Season is looking good so far!
statingfacts23 April 2018
I enjoyed this episode it reminded me of what The Walking Dead used to be. I saw some people saying they're tired of the people vs people concept and I agree but the vultures do seem interesting, and they don't seem as corny and laughable as the saviors. Overall Fear The Walking Dead is superior to TWD as of now.

Pretty good introduction to the season
callcooldude23 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode felt more like the season premiere to me as we focus heavily on the Clarks, with the new characters only making an appearance at the end of the episode.

Ok, let's start with the 'bad' things about the episode. I don't like how they've done a time jump like this without answering important questions. How/where did Madison find her kids and Strand? How did Nick find Luciana? What was Luciana up to all this time? How did they get to Texas? Is Daniel alive or dead? There are SO MANY questions that need answering and I worry that we're not going to get them.

Despite saying that, I liked the development in Nick's character and how the end of season 3 has affected him so much. He's now basically the opposite of a risk taker like he was in the first three seasons. So at least there we got a bit of continuity from the third season. I also like how the whole group is together and not separated, so they're all taking on the new villain as a group. Madison was a badass in this episode. I know a lot of people don't like her character but I think she's awesome. I missed hearing Strand's voice haha.

Now, let's talk about the new characters. Naomi seems decent so far but didn't leave much of an impression. I'm sure we'll see more of her in the future though so can't say too much about her just yet. The twist regarding the kid was nice and unexpected. Apparently, some people thought it was obvious that she was a spy but I had no idea. The new villains, the Vultures, seem interesting so far. A few people are saying they're similar the Saviours and I do agree to an extent. But the Saviours were active villains while these guys seem a lot more passive, which is a refreshing change. They don't kill you, they just wait for you to die. I feel like the leader, Mel, came across as more realistic than Negan was, which I find is usually the case in Fear TWD. He also seems pretty confident which makes him even more intimidating.

I do wonder where Madison is though in the present. Is she dead? Has she been kidnapped by the Vultures? I'm quite interested to find out where she is. But I feel like something has definitely happened to her. Overall, the episode did what it was supposed to - introduce new characters/threats and catch up with the original cast. I don't think it was as good as last week's episode but the episode definitely left me feeling excited for the rest of the season.

And the people who are saying they are tired of seeing villains on both shows clearly haven't thought about this properly. Without the villains, there would be nothing interesting to show. Unless you want 16 episodes of peace?

I actually enjoyed this episode. The new villain, very interesting. Seems like a calculated one, not to be easily knocked off. I really want to see where this take us in the mid season.

Good as the first episode.
monraelised23 April 2018
It's so hard not to spoil anything but well I'm not going to do that. The second episode was great at least for me. I expected it to be less interesting than the first episode but It wasn't. I love how it's different from the original TWD, there is that feeling that I adore when you don't know or expect of what is going to happen, which direction it will go. It can be slow sometimes, of course they are not going to put a lot of action in the first few episodes but I still like how it's produced, that doesn't affect me as long as it's developed good. What can say, I can't wait for more! :D

Fear the Walking Dead - Another Day in the Diamond
Scarecrow-8814 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The outrage by "Fear the..." fans regarding the 4th season mid-finale regarding Madison's fate is all the more understandable when you watch the second episode, considering her humanity and desire to offer kindness, family, and a home to derelicts seemingly abandoned by the horrors of the apocalypse in Texas. The caliber of talent involved in this season is rather impressive. Jenna Elfman, as Naomi, for instance is proof-positive that the zombie genre has definitely developed a prestige that was once not the case. Whether or not that the creative side of either "Walking Dead" show really has the sustainability to do the talents that get involved in them justice is another case entirely. I often shake my head and react with puzzlement at certain creative decisions both shows commit to-like Madison's departure later in the season or the original show's killing off Karl-but "Another Day in the Diamond" gives us Madison committing to finding any family that might be available in the surrounding area of the baseball stadium community they currently inhabit, locating a town just outside their "safe zone". The little girl, Charlie, later determined to be a "plant" or "spy", unbeknownst to Madison for Mel and his van convoy of "Vultures" who "pick clean" target locations of their supplies and survival items, just points forward when asked where her family is. Madison, Alicia, and Victor leave the Diamond to search for Charlie's family, locating in Naomi, encountering zombies in a giant oil drum, noticing that the Texas town they investigate has been, for the most part, raided and cleaned out of not only the goods so many of these abandoned locations often offer but startlingly the walkers (well until they are found left in an oil drum Naomi staggered into through a hole on the roof). Naomi pulls a gun on Madison, clearly holding onto whatever little bit of sanity and resolve that remains, hysterics on the verge and ready to surface.

The oil drum sequence where Madison dives into the black to help rescue Naomi, quite adept at defending herself with just a knife, and the Western motif quite distinctive at the beginning of the episode, with how the dusty backdrop of the scattered walkers baking under the hot Texas sun, are nicely stylistic and leave an impression. Nick's request to be let out by Charlie, nearly overrun by zombies when he gets into a car that barely makes it that far from the gate, is perhaps the most bone-headed moment in the episode, questioning his common sense, particularly since he does so at night...he's presented as restless, after some of the crops yield prove worthless, to be burned. The Diamond reminds me too much of the prison from "The Walking Dead" and this ring of familiarity sounds quite loudly. Mel presented as yet another sociopathic leader of a group traveling from one place to another to interrupt and devastate the series' heroes' supposed idyll admittedly leaves me rather disillusioned...perhaps once again going to this particular development serves to remind us that it seems to be too easy an option. When the regulars begin to build a community in order to bring stability and domesticity to a group of people looking to climb out of the doldrums for something remotely normal and less hostile, there is always some introduced heavy and his cohorts to ruin any sense of prolonged relief. When it isn't a group of hostiles, it is famine, or disease, or the go-to standby of the undead when needed to overrun and devour when need-be.

Mel has a seat and confidently informs Madison that either they can give over what they have to his company or they will wait for her community to perish and eventually take it all. Madison's face says it all when Charlie is revealed to be a spy. That betrayal and Mel's rubbing it in her face, as she tells him that doing the sojourn lifestyle is in their past while he encourages her to just not fight the inevitable. The Diamond story is set in the past according to the episode while Morgan, Althea, and John Dorie remain tied up while Nick, Alicia, Victor, and Luciana hold guns on them, wondering why they have the Vultures' "flag" (a marker that defines their presence from place to place, with a number on it). With the crops dying (of course) and the Vultures camped outside the Diamond during the "flashback", what happened the led to several of Madison's people showing up at Althea's SWAT SUV will obviously soon be made know to us.

Storyline: In the past, Alicia, Strand, Nick and Luciana wake up at their new home in a baseball stadium. They begin their daily routine and then start working on projects around the stadium.

Madison asks a young newcomer, Charlie, where she lived before finding their settlement. Charlie points in a direction outside the stadium.

From a PA, a man commemorates one year of living at "The Diamond".

Strand joins Nick and Alicia for breakfast, talking about celebrating the day. Cole, a resident at the stadium, sits with them.

Alicia checks on Madison, who is converting the dugout into a room for Charlie. Alicia asks her why she wasn't at lunch and if she has slept, but her mom tells her that she needs to build and that when she lived outside she didn't sleep so it doesn't matter.

Nick works in the vegetable garden and chats with Charlie, who asks how much food they have in the pantries. Nick explains that they've almost grown enough food to eliminate the need for scavenging and that she doesn't need to worry about life outside because they are safe now.

Madison speaks to a couple, Douglas and Viv, about venturing out to find Charlie's family. Douglas worries about traveling outside the walkie range, but eventually gives Madison the keys to a car.

Cole tries to join the search mission, but Strand tells him to stay behind for watch duty. Nick asks Luciana to bring back a new book for Charlie. Madison, Alicia, Strand and Luciana leave without Nick.

In the car, Luciana remarks that Nick should leave the stadium at some point. Madison notes that Luciana wasn't there when she found Nick and says that Nick just needs to feel safe.

On the road, Madison jokes with Strand about Cole's crush on him. Nick contacts them via walkie and informs them that weevils are destroying the turnips, just before losing connection.

Madison's crew arrives in a deserted town. They split up to find Charlie's family.

Strand and Luciana enter a store that has been picked clean.

Madison and Alicia find a camp that's been burned down near giant industrial oil tanks. They see a giant white flag with the number "457". Madison finds a newly opened can of food and warns Strand that someone might be nearby.

Luciana predicts that Madison won't go back until she has performed a thorough search. Strand points out that he would not be alive if it weren't for Madison's determination. To this day, he's not sure why she saved him after he betrayed her at the dam.

Back at the stadium, Nick finds Charlie fiddling with a walkie and explains that Madison went to look for her family and that she will find them.

Madison continues searching the camp, when suddenly, a woman, Naomi, puts a gun to Madison's head and demands her keys. Madison quietly clicks her walkie button three times.

Strand and Luciana receive three static bursts and realize that Madison is in trouble.

Madison, still at gunpoint, invites Naomi to join her community. Naomi instead snatches Madison's keys and starts to leave, before Alicia, Strand and Luciana cut her off. She runs to the top of an oil tank and falls through the roof. Madison jumps in after her and helps Naomi fight infected in a pool of oil.

Alicia and Strand pry open the hatch to the tank and kill the remaining infected. Alicia rescues Madison from an infected.

Later, at night, Luciana finds a copy of "The Little Prince" in the camp. Naomi insists that she's not from the area and doesn't know who led the infected into the tank. After hearing more infected snarling, they decide to leave.

In the stadium, Nick burns the infested turnips and hears music in the distance. He tells Douglas and Viv that they should investigate the source of the music. Douglas insists they stay put, but Nick asks Charlie to open the gate.

Nick slowly drives out the gate and flashes back to the dam explosion. He presses the accelerator and runs into a pole. Infected block his door. Cole shoots the infected from the lookout. Nick heads back toward the stadium with an infected on his heels. Madison's crew rams into the infected with their truck, saving Nick in time.

Inside, Madison informs Charlie that she didn't find her family. She asks if Charlie knows who destroyed her camp. Charlie remains silent.

Naomi cleans up a cut on Nick's head and explains that she's a nurse. Madison shocks Naomi by suggesting she take a hot shower while deciding if she will stay with their community.

Strand, Douglas and Cole push Nick's truck back toward the stadium. Luciana sees something in the distance and yells at them to ditch the car and get back inside. A convoy of trucks pulls up behind them.

Inside the stadium, Alicia tells everyone to arm themselves. Meanwhile, an army of trucks and campers parks in the lot.

A man, Ennis, gets out of his truck, turns on a cassette player and rides a bicycle around the lot. He rounds up the infected and leads them into another truck, where another man closes the truck door. Then, from another truck, the leader, Mel, gets off and sets a lawn chair, while Ennis spray-paints the number "12" on the back of the vehicle.

Madison walks up to Mel and asks what he did to the camp by the oil tanks. Mel explains that the oil tanks blew up on their own, then reveals that he knows about their weevil problem, to Madison's confusion. He summons Charlie and commends her for finding the stadium. Mel orders Madison to give him all of their supplies or else die while trying to survive the weevil infestation. Madison refuses to provide him with anything.

The next day, Strand, Alicia and Cole stare at the newcomers outside. They hear Madison hammering in the dugout and decide to join her. Nick finds signs that the weevil infestation has indeed spread beyond the turnips as Mel warned.

Luciana walks outside and lays: "The Little Prince" by Charlie's RV. Charlie watches from a window with sadness.

NOW

On the road, Nick, Alicia, Strand and Luciana hold Morgan, John Dorie and Althea at gunpoint. Luciana finds a white "51" flag in the SWAT vehicle and accuses them of belonging to Mel's group. Al insists she doesn't know the significance of the flag, but Alicia orders them to show them where they found the flag. They get on the SWAT truck and drive.

"Another Day in the Diamond" adeptly sets up the stakes for the season by juxtaposing the relative peace of the stadium life against the external existential threats
fernandoschiavi18 April 2024
In the past, Madison's group live in a baseball stadium with a larger group and it thrives until their crops are overrun with weevils. Madison and Alicia meet Naomi on a run who tries to steal their car only to fall through the roof of an oil tower. Madison rescues her despite the previous threat and offers her a place at the stadium. Naomi agrees. Later that night, a group of raiders in caravans show up and give them an ultimatum, leave or they will wait for them to die off. They know about the weevils thanks to Charlie; a little girl Madison took in who secretly spied on them. Madison refuses the offer and leaves the group outside.

In present, Alicia's group tells Morgan's group about the Vultures after they find one of their flags in the truck. They demand to know where Al found it.

Season 4, Episode 2 of "Fear the Walking Dead," titled "Another Day in the Diamond," provides a stark contrast to the season opener by focusing back on the original characters and their new community. This episode serves as a crucial juncture, detailing the lives of Madison Clark and her group who have established a semblance of civilization within a baseball stadium. This setting symbolizes a fragile oasis of normalcy and routine amidst the chaos, a recurring theme that explores the continuous struggle for a sustainable life in the apocalypse.

The episode opens with a serene yet eerily calm daily life scene at the stadium. Madison, Alicia, Nick, and Luciana appear to have found a rhythm and purpose, as they engage in farming, education, and community building. However, the peace is deceptive, as the narrative slowly unveils the looming threats outside their walls. The introduction of the Vultures, a new antagonist group, marks a significant turning point. Led by Mel, this group besieges communities, waiting patiently as their victims succumb to desperation and collapse from within, a tactic that is both psychological and chilling.

One of the episode's most striking scenes involves a flashback that reveals the initial encounter between Madison's group and the Vultures. These moments are fraught with tension, as Madison's unwavering resolve to protect her community contrasts sharply with Mel's calm and calculated demeanor. This encounter sets up a dynamic that questions the viability of any sanctuary in a world where human threats rival those of the walkers.

The episode excels in its depiction of the characters' internal conflicts and the external pressures they face. For instance, Nick's palpable anxiety about venturing beyond the stadium walls underscores his traumatic past experiences, highlighting the psychological scars that all survivors carry with them. Moreover, the subplot involving a young girl named Charlie, who is revealed to be a spy for the Vultures, adds a layer of betrayal and complexity to the storyline, challenging the characters' notions of trust and morality.

"Another Day in the Diamond" adeptly sets up the stakes for the season by juxtaposing the relative peace of the stadium life against the external existential threats. The episode's effective use of suspense and character development enriches the narrative, making it a compelling watch. The introduction of the Vultures as a formidable and strategic foe adds a new layer of intrigue, pushing the protagonists to reconsider their strategies and moral choices in maintaining their haven. This episode not only advances the plot but also deepens our understanding of the characters' resilience and vulnerabilities in the face of unending challenges.

Lifeless episode. Doesn't feel like FTWD
AlejoMarcelo4 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The worst episode of the show so far. It's look like the show is about to die, Just stop introducing boring new characters and tell me how the hell the main cast found each other after season 3 ended.. I was really enjoying this show but they are trying to be like The Walking Dead and they do it terrible. Also, ¿Why the hell Madison jumped to save that random woman who robbed her 30 seconds ago? I mean, That was almost a suicide, There were like 15 zombies in there, No sense. I really hope that they bring back the essence of FTWD at some point because this is so boring and depressive, And a lot of people like me watched Fear because it was something different to the original show. This episode was the first time that i got bored on this show.

An Ok Episode...
panagiotis199329 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts with a ''Before'' and im like ''Before what?''. Living in a stadium is actually a great idea to have protection against the zombies. Nick says to the little girl that they are growing enough (vegetables etc) that soon they won't even need to go out to find food. That's hard to believe. I see many new characters, don't know how to feel about it yet. Having the kid in the group can change everything. 47 people live in the stadium? Come on... that's so hard to believe. So they have clean water and food for 47 people to eat everyday? No way. Calling zombies ''the fallen'' is a new one. Nick seems to take his farming seriously. This new group of villains is not very impressive. The little girl working for the enemy was a nice twist. Ok.. so I guess the ''before'' meant before meeting Morgan. Ok so it seems like all the new characters we see in this episode won't be in future episodes. That's good. This episode was ok but nothing great. My rating is 7/10.

The Groundhog Day of tv shows...
moribund-382-8729469 December 2018
The Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead, the Groundhog Day of tv shows. Our nice group of survivors tries to build a new life somewhere - a well organized evil group comes in - they fight - our group wins and loses a few characters along the way to make space for new characters... rinse & repeat.

Oh, and some zombies are there too, but they're just decoration.

Another group of bad people.
kyalemwendwa23 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was a fan of both TWD and FTWD, but how many times are we going to keep running into bad guys, fight them, win, lose a home then find another.

Repeat!

They need a new story arch one about finding a cure or building a future this is tedious.

Tired writing
jjawilliams16 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just so tired of these shows that have the bad people roll up on the good ones in a fortified place and pitch a chair or just stand out in the open and threaten the people inside the walls. Have 4 of the people with rifles shoot the leader then about 5 others that are just hanging out in the area and I bet they'd leave!!! Seriously ridiculous when they write crap like this. The head guy even rattled off their arms from inside and it's more than enough to give those idiots pause. I CAN'T, I just can't. Oh Lord please have a decent apocalyptic show that has some sense of reason Jesus! People that rated this episode so high are deluded.
