Director Miguel Arteta requested Fred Armisen make his own version of June's face out of clay. Unfortunately, Fred's final product was deemed "too good" by producers, so the props department had to step in to make a worse version of June's face.
To achieve the look of the ocean stands, producers shot Maya and Julia on a green-screen in slow motion to achieve an underwater feel. Stunt-women then put on wigs and filmed the identical scene in an underwater tank to capture the motion of their hair. The hair was then put onto Maya and Julia's heads in post-production; all underwater environments were then added by the visual effects team.
The exterior of Oceanside was designed by the visual effects team and added in post. One of the inspirations was Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California.
A few of the shots of Oscar's journey to Oceanside were filmed in Griffith Park. The shot of Oscar walking through the rain was filmed at 3 a.m. during one of the coldest nights of the year.
June and Kase's scenes depicting the journey to Oceanside were filmed at Newhall Ranch in California.
