Hln is settling back into a life of crime.
The cable network, operated by CNN, has been increasing its production of original series that explore mystery and crime, a move that hearkens to a previous era when the outlet was best known for its coverage of prominent court cases and exploring their ramifications with colorful primetime shows.
“We have doubled down on our strategy of emphasizing long-form programming focused on mystery, crime and investigation,” says Ken Jautz, executive vice president of CNN U.S., who oversees the cable network known in a previous era as CNN Headline News. “This is what has been resonating with our audience.” In an interview, Jautz said the network has expanded the number of long-form series on its schedule to 12 in 2019, compared with just two in the first half of 2017.
Hln recently launched “Very Scary People,” a docu-series hosted by actor Donnie Wahlberg that examines the lives of infamous murderers.

Sunny Hostin hopes to bring a new view to a tried-and-true format.
True-crime documentaries have fueled the fortunes of TV institutions ranging from “48 Hours” and “Dateline” to Discovery’s Investigation Discovery cable network. Now Hostin, a co-host of ABC’s “The View” and a senior legal correspondent for ABC News, wants to add a different element to the mix: the viewpoint of the victims of a crime.
Investigation Discovery has greenlit “The Whole Truth With Sunny Hostin,” a six-episode documentary series that will show Hostin traveling to various parts of the United States to explore the stories behind some of the nation’s most notorious homicides. She says she is eager to include the perspective of people who have been affected by the crimes, not just the criminals and the legal system around them. Hostin will also serve as an executive producer on the series, which is scheduled to debut...

Crime television is all around us. Almost every network dives into the flavor of the week in an attempt to capitalize on crimes past and present and draw in viewers with their offerings.
In Defense Of is doing something different.
Where most shows focus solely on the criminals, the cases, the law enforcement, or the prosecution of the case, In Defense Of is bringing to light what it takes to ensure all of those protected by the U.S. Constitution receive what they are due: the right to counsel as guaranteed in the Sixth Amendment.
The attorneys who defend what can often be the ugliest and most evil of us don't always find themselves hailed by the media, but In Defense Of is a limited series on Oxygen showcasing their success with particular cases, their challenges with the same, and much more.
I had the opportunity to sit with some of the participants,...
