Territorial Imperative
atlasmb10 January 2024
Over the years, we have seen the sets for TV game shows become more automated. The availability of smart walls, and now floors, has changed the genre. This game show uses a 9X9 grid to create 81 spaces on the floor, each occupied by a contestant. Players randomly selected, get to challenge adjoining players. The concept of 81 players battling for a grand prize of $250,000 is appealing. Each player has a category of expertise, and when you challenge someone, you must play in their category.

A challenge consists of a head-to-head matchup, but players play against the clock. Each gets 45 seconds of time, and they take turns trying to identify items that flash on a screen. If your clock runs down first, you lose and the conqueror gets your space on the floor.

Besides the big prize going to the person who wins the 80th match, $20,000 is awarded to the player who occupies the most space on the floor at the end of each episode.

There are various strategies at play. Do you challenge someone in their category of expertise or wait for someone to challenge you? If you challenge someone and win, you assume their category. Do you like that category? If you challenge someone, your clock begins counting down first. Do you want to lay low and use the time between episodes to bone up on your new category?

In the first two episodes, they played 7 or 8 matches and the choices became more complex as the game went on. As for the matchups, they are entertaining.

It had potential

Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this advertised it looked like something I would enjoy. After watching the first episode I was hooked. I do agree with the review about the randomizer not being so random, but it was still exciting to watch. I enjoyed the categories that were selected by the players seeing things like Brunch and Bugs was unexpected.

I became more interested as the episodes progressed and the players began expanding their territories. Then we came to the end of episode 3 and there were 58 players of the original 81 still left on the floor. I began watching episode 4 and thought I missed something so went back to re-watch 3. No, I was not mistaken, as 4 began they only had 24 players on the board and the territories where now dominated by players who we never saw play. This was such a disappointment as part of the fun of watching the show was getting to know the players as they won and lost their spaces.

I had hope for this show but was very disappointed.

UPDATE:

I was watching on HULU and after going back toward the end of the season they updated the episodes and 4 is actually showing what was originally missing.

Only seen the 4 released episodes
ajelliott-386695 February 2024
I absolutely love the concept. Yes, Rob Lowe may be phoning it in, but he's still better than most modern hosts (except Higgins). People complain about the pace, but I think it's perfect. Great balance of down time to game time. I hate too much interview time for contestants, but this show doesn't do that.

I agree about the "Randomizer" not being as random as they try to portray, but that's what you should expect. All entertainment has a goal to entertain. Not mad about that.

When it comes to game shows, I care about a fun watch that I can engage in. That's this show. Can't wait for the next episode.

Clever and patient contestants skilled in using subterfuge have a distinct advantage in this new game show The Floor
Ed-Shullivan10 January 2024
Wow! What a great new show which commences with having.a welcomed 81 contestants stand on a floor grid with each contestant owning their specific category which varies from bugs, to cereals, to technology categories and anything else that can be categorized which is basically unlimited.

The Floor which uses two contestants to battle against each other with one contestant winning their opponents share of the grid floor. Strategically the viewing audience can witness how one or more contestants may become vulnerable as grid spaces are won or lost and the contestant who wins the most grid spaces during the weekly game also wins a $20,000.00 prize with the last (wo)man standing winning the Grand prize of $250,000.00.

Mathematically speaking we can see that the weekly prize value of $20,000.00 and the Grand prize value of $250,000.00 which will take several weeks to eventually be awarded indicates that this game show is not about the producers giving away millions of dollars or neither cars or luxury vacations. No, this game show is more about a competitive game show where the audience can play along guessing as the two contestants battle each other to win the other contestants grid(s) that they currently own. The two battling contestants start off with a thirty (30) second clock which only descends with a wrong answer, and a three (3) second penalty if a contestant passes on a clue. The contestant whose clock goes from 30 to 0 seconds first loses their match and sent packing home.

If you win you continue, and if you lose you go home. The host is well known film and Tv personality. Rob Lowe who takes a backstage to the contestants whose backgrounds are as diverse as the catgories they are competing for. This game is like Jeopardy with its categories but on steroids since Jeopardy has three (3) contestants and The Floor commences each new game with eighty one (81) contestants.

I give this new and exciting game show a perfect 10 IMDb rating and it's been a long time since.a successful game show such as Jeopardy, Let's Make a Deal, and/or. The Price Is Right came along.

A Fun and Fast-Paced Game Show with a Twist
drakeking119 January 2024
If you are looking for a new game show to watch, you might want to check out The Floor on Fox. The show, hosted by the charming Rob Lowe, is a clever and exciting competition that tests the contestants' knowledge and strategy on a variety of topics. The show's format is simple but effective: each contestant claims expertise in a certain topic, such as "Dogs," "80s TV," or "Nepo Babies." They then face off in duels, where they have to identify items from images or fill in the blanks. The catch is that they only have 45 seconds on their clock, and the only way to stop it is to answer correctly. The winner of the duel takes over the loser's space on the floor, a 9x9 grid where they stand. The goal is to expand their territory and eliminate their opponents. The last contestant standing wins $250,000, and the contestant with the most squares at the end of each episode wins $20,000.

The Floor is a game show that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as you watch the contestants try to outsmart and outguess each other. The duels are fast and fun, with clues ranging from easy to hard, and topics from obscure to popular. The show also adds some elements of reality TV, as the contestants interact with each other and reveal their personalities and strategies in side interviews. The host, Rob Lowe, adds some humor and charisma to the show, as he comments on the duels and chats with the contestants.

The Floor is a game show that is both entertaining and educational, as you learn new facts and trivia along the way. It is also a game show that is different from the typical ones, as it uses visual clues and a unique scoring system. The Floor is a game show that is worth watching, as it offers a fresh and fun twist to the genre.

A new exciting game show with hopeful more seasons to come
jaredbrady-416573 March 2024
Waited to make a review till the season was fully complete and man it did not disappoint! A fun concept with everyone having a topic they know best in and battling it out with others and their expert topic is a fun and refreshing new concept!

It's also really intriguing the contestants take the others topic if they beat them as well making it difficult or similar advantage in their favor!

The contestants they had were all great and different and added to the excitement that this show had

I wasn't a fan of the winner of season 1 but it doesn't take away to such a fun show and something reality TV/Game shows have been desperately needing.

Fun game show!

Warning: Spoilers
The Floor was a very fun and interesting game show. When I first saw it pop up ion Hulu, my husband wasn't really sure about it. But I insisted on giving it a chance and after watching the first episode, we were hooked and he agreed it was much different than he anticipated. Now, I will say if the producers are going to have a session 2, a few things should be tweaked. One issue is the is to much of a delay between when a person either gives their correct answer or passes and the next clue which we felt was a disadvantage to the contestants. The other was that we felt like some of the topics didn't really make sense with the clues. For example and this maybe a spoiler, someone is suppose to be proficient in the Simpsons. The clues were pictures of the actual actors who did voices on the Simpsons instead of showing their actual Simpson character and guessing who it was. That just seemed to make more sense. Anyway, it still was a fun show to watch with our family and of course we loved Rob Lowe!!

Interesting concept but highly flawed
critic-97-41765729 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed watching the show because it is actually quite fun trying to answer the options that are presented. There is a lot of strategy involved as well as a lot of chance. The biggest problem with the show is that people who stand there doing nothing can make it to the end and win. There were so many contestants that were incredible and really deserved to be competing for the jackpot. Ultimately, the flaw really takes away from the show. I say this because I just finished watching the last episode and it completely changed my impression of the entire game. I originally loved the concept, but the way it concluded was wholly unsatisfying.

A big change I would recommend is for any contestant who wins a quarter of the floor becomes automatically protected so they can compete at the end. They could easily reshuffle the floor to accommodate this adjustment. The finale would be made up of the top four contestants, then get to battle it out for the final prize. That would make it so much more interesting as the remaining players are more likely the most effective players who then compete against each other.

It's really unsatisfying to have someone who stands there most of the game win against someone who has had tons of success but is likely experiencing elevated stress from constant play. It's just not a fair result.

Film crew gave away the winner

Warning: Spoilers
After watching I knew whoever was in the final two the person on Rob's left was going to win. In the beginning credits, he looked at the left and said you won $250,000. So please be careful when you're showing that because immediately I knew the girl was going to win when it came down to the final two. It was a great show and a great format, and I loved watching all the contestants, but disappointed at the final when it was spoiled for me. It's nice to see new ideas for game shows instead of the same old ones. I think Rob Lowe was a great host and I loved seeing all the contestants and their categories.

Fun but needs improvement
katie19779 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
We love trivia shows and had a lot of fun as a family watching this. The categories are eclectic and Rob Lowe did a fantastic job hosting. The problem for us was that the format gave an unfair advantage to the contestants who were picked late in the competition. There were contestants who won multiple rounds in a row accumulating a lot of floor space for someone to come along and take it all in 1 round. I suppose having a category that is on the tougher side helps a contestant stay in the game as no one would want to challenge them. But, the format just seemed off and not fair for such a large cash prize. Having said that, we would definitely watch a Season 2 if the game is updated to be more fair.

Great show to watch with the whole family
sublime053-570-7260496 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This show is great, I hope it stays on. The worst part is waiting a week between episodes. My family loves to play along during the games. I swear I'd be an awesome contestant!! Looking forward to new episodes every week. At first I was kind of iffy on the show, but now that some people are being eliminated you can see where having a decent strategy pays off. Unless the randomizer picks someone right next to that person.

The contestants that have been on stage so far have all been pretty likable too. I'm rooting for Steve to win the whole thing. It was very nice what he did for Stephanie in episode 4.

Interesting concept, but...
epark5124 January 2024
The game play itself seems very interesting and different from most other game shows.

However, the format of the show was mind-numbingly long and drawn out. As typical for most shows nowadays, they inserted too much dialogue in between the question rounds along with unnecessary sound effects and graphics. I franky got bored. Thankfully I recorded it, so I could just fast forward through all the ridiculous drivel.

If they want people to stay tuned, they need to replace all the manufactured drama filler content with many more rounds of questions per hour, it would make it so much more enjoyable to watch.

Really Enjoyed Playing/Watching most of the show, but had a problem(s) that needs fixed!
spoofrice113 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The show is a lot of fun, as the categories are so random compared to most Trivia shows. Things like: Junk Drawer Items, Fruits, Sports Mascots, and Birds are kind of unique for a battle show. And It is fun to try to say the answers faster than the contestants.

Also, neat that each episode winner got $20,000, and not just the final winner (which the end isn't real great, and was pretty lame/disappointing).

Hopefully in Season 2 they fix a couple of things that made the show not so good...

  • When Nick won/got challenged 5 strait times and won them all, until the final battle of that show, he got $0. You should have 1 round after winning where you are safe and can't be challenged, or the randomizer won't pick someone that touches that spot (there were challengers that hadn't played yet that weren't touching his space).

Just not right that he won over & over and got nothing and a guy with 1 win won $20,000. Hopefully they will change that next year. At least others with multiple wins and a bunch of spots won money for end of shows unlike him.

A solution would be to give people like $2,000 per win, so people being aggressive and challenging others (usually at a disadvantage) get rewarded for that.

  • Also, getting stuck with a category after winning without a way to get rid of it doesn't seem right. Something that only specific people would know (like fashion icons) is dumb. There should be a "Reward Category pool". So if you beat someone and get a category that you know you have no chance to win, there is a way to get rid of it. You would be able to get a Bonus category that is available. Maybe you have to win 2 or 3 battles to be able to trade yours out for something that you might have a better chance to compete in.

Otherwise I really enjoy The Floor!

90% buildup + 10%% Gameplay = 100% of me gone
onesnapboarding8 January 2024
I get the lights and the fun every day people playing. Not sure why we need to know the inside scoop on every player, especially the ones that lose right away. How hard would it be to move this faster and have a couple more rounds of players actually playing the game? Is it really that hard to come up with questions for this 'game'?

The premise is solid, the execution is mush. Advertisements and deep dives into people we really have no want or need to know about completely ruin what could have been a fun time for all.

I had a conversation with my wife about this show before she had seen an episode and I asked her to watch episode one and tell me what her grade would be. Her first sentence was, "When they finally played the game, I was in the other room doing something else."

Flawed game design that might have been rigged...
realityinmind2 March 2024
The season begins decent with random people being called upon and the players having the ability to continue playing or go back to the floor. But once you get a few shows in you will realize that the entire game is flawed by design. Here are the reasons why:

The Randomizer: it picks random people, but never chooses a person twice. This gives the players along the edges and in the corners the biggest advantage because the chances of them being chosen to play are minimized. You will realize this by the time you get to the last episode as one of the contestants in the corner is chosen to go into the final round, yet she only played ONE TIME before. And there are many players that made it to the end of the season having never played a single game, yet people who played and won some 10+ games are eliminated.

Gameplay (answer correctly or pass): If a person answers the question correctly then it is the other player's turn. But if they can't answer they will pass, lose 3 seconds, and have to answer before it is their opponent's turn. Because of this, most of the winners win because their opponents couldn't answer the questions and passed too much. So it is not a game by which the player who answers the most questions or knows the most trivia will win, but a game by which the person who passes the most loses. And the person who is never called upon by the Randomizer has the biggest advantage.

The clues: Who picks the order for clues? Because it is not random. The first few clues are always the most obvious, but the clues do not become progressively harder. Randomly at times a player will receive a very hard clue, pass, receive another very hard clue, answer it, then their opponent receives an easy clue... which leads me to --

Rigging: it seems rigged. When you watch a player pass 4 times on very hard clues, only for their opponent to receive easy clues every time, it is hard to believe that the questions are completely random. Not to mention, the players were not sequestered from each other or from the internet, so they were able to fraternize and study their topic each evening. This gave the players in the latter of the season more of an advantage, and even set the stage for the possibility that some players worked together to give a specific player more of a winning chance than others. If you watch the whole season you will be left wondering why a person holding a very large portion of the floor purposely chose a topic that they knew absolutely nothing about, against an opponent that very clearly knew something about the topic, and then passed over and over until they lost, giving their opponent the win with almost zero effort

Each episode the person with the most pieces of the floor wins $20k, and the person who wins at the end takes home an additional $250k. But the last two episodes were strung together as a "season finale" instead of being two individual episodes. This seriously makes me feel like they lost so many viewers towards the end they were not able to afford to give $20k to the winner of the 2nd to the last show.

Don't read this any further if you intend on watching the entire season --- Throughout the season there are multiple players that work very hard to progress... they don't pass, they play and win huge chunks of the floor. Then they lose to a person who played just one single game. This happens a lot towards the end of the season, with the final winner being a contestant that was situated in the corner and only played one time prior. This is so flawed... she didn't deserve to win, and in all honesty it looks like she was given the win, as her opponent just stopped answering questions and passed on everything after choosing a category that he knew nothing about.

The thing I complained about the most while watching the show was the narcissistic attitudes of majority of the women on the floor. They walked and talked with ridiculous levels of arrogance. One woman dressed and acted like she was a teenager. While a grandmother even said "am I hot?" right before the game began, thinking that she would distract her opponent. All of that arrogance was a huge distraction from the gameplay.

We watched all of the season, but decided we would not watch a 2nd season if it is made. Though I highly doubt it will be made because it seems like the producers ran out of money before the 1st season concluded.

Worst ending to a show ever
lookouthomeg3 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Not even Rob Lowe can save this terrible ending to a show. The winner was utterly undeserving and the ending was so unsatisfying. I wouldn't watch this show again even if Lowe did it again. Horrible premise and set up.the winner only competed three times. It was all about luck and nothing about skill. It was clearly all filmed in one day which is fine but the show had so many flaws. The show is all about luck when literally nothing else. If this show had some kind of qualified to where the winner wasn't completely lucky then it would be a lot more fun but as it stands this show is all luck and now skill.

Awful game with rigged rules
LipschitzLyapunov23 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Imagine winning 98 rounds all by yourself and then some guy wins one round to win it all. If you win more rounds, you should be given an extra time advantage. Or, if you have extra territory, you should also get more time. Furthermore, everything about this game is rigged towards people in single territories going for the biggest territory and then those same people will have to constantly defend their territory until they inevitably lose to some obscure clue. The smartest way to get the 20k is to get "chosen" at the last duel and win that. The finale hasn't come out yet, but I have a feeling that one of the single territories or Jocelyn would win it all by how rigged this game is.

Warning: Spoilers
I like this new take in a trivia game show. It is exciting and it is great for at home play. However, I do not like the perceived randomness of the so called Randomizer. Clearly the contestants are carefully chosen for the sake of drama and added excitement. Is the excitement welcomed? Yes. But I do believe it is unfair to the contestants be intentionally targeted. In fairness, I think "Being chosen randomly", should be just that - actually, and factually chosen RANDOMLY. Other than that, I think it has potential. I look forward to episode 2. And knowing what I know about The Randomizer, they will keep it dramatic and exciting, although, unfair for the contestants.

Room Temperature IQs Welcome Warning: Spoilers
I had a lot of hope for the concept of this show. I love trivia and trivia shows, but this is just a "name that picture" game. They literally put a picture of a writing pen on the screen so someone could answer "pen!"

The timer is inconsistent and will eliminate players who answer correctly and still have 2-3 seconds left on their time.

Speaking of time, The Floor loves to waste it. There is so much dead space between showdowns so we can hear cringe and corny dialogue from anyone with a tongue and a mouth hole.

Rob Lowe has some pretty poor chemistry with the cast and comes off as generally passé. He seems genuinely uncomfortable to be there and often seems to glaze over behind the eyes and say things a human being on autopilot would say.

If you like trivia I'd wait till the whole show is fully out and have your remote on standby so you can zoom through all the filler garbage and knock out all the trivia in about 3 hours.

Edit: All the "unhelpful" user ratings of my review only proves more that this show was made for dullards. Write your own review sticking up for the show if you disagree with me so hard. I'm not afraid of being the only correct person in a room, let alone the internet. Bite me.

Flawed and likely rigged
gamblor-2024513 February 2024
It's absolutely infuriating that when someone doesn't know an answer, the other person doesn't have to answer it. This is a tragic flaw. It essentially turns each showdown into a coin toss. The clues start very obvious, quickly turn obscure, and then flip back to obvious. Whoever happens to be unfortunate enough to get stuck with the first obscure clue loses several seconds by stumbling or passing and then it's over. That few seconds is all it takes to lose and they can get stuck in an endless loop of unknown clues until their time runs out and their opponent wins without having to answer anything.

This flaw makes the entire premise of the show pointless. They might as well just get up there, flip a coin, and whoever gets tails loses because how much you know means absolutely nothing. Nobody wins by answering more clues. They all win by default when their opponent can't answer or stumbles on a clue that they themselves don't have to answer. This would be fixed by simply having a contestant pass the question to the other contestant and having them stumble on it as well and then they're both even for both not knowing it. But nope, only one person gets punished.

This makes me really suspect the entire thing is rigged. They purposely throw in an obscure clue to the person they want to lose and by design it cannot be passed and hurt the chosen winner. There's no way anyone designed and implemented this game without realizing what's happening. This has to be purposely done to give guaranteed control of the outcomes. So it's either rigged or a coin toss. No knowledge required either way.

This show infuriates me
shanewang-516106 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This show infuriates me so much. The other reviewers are either being paid to write the reviews or they're really that clueless to the rampant and obvious flaws of this show.

There was one other review on this site that predicted correctly, two weeks before the finale that, Jacquelyn, the girl in the corner that is completely safe until the very last round, would win the game. Well my friends and I predicted that she would win as well by the fourth episode (or some other lucky chap in the corner).

1. Now comes the first dumb issue with this show. The game format and rules are horrendous.

1a. There is no reason to ever aim for bigger territory until the finale. If you lose, you get eliminated. If you win the territory, then all the other contestants would gun for you, so you'll have to continuously defend yourself in single elimination rounds over and over.

1b. There is no inherent advantage to winning rounds. Imagine having high blood pressure and winning 79 rounds, only for a guy to just win one round and take home the grand prize. People with over a certain number of territory should be immune from being picked by those who have not played yet. Or, maybe give a person who previously won rounds extra time for each round that they won. There needs to be some kind of seeding to ensure that we actually end up with people who are good in the finale instead of the mid-tier players we see.

1c. In around half the matchups, the loser lost because they skipped a few obscure questions and not because they were faster or more knowledgeable.

2. Lots of contestants were really awful in their very own category. If your own category were US states, country flags, capital cities, or geography, you would expect them to actually know where countries or capital cities are. It's either common knowledge or could be rote memorized between episodes.

3. The show producers and backstage people are colossally stupid.

3a. Never mind the stupid rules, the producers should not touch anything trivia-related ever again. I swear if they show an eggplant and someone says "aubergine" (which is how most people outside of the US call eggplants), the backstage people would be completely clueless. One of the contestants was shown chips, and she said... "chips" and they didn't accept her answer because it had to be "potato chips".

3b. There were rounds were the images were obviously AI-generated garbage that looked absolutely awful and indiscernable. The category would be animals, and there would be an AI-generated image of a giraffe with wings, flying in the sky. There's no way copyright is so tight that they couldn't find proper, real images of animals.

Not great
chantigarbs8 March 2024
It was a good concept, but really poorly executed. It seems unfair how the categories are shown and sometimes predictable what contestants are actually guessing. Some categories are super easy while others were ridiculously hard. Winning is basically determined on how quickly contestants answer and how quick they are on the behind-the-scenes to show the next photo. Boring to watch, I watched a couple of the first episodes, and then the last. It seems like they didn't do enough prep work to make this a functional show and put it to the test before airing. There are much better contestant shows out there.

Entertaining but can be improved
banelsen6814 March 2024
Rob Lowe is an interesting choice for host. It appears he was selected at the last minute and had no time to shave nor comb his hair. That's only the start of improvements that could be made should there be another season. It's hard to tell which contestant is answering questions as they are filmed from the side and at a distance. It also appears the time counter is still reducing while waiting for the next photo/illustration to appear. The scoring system needs more than a countdown - how about getting time back when the opponent passes and you answer correctly? Overall, it was kind of fun to watch the braggarts fail miserably being unable to succeed in their own area of "expertise".
