Cracking start to Series 9.

It's so hard to believe that Vera is now in its ninth series, time flies. If I'm honest I wasn't overly impressed with Series 8, I thought some of the writing had let it down, fortunately with Blind Spot, the show was definitely back on track. The change in personnel gave it a nice fresh feel, bring in Paul Kaye as the new mortician was a terrific move, an awesome actor, he and Blethyn shared some excellent scenes.

The mystery was excellent, very engaging, cleverly crafted, it really did feel like a whodunit. Some fine performances too, Adrian Lukis and Peter Davison in particular were excellent, appearing together again since Too good to be true, another ITV drama from a few years ago. You really were kept guessing until the very end.

Blethyn and Doughty were terrific once again, hoping the remainder of the series will be of this quality.

9/10, an excellent start.

Still a thrill

Vera is back for its ninth series. Wow! I am one who have been waiting patiently. And I am glad to report that the quality of this first one episode in the new serie, are very good. Intense, a good plot, thrilling, and Brenda delivers once again at he hardworking Vera, who gets all the pieces togheter, once again. As the previous seasons, this episode is all about the crime, nothing about Vera, and her private life (as the earlier seasons), but that is ok, it works anyhow. I also enjoy the rest of the cast, the belong together now. As a team they are strong, and as a viewer we enjoy how everybody has a place in Veras world. I just hope they keep on the good work, for many years to come.

It isn't the first time.

Love Vera and the whole plot, narrative etc . I've one gripe, not just Vera. Broadchurch, Silent Witness.. it's the extras, the non speaking players who look on gormlessly without a thing to say. So unrealistic. The worst is the "solicitor/lawyer" who sits mute, taking notes or looking a bit angry but says nothing at all. Vera's producers are one of the biggest employers for these type of extras and whilst it's great they are employing people at a few quid a day ( and I understand if they get a line they get more money) . It just irritates, whilst not necessarily integral to the plot, sometimes an odd "my client does not need to answer that" would be welcomed. Other than that, faultless drama!

Vera investigates child abuse
safenoe3 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has numerous twists and turns, with it culminating in the investigation of a football (soccer in the USA) coach's (a male) abuse of an underage boy in his team several years ago. Watching this, you almost thought the writers would venture into LGBTI territory in Northumbria but you could sense it really they wanted to go there.

Blind Spot

Vera returns for another series and I keep on thinking how has she managed to avoid retirement?

In Blind Spot the body of a young trainee forensic psychologist. Joanne Caswell working for the prison service is found in a landfill site. She was stabbed several times and it seems her body was dumped there but she was killed elsewhere.

Vera's investigations discovered that Joanne had been looking at a possible miscarriage of justice of a football coach who confessed to the murder of a teenager.

However the way the episode was structured, every guest star was a suspect. There was a moment for everybody in the shifty spotlight be it her parents, boss, girlfriend or anyone else Joanne came into contact with.

I did reckon there would be several twists involved in this story.

Paul Kaye added a bit of spikiness as the new pathologist.

Negative portrayals of gays and lesbians

Warning: Spoilers
While I'm glad the series is back for a ninth season, due to Brenda Blethyn's excellent lead performance, I feel this episode was not as great as it could have been.

First, it's way too convenient that a woman gets out of a car, soon gets murdered, and on the way to her death any number of people could have done it. Also we weren't told how far the car was from the wooded area where she was killed; and it seems implausible that she goes from a busy city intersection to a wooded area so quickly to meet her demise.

The other thing that annoyed me about this episode was all the people Vera interviewed were covering up something and lying to her. You mean to tell me not one person in this investigation would be honest? The lesbian artist lied twice (first about when she returned to her apartment, then later about not leaving the art studio). The soccer coach lied about his whereabouts. His wife also lied about her whereabouts. The father of the kid who was killed years ago was not totally forthcoming with Vera either.

Then we had a retired detective Vera visited twice, and he was covering things up about the original investigation. Not to mention coworkers of the recent victim who were giving Vera the runaround. The individual who came closest to being honest was the sister of the prisoner who had committed suicide, but even her point of view had been clouded by her unwillingness to acknowledge her brother was gay and had sexually abused a 15 year old.

At one point Vera and DS Healy realize the recent murder victim was having an affair with the artist. Then they think she must've been having an affair with the dead prisoner's sister. Why? Just because she had texted the woman a few times? That would automatically mean they'd been sexually involved? All this was before the big reveal that the soccer coach had been sexually abused by the prisoner years ago and that a homosexual cover-up and blackmail was at the root of the first murder.

We even had a stereotypical scene where the artist was afraid her parents would cut her off financially if they found out she was a lesbian. And on top of that, we learned she had once stalked another woman, when she was in college. Not one gay or lesbian person was presented in this episode as self-confident or well-adjusted.

One thing I did like about this episode was how the newer murder connected to the older murder. So actually Vera ended up investigating two murders. The death of the woman at the beginning was in the same place as the death of the person who had died years ago.

I also liked the way this particular story required Vera to look at how things get muddled within the justice system. So in a way she was questioning how the original confession was obtained, how the jury had reached a verdict, and how the recent victim had been trying to reopen the old case.

Ok

I see that most of the reviews here were written around the time of the initial screening so many fans were keen to see the return of the show after 12 months giving it a positive response while negative ratings seemed to come from those looking at it from PC-perspective. Personally, I am now 82.5% of the way through binge-watching the 40 shows screened to date over a 10 day period. The show had dipped in seasons 6 and 7 but had improved in season 8 so I was disappointed with episode, particularly as a season opener. There seemed to be too many characters for my liking, it was very wordy and the best episodes tend to be the ones with little known actors in them so seeing the lead character The Last Detective (such a shame it didn't last too long) and a former Doctor Who was a bit off-putting. I know I have seen this episode before but, like my previous viewing of it, it proved instantly forgettable. Not a classic.
