Mikael's big brother Torbjörn turns out to have been wagging from school for two weeks. In panic, their mother gives Anita out to look for him. In the present day, adult Benny has begun the staging of his new play. Now the scene of his family's breakdown will be repeated. Erik researches his Jewish background after some surviving relative, which leads him to Estonia, which has just become independent. Friends Erik, Mikael and Benny grow up in a chain house area in the late 1970s. Their families hang out, but behind the facades hide pain, grief and shame.
