Mark Kermode has an encyclopedic knowledge of horror films, his favourite genre.

We get a glimpse of what makes a horror film, the basic ingredients needed for a successful scary film.

Kermode goes through some of the classic scenes, breaking them down such as the opening of Suspira. Making scene by scene comparisons between Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs. Looking back at clips that inspired later films. How a jump scene from Psycho inspired a scary jump scene in Exorcist 3.

Kermode goes through the classic but also unknown films such as Prevenge.

It did feel a bit superficial, almost mildly diverting. Maybe I knew that Kermode could make a 12 hour mini series on the subject of horror films and would still have more to say.
