An intriguing debut.

It's a big and bold opening for Strangers. I was very impressed by this first episode, it was bold, dramatic, and beautifully made. It's not what I'd expected, having seen a few trailers.

I loved the Hong Kong setting, it have the show a very unique look, the buildings and culture looked tremendous.

It's overloaded with intrigue, and at this point I have no idea what's going on, or where we're headed, but this was great. 8/10

Episode 1.1

John Simm plays a Brit lost in Hong Kong, he cannot even find a mobile phone charger, in Hong Kong of all places.

Simm plays Professor Jonah Mulray, a lecturer talking about nations being imaginary and going to now Chinese ruled Hong Kong to identify the body of his wife Megan (Dervla Kirwan) killed in a car accident. Although the way the aftermath was filmed, it might not had been an accident.

Jonah soon discovers that Megan was married to David Chen (Anthony Chau-Sang Wong) for 20 years which explains why she kept popping back to Hong Kong every few weeks. Jonah had only been married to her for 5 years and somehow never visited Hong Kong until now.

So not only has Jonah found out his wife has died, he was not even legally married to her. Talk about being swallowed by a whale.

Megan also had a grown up daughter with David called Lau Chen (Katie Leung) who is involved in some student protests against some big business tycoon running to be chief executive of Hong Kong.

A slow opening episode more interested in showing its Hong Kong locations than actually bringing the story forward. By the end Jonah realises that his wife's death may had been no accident. Something that could had been done in less than half the time.
