The show's title in each season's opening credits have progressively reflected the state of decay in the world, it is best seen at the end of the credits when the title "The Walking Dead" appears; the letters appear more decayed and faded with each season and starting in season six the letters become stained with blood. However with season nine the letters in the show's title have some green coloration in the areas of the letters that were previously faded and decayed, reflecting that the survivors are starting to rebuild and restore civilization.
Creating a charter isn't the only way that Michonne is honoring Carl's legacy. She also has a small plaid wrap around one of her dreads, which is from a piece of Carl's shirt.
Scott Wilson, who played Hershel Green, died the day prior to this episode's airing at age 76, due to complications from leukemia. He was honored with a title card at the end of the episode.
In addition to a new opening title sequence, Katelyn Nacon (Enid) and Tom Payne (Paul 'Jesus' Rovia) have been added as series regulars.
The episode title 'A New Beginning' is the same title as the comic story arc that follows after the 'All Out War' story arc against Negan.
