien? Should they go out in the sun to get extra vitamin D?! LOL this was actually better than most movies like this. They were only a couple things that should've been left out. Overall really good for a supernatural horror thriller. Most of them suck.

What is it about?
sergey-zotchev8 May 2020
Is it paid for by the Church? By Satanist? Whatever, this is a real bad piece of action, full of cliches and religeous BS. Seen so many of this type of movies before, capitalizing on the original "Exorcist". Nothing new, bad acting, average special effects, boring....

Deserve more than 6.
AngryChainsaw20 October 2020
Excellent horror film, perhaps one of the best this year, with the addition of some good achievements, which in itself are not the full horror genre (such as: Anthebelum, Underwater, Get Out, Follow Me, etc.) as is case with this movie. I think that director would make a much better movie if he had more money at his disposal, or a better producer. In keeping with the cast and casting, it could have been much better, but that's what's expected in his upcoming movie's. This isn't "Countdown" or "A scary stories to tell in the dark" and least of all, a similar Popcorn movie... Any commendation for this achievement with such limited resources and resources!!!

Most reviews are fake, I've seen much worse but it's not good Warning: Spoilers
Production is higher/better than a lot of cheap horror movies, but so much was lame. Acting wasn't terrible but the script isn't great, and the plot was poorly executed - the idea had great potential but it flaked out. Giving it a one or two really isn't fair. I have seen so, so much worse. But a 9 or 10 is fake.

I was torn between giving it a 3 or a 4. Initially rated it 3, but just watched a movie so much worse that I decided it's worth a 4 just for production values and acting had some merit. I finished it, that's something. But a 6 is extremely generous or maybe they're just stupid, and anybody says 8, 9, or 10 is a liar, or maybe really, really stupid and has never watched movies.

My biggest problem was with stupid, unreasonable behavior by allegedly intelligent medical interns.

There are 3 patients with sleep disorders in a secret/forgotten basement of a medical university being illegally treated by a doctor with unapproved drugs. They are all in the same room, with an observation window. Only one is a woman and she has 'night terrors'. She is obviously afraid of the new patient, the brother of the female lead CJ a medical intern. He has fatal familial insomnia and their mom had it. He acts like he's possessed, sitting on the edge of the bed hunched over with the bones in his back pushing out, his eyes changed color - more than once - I guess nobody standing all around him noticed, he's murmuring in an evil voice with an evil smile - all of which his sister shrugs off, looking confused, oh well. The female patient grabs CJ, crying hysterically, she is terrified and says she's scared and she wants to leave -but CJ basically shoves her back down on the bed and says 'you'll be fine once you get your meds' then leaves the room and LOCKS the door. So I guess that means the patients are at the mercy of whack a doo doctor & company, can't just walk out if they want to. If it had been me I would have walked out the room as soon as the door opened, and punched anybody who tried to stop me - this lady just whimpered and did nothing. The lady patient then climbs onto the back of a chair and puts a chain with a kind of noose around her neck, smiles and says in a demon voice "this is for you CJ" while CJ stands in the now open door and says NO! but otherwise has stopped in the doorway and never rushes to try and stop her from hanging herself, instead watches her step off the chair, shirks back and bursts into tears and then does absolutely nothing to stop her from strangling to death. Self hanging doesn't cause instant death. She doesn't even call for help, I'm not even sure she tells anyone immediately. Her crazy brother is sitting there like a grinning moron and there is another male patient in a bed in the room with headphones on who looks young and strong- he could have helped hold the woman up to avoid strangulation, but he has his back turned and CJ doesn't ask for help. Headphone guy (another review called him sleepy John Wick - I recognized who he meant as soon as I saw him) never says a word throughout the movie, but is usually awake and watching, but never does anything but stare with an unhappy expression.

Even later when they 'try' to leave to take the body out, the doctor and all 3 interns are prepared to go in the elevator with the stretcher, but they left Sleepy John Wick and possessed brother back in the room with chain nooses hanging off the ceiling.

Nobody tells anybody anything important, CJ sees an old VHS tape of her mother possessed and tearing pages out of a bible, when her brother does the exact same thing in exactly the same way - she doesn't act like there's any connection. Even after she sees him muttering weird things and appears to make the lady with night terrors have a terrible dream & she jumps awake and starts crying and looking at him in fear - then begs to leave, CJ shrugs it off and never even told anybody she wanted to leave. Who does that? Even after he grabs Cj by the throat and says LL KILL YOU in a demon voice, she takes no action. Seeing him muttering incantations in an ancient language, probably latin in a demonic voice, she can't put 2 and 2 together. Even though it was obvious he's dangerous, she leaves another patient alone in the room with him. I mean really pretty much everything is her fault for being so stubbornly stupid, irresponsible and selfish.

Also I have to wonder why a room with 3 sleep deprived patients who may show erratic behavior has 3 chain nooses hanging off the ceiling. I can't think of any reason hanging chains looped around to create a slide noose like a dog's choke chain would be hanging off the ceiling.

The elevator won't work, the staircase has collapsed, there is no phone out, cell phones don't work, and nobody knows that place exists - how did she get out?

NOT A TEN, not a 5, no more than a 4 - but at least a 3, I mean hey it's no 'Ouija Shark' 1 star.

Bad writing strikes again...
ario-3411930 May 2020
As the film crawls along with cliche dialogues, illogical decisions and bad jump scares in snail pace. Nothing good in this one, except for the actors who actually are okay, given the material they have to work with, which earns this film those two stars from me.

Great exorcism movie, surprised!
MovieQween-336225 August 2020
I was really pretty surprised with this movie in the best way! I really like supernatural possession movies especially with a decent story... The acting done by the main female lead was pretty great! Good story, rightly paced, scary moments and a little twist towards the end. Highly recommend if you like these types of horror movies! Definitely underrated I'd say!

Poor to rotten
killercharm25 August 2020
Basically a nowhere fast movie where nothing happens. A woman is worried to distraction over her brother who hasn't slept in days. Weeks, even. She fears for his life, but some - those in the know, fear for his soul. And his life. And their lives. Apparently if you don't sleep for a monthish a foreign demon gets ya. This could have been scary good, but not this time.

Christians stealing pop culture for relevance!!
bryce-179347 September 2020
WARNING!! This is a Christian movie POSING as horror.

Just like modern Christian music, this movie simply emulates pop culture as a vehicle for its "god" message. So tap your feet if you like...but it is a Trojan horse.

Good atmospheric horror.
billyolk9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't expecting the blend of found-footage cinematic storytelling. LOVE possession movies, but to work they need to have interesting characters and chilling atmosphere, luckily this doesn't disappoint with a family drama at the centre of the conflict. Good performances and production design. Most possession films these days are set in old family homes and estates, like the conjuring saga. I enjoyed the different take. Also don't google the disease, the videos are pretty frightening.

maybe some lack of free spirit
ops-525358 May 2020
The horror genre are divine and rich on genre specialities. ffi is an actual dreadful disease that eventually will kill and therefore food for the filmindustry. i do though feel a bit breezy in my ears when excorcism becomes the last effort. a genetic malfunction, sounds to many religous people like the word of the devil and it shall out. and that is the main point in this film.

production are mainly onelocation where the meds can observe through mirror glass, its infact a unisex pasient room, that made my browse raise as im a authorised medical nurse. but sick they are and there are some sound shock that may stop your heart, but no more than average.

actresses in nurses clothing are a beautiful view, so a surplus it is,but nevertheless, its a film for the newbies to horror, at best its on the average on the grumpy old mans scale. a small recommend

Hated the main character so much I *had to* write a review
ElenaKerry7 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was actually not bad, if it wasn't for the horrible main character, I'd give it a solid 7 but I hated her so much I was compelled to write this review.

The main character, KJ is so stupid, borderline intellectually disabled, it's unbelievable she survived till the end of the movie.

While trying to perform an exorcism the first time, not only did she not prepare the page she had to read from, but she was reading slower than a first-grader studying English as a second language.

During the read-off battle with the "bad guy", Rob, instead of trying to read the exorcism as fast as possible, she was literally waiting for Rob to finish reading his release-the-demon-from-his-human-prison spell. What is this? A turn-based RPG?

I was rooting for her to somehow die but unfortunately she survived. Guess her stupidity got her what she deserved in the end.

P. S. Apart from incredibly stupid, she was also incredibly annoying, her personality was absolutely terrible.

Plot Holes Abound!
spookyrat131 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1. A very well - resourced basement hospital ward facility on a university campus with power and lighting and no - one else knows anything about it? Yeah right!

2 The main characters just cruise down into it, never bothering to check for potential exits, fire escapes etc. And BTW, when they find themselves locked into said facility, nobody, unbelievably, seems to have a mobile phone.

3 Who's providing all the food, general nursing to the three patients? None of the 4 medical staff we see appear to do anything except write a note in the odd book and watch videos.

4 The so - called secret compartment with the video camera and tapes is conveniently discovered virtually the minute the 2 women walk into the room.

5 Hilariously even though the very first tape they watch incriminates their senior colleague Dr Robert straight up, they do nothing at all about it, though the obvious thing to do, would be to both confront and question him.

6 This rather stupid acquiescence on both their parts, even extends to them both happily accepting that the lift is actually faulty and Robert has actually contacted authorities about having them extracted from the basement facility. They're not in the least suspicious. LOL!

7 During the lockdown stage of the movie, when more discoveries are made and further videos are watched, Robert just seems to disappear from the facility. He's offscreen for some 20 - 30 minutes and no one seems to care or be curious, even though other characters are up to their necks in deep doggy do - do.

8 And what happened to that third patient, the male one who never spoke? He just seems to be completely forgotten about. Why bother even sticking him in the movie?

This is another of those hopeful indi type, low budget horror features, that have an underlying reasonably interesting premise, but then try to achieve success on the back of some really lazy, screen writing. This results in Awoken being more distracting, than frightening, despite some more than competent acting on the part of the cast. A disappointment!
